Chapter 45 Courting Death
He thought, 'Victor Veil's Tomb, treasure chest, key, Artwork of Moonlit, Black Rose?'
Larry looked at the Black Rose in front of him, who was dressed in black leather armor with a graceful figure, and fell into deep thought.
He thought, 'Is this a coincidence, or is someone behind it?'
"Larry, please protect me," Black Rose spoke again, a hint of pleading on her beautiful face.
Larry glanced at her. "You said someone killed all your companions, yet instead of running for your life, you came to Sunset City seeking my protection. That doesn't make sense."
Black Rose explained, "The killer wasn't the mastermind. He wanted to keep the treasure chest for themselves and didn't hand it over to the employer. They brought the chest to Sunset City, so I followed. I have the key. If the employer finds out I have the key, I'm done for."
"Who's the employer?"
Black Rose shook her head. "I don't know. Our leader was the one in contact with them, and now the leader is dead."
"Who is the killer?"
"I don't know. It was chaotic and pitch black in the tomb. I was severely injured and only focused on escaping, so I didn't see clearly."
Larry extended his hand. "Where is the key?"
Black Rose reached behind her, took a key from a pouch in her leather pants, and handed it over.
Larry took it and examined it.
The key was small and plain, with nothing special about it.
He asked, "Is this it?"
"Yes, this is the key to the treasure chest. The chest is extremely special. No one can open it without this key, not even with today's high-tech methods."
Larry put away the key and said calmly, "Go to Mortal Clinic and find Frank. Stay with Frank, but he's in Southwild right now, so wait a few days before going."
Leaving those words, Larry turned and walked away.
He didn't want to get involved in these matters. But this involved his family's Artwork of Moonlit, so he had to care.
The Artwork of Moonlit was a family heirloom.
Larry didn't know its origin.
He only knew that it had been passed down for many years and was currently the most valuable painting in the antique world.
There were many fake Artworks of Moonlit on the market, but no one had seen the real one.
After Larry left the underground parking lot, Black Rose quickly left as well.
After Larry walked out, he took out his phone and saw missed calls and messages from Chloe.
He didn't return the call and instead went back to the job market, riding his electric bike home.
At the Ella Group.
This was an international conglomerate, well-known globally.
Sunset City was also a metropolis, and the Ella Group had a branch there.
Human Resources Department, Manager's Office.
Chloe sat on the sofa, her legs together, holding a glass of water poured by John. She looked at John, who was staring at her, feeling a bit at a loss. "John."
"Chloe, it's so hot. Have a sip of water first, and then we can talk."
John stared at her. He was standing, and from this angle, he could see down her collar, catching glimpses of her hidden beauty.
He was excited and couldn't help but feel aroused.
He had put something special in the water.
As long as Chloe drank it, she would have no resistance.
"Chloe, drink up." John was a bit impatient, already fantasizing about what would happen next.
Seeing her beautiful figure made him particularly excited.
Chloe took a small sip.
Seeing her drink, John sighed in relief and sat down on the sofa opposite her, starting to chat. He was now just waiting for the drug to take effect.
He said, "Chloe, you're the most beautiful and elegant woman I've ever met."
"Thank you for the compliment."
"By the way, Chloe, I heard your husband was personally found by Victor. He's an orphan, a retired soldier. You shouldn't be with a poor retired soldier. With your qualities, you could find someone much better, someone successful and wealthy."
As he spoke, John sat up straight and said, "I know someone who's already a manager at a big company at a young age, earning ten thousand dollars a month, with a house and a car. If you divorce that loser Larry, I believe my friend wouldn't mind being with you."
The friend he mentioned was actually himself. But he was smart and didn't make it too obvious.
He was testing Chloe.
Chloe felt a bit hot and gently pulled her clothes, fanning herself.
Noticing John's lecherous gaze, she blushed and lowered her head, whispering, "John, excuse me, it's a bit hot."
"It's not hot. I turned on the air conditioning."
John took the opportunity to get up, walked over, and sat next to Chloe, reaching out to touch her smooth forehead. "Are you running a fever?"
Chloe quickly dodged and moved away. "John, about the job application..."
"No rush..."
At this moment, Chloe felt a bit dizzy.
And her body was getting hotter.
She thought, 'Could it be the water?'
She realized something was wrong and stood up. "John, I need to use the restroom."
"I have one in my office." John pointed to a door in the office.
Chloe didn't care anymore and quickly stood up.
As soon as she stood, she felt dizzy and almost fell onto the sofa.
John quickly supported her, pretending to be concerned. "Chloe, are you okay?"
"I... I don't know, feeling a bit dizzy. I need to go to the restroom."
She shook her head slightly, then stood up, forcing herself to endure the dizziness, and walked to the restroom. Once inside, she locked the door and quickly took out her phone to call Larry.
Larry was on his way home when he received Chloe's call.
"Larry, I... I think I've been drugged. I'm in the manager's office of the Human Resources Department at the Ella Group. Please come quickly. I feel so hot..." she was calling from John's restroom.
After the call, she felt the world spinning and her eyelids getting heavy, wanting to sleep.
She turned on the faucet, continuously splashing water on her face, which helped her stay somewhat awake.
After receiving Chloe's call, Larry felt a surge of anger.
He thought, 'Daring to drug my wife? They must be looking for death!'
He threw his electric bike onto the road, rushed to the middle of the street, and stopped a passing car.
The driver slammed on the brakes, the tires screeching against the pavement, producing black smoke. The driver looked at Larry in front of the car, rolled down the window, and cursed, "Are you looking to die?"
Larry walked over, forcibly opened the car door, dragged the driver out, and threw him to the ground. Then he got in the car, floored the gas pedal, and sped towards the Ella Group.
However, Larry was so worried about Chloe that he didn't notice a woman sitting in the back seat.
The woman in the back seat was too scared to say a word.
Because Larry's aura was terrifying, so terrifying that she broke out in a cold sweat.
At the Ella Group, Human Resources Department Manager's Office.
John had taken off his shirt, revealing his white muscles. He looked at the restroom door, licked his dry lips, and had a sinister smile of success on his face. "The most beautiful woman in Sunset City, today I must experience what it's like to sleep with the most beautiful woman in Sunset City."
As for the consequences?
He had thought about it.
But in his view, Chloe had already been expelled from the Lewis family and had nothing to do with them anymore. Otherwise, she wouldn't be out looking for a job.
And her husband Larry, who borrowed a car to show off, would be completely ruined once that big shot returned.
John had no worries, and with a phone recording in front of her, Chloe wouldn't dare to speak out.
He said, "Chloe, here I come."
