Chapter 268 Becoming a Laughingstock
Chloe was taking a stroll down Medical Street. The big clinics were swamped, with lines snaking out the doors, especially at places like Pillar Pharmacy, Everlife Group, and Legion Lord. The whole area was buzzing with activity.
"Chloe, you always need someone else to get votes for you."
"Seriously, can you be any more gross? Your appointment numbers are almost beating Lucy from Pillar Pharmacy."
"Even top docs like Zander, Octavius, and Keith are behind you."
As Chloe walked, people were pointing and whispering about her.
Some even straight-up cursed at her.
She was totally confused.
She pulled out her phone and opened the medical app, and was floored by what she saw.
Her appointment numbers had hit 200,000, and she'd treated over 30,000 patients, putting her at the top in patient votes.
Her eyes went wide.
Who did this?
Was it Larry?
Now she got why Larry was so cocky.
In less than half a day, she'd treated more people than all the doctors at Pillar Pharmacy combined. It was so obvious, like they wanted everyone to know she was cheating.
She quickly ducked her head and walked away.
She soon got back to the Global Nexus Group clinic.
Larry was sitting on the doorstep, looking like a wooden statue, not moving or showing any emotion.
Chloe walked over, gritting her teeth.
"Larry, look at what you've done. Could you make it any more obvious? Do you want everyone to know I'm cheating?"
"What are you talking about? I don't get it." Larry's mouth moved like a robot, spitting out each word.
Chloe was fuming.
"How much money did you blow on this cheating?"
The Lewis family was broke, barely scraping by, and Larry was still spending money on this nonsense.
"Even if we make it into the top 100 and qualify for the next round, what's the point? I don't know any medical skills. If I compete, I'll get kicked out right away and become a joke."
Chloe kept ranting, furious.
Just then, Oscar and the others showed up.
They'd seen Chloe's high ranking and rushed over.
They all knew Chloe had paid to cheat.
Julia looked at Chloe and laughed mockingly. "Chloe, you're hilarious. You made my day."
Stella was bent over, laughing. "You kill me, spending money to cheat. Even if you get into the top 100, so what? Competing in the medical skills contest will just make you a joke."
They were all laughing at Chloe, enjoying her embarrassment.
Chloe felt mortified.
Larry had caused so much trouble, making her the laughingstock of Sunset City.
At that moment, a bunch of reporters came running over.
Cameras and camcorders were pointed at Chloe, snapping away.
"Chloe, how much did you spend to get on the list?"
"Global Nexus Group clinic is so empty, but your appointment numbers are over 200,000, and you've treated more than 30,000 people in less than half a day. That's incredible."
Some reporters started asking questions.
Chloe felt utterly humiliated.
She didn't say a word, kept her head down, and walked away.
Larry gave a mechanical smile, stood up like a wooden statue, and walked out step by step, leaving the Global Nexus Group clinic.
Larry had spent money to make Chloe the top, turning her into the laughingstock of Sunset City and this medical conference.
Larry didn't give a damn.
He left Medical Street, glanced around to make sure no one was tailing him, and grabbed a cab to Mortal Clinic.
Valerian was already there, chatting with Lyra.
Larry walked in.
They both stood up and said in unison, "Larry."
Larry waved them off, sat down, and asked, "Valerian, did you figure out who those guys were that tried to off me this morning?"
Valerian nodded. "Yeah, we got it."
He continued, "This crew rolled into Sunset City eight days ago. They're mercenaries from the Southwild Border, part of the Dark Guardians."
"Dark Guardians?" Larry squinted.
He'd spent ten years fighting in Southwild and knew the Dark Guardians well.
The Dark Guardians were a top-tier mercenary group from the Southwild Border, super powerful. But he had no clue who their leader was.
"Did you find out who leads the Dark Guardians?"
Valerian shook his head. "Not yet, but we did find out they've been in touch with Cormac."
"Just as I thought." Larry's face darkened.
Cormac, also known as Nikolai, was a top-notch doctor and the president of the National Medical Association of Country G.
Now Larry was almost sure this Cormac was the Nikolai Leif had mentioned, the mastermind behind the Cedar Grove battle.
But who was pulling Nikolai's strings?
Larry still didn't know.
Valerian went on, "For this medical conference, Cormac is at Silvermoon Apothecary."
Larry asked, "Did you dig up anything on Silvermoon Apothecary?"
"Yeah." Valerian nodded. "The guy who registered Silvermoon Apothecary is named Lachlan Everest. This dude is super mysterious and got famous for his medical skills fifty years ago. He's really good."
"Lachlan?" Larry frowned.
Who the heck was Lachlan?
Valerian continued, "We haven't found much on Lachlan yet. But intel shows that Alistair had secret meetings with Lachlan after getting to Sunset City."
Larry took a deep breath.
Since Alistair was meeting with Lachlan, it looked like Alistair was tied to the Cedar Grove battle.
Valerian asked, "What do we do now? Should we take out all the Dark Guardians?"
Larry waved him off. "Don't rush it. I want to see what these guys are planning at the medical conference."
"Got it." Valerian nodded.
Larry thought for a moment and then said, "Keep a close eye on Lachlan, Cormac, and Alistair, and all the big shots from Aurora Citadel. Track everything they do."
"Understood."
Larry waved his hand. "Alright, that's it. You can go now."
Valerian turned and left.
After he was gone, Lyra asked, "Larry, is something big about to go down?"
Larry stroked his chin. "I don't know what these guys are up to. This morning, they had the chance to kill me, but they didn't. They just threatened me with Chloe. Looks like they just don't want me at the medical conference."
Larry had been mulling over what happened all day.
He was trying to figure out what the mastermind was planning.
After learning that Cormac was likely the mastermind and that Alistair might be behind him, Larry was even more puzzled.
