Chapter 264 Forced to Drink Poison

Larry didn't see this coming. This wasn't some war zone; it was a busy, peaceful city.

In the rearview mirror, he spotted a rocket launcher aimed right at his car. Panic set in. If they fired, innocent people would get hurt. But they didn't pull the trigger.

"What the hell?" he muttered, confused.

He kept weaving through traffic, heading for the highway. Once he hit the open road, he gunned it towards the suburbs.

His car, worth a cool two hundred grand, was now pushing 200 mph, the engine screaming at 7000 RPM.

"Larry, what are you doing? Slow down!" Chloe's face was pale, and she looked like she was about to pass out or puke.

Larry noticed the car behind them, still on their tail. They had the chance to blow him up, so why hadn't they?

He finally pulled off into a deserted area in the suburbs.

Chloe stumbled out and threw up by the roadside. The cars behind them stopped too.

Larry got out and saw people getting out of the other cars. It hit him—they'd been herding him here on purpose.

"Larry." A man approached.

He looked about fifty, wearing a black jacket, with dark skin and sunglasses.

Larry stared him down. "Who are you?"

The guy tossed a small bottle to Larry.

Larry caught it and examined it.

It was a crystal bottle with some blue liquid inside. He frowned.

The man smirked. "Drink it."

Larry was on high alert, ready to fight.

The man seemed to read his mind. "You could take us all out, but Chloe won't make it out alive."

Larry shrugged, eyeing the blue liquid. "What's this stuff?"

The guy replied, "Relax. It won't kill you. You'll just lose your sense of taste, your limbs will stiffen, and you'll have trouble moving. It'll wear off in a week, just in time for the medical conference to end."

Larry got it now.

Someone wanted to keep him from the medical conference but didn't want him dead. So, they planned to mess with his senses and mobility, making it impossible for him to use acupuncture needles.

"Drink it, and we'll leave you and Chloe alone. Or, you can fight us and see what happens."

Larry unscrewed the cap, downed the liquid, tossed the bottle aside, and asked, "Is that good enough?"

The group turned to leave.

"Wait," Larry called out.

They stopped.

Larry's face was serious. "Who sent you? Who doesn't want me at the medical conference? Is there something shady going on?"

Chloe was still by the roadside, trying to recover from the wild ride. She knew they were being followed but felt too sick to ask questions.

Larry watched the cars drive off, then spat out most of the blue liquid. Some had already hit his bloodstream, so he used acupuncture needles to flush it out.

Feeling a bit better after puking, Chloe wiped her mouth and walked over to Larry. She saw him shirtless, covered in acupuncture needles with blue droplets oozing from them.

"Larry, what the heck are you doing?"

Larry pulled the needles out of his chest and arms, giving Chloe a faint smile. "Nothing."

Chloe wasn't buying it. "Do you think I'm stupid? Who were those people chasing us? What did they make you drink?"

"I honestly don't know."

Larry's face was serious.

He really had no clue who those people were or what they made him drink.

He'd managed to get most of it out, but some had mixed with his blood, and he could feel his body starting to stiffen.

"Really?" Chloe was skeptical.

"Honey, I swear, I don't know."

"Are you okay? You don't look so good. Should we go to the hospital?" Chloe noticed Larry's pale face and got worried, moving to support him.

Larry waved her off. "I'm fine. It's just a drug that messes with your sense of taste and makes your movements stiff. I got most of it out, but some is still in my blood. I probably can't drive. You take the wheel."

Larry tried to walk. His movements were stiff, but he managed. Chloe went to help him.

Larry waved her off again. "No need, I can handle it. I need to figure out what this drug is and whip up an antidote."

He slowly got into the passenger seat.

Chloe slid into the driver's seat and headed back towards downtown.

"Honey, are you really okay?"

"I'm fine. Just drive carefully."

Chloe asked, "Are we going home or to Medical Street?"

"Medical Street, of course. This medical conference is gonna be interesting." Larry had a playful grin. It was just the first day of the conference, and someone was already trying to keep him away.

This conference was going to be wild.

No way he was missing it.

"But what about your body?" Chloe was really worried.

It had been super dangerous earlier.

They'd almost crashed a bunch of times.

Larry smiled faintly. "Don't worry."

Larry was a legendary doctor; he knew his body well and making an antidote wouldn't be a big deal.

Chloe didn't say anything more and focused on driving.

Larry took out his phone.

His hand was almost like stone, making it hard to hold the phone, and he couldn't even bend his arm without feeling intense pain.

He called Matthew. "Where's the info I need?"

Yesterday, Matthew had used a powerful underground intelligence network to dig up some stuff but had only found bits and pieces about Nikolai.

"Larry, I only got some fragmented info."

"Send it over."

"Okay."

Matthew hung up and sent the info to Larry.

Larry got an email.

He opened it and started reading.

The email began with some photos.

The guy in the photos looked about sixty, wearing a suit, a bit overweight, with a beard.

Larry read the info Matthew sent: [Cormac Kingsley, originally named Cormac Sterling from Suncrest City, Summer Nation. Immigrated to Athendonis at 30changed his name . Now president of the National Medical Association of Athendonis.]

The info was pretty basic.

Larry looked at it, lost in thought.

Was this Cormac the Nikolai that Leif mentioned? Was he the one pulling the strings behind the scenes in Cedar Grove?
