Chapter 21 Public Humiliation
Maria went out to walk the dog; she didn't watch the news.
She didn't know about the press conference held by the chairman of Legion Lord, nor did she know that the Legion Group had canceled its cooperation with the Everjoy Company. She also didn't know that Chloe had threatened Victor with returning to the family in exchange for ten percent of the shares.
When she heard Chloe's words, she was stunned for a moment. "A ten percent share transfer agreement? What shares?"
She didn't react immediately.
Chloe said, "Mom, this is the transfer contract written by Grandpa, with his handwritten signature. As long as Dad signs it, we can inherit ten percent of the family's assets."
Maria quickly took the contract and started reading it carefully.
After reading it, she hugged the contract and kissed it frantically, laughing out loud. "It's true, it's really a transfer contract, ten percent of the shares! Victor finally gave us shares!"
"Mom, let me see." Sam also looked incredulous. The family's shares were all controlled by Victor, and other members of the Lewis family had some, but their family had none.
Maria excitedly handed it over. "Sam, didn't you want to change your car? I'll buy you a good one tomorrow, something that will make you look good!"
Sam looked at the contract, his face also showing joy, and hurriedly said, "Mom, this is ten percent of the shares. The dividends alone will be a considerable income. I'm planning to have a child. The house is too small. Mom, ask Dad to transfer five percent to me; I want to buy a new house!"
Maria said, "Your dad's shares will be yours sooner or later; there's no need to rush!"
"Mom, I have my eye on a dress that costs several thousand," Mindy also spoke up, pulling Maria's arm and acting cute. "Mom, in a little over a month, it will be my and Sam's wedding anniversary. I want to buy a nice dress."
"Okay, buy it!" Maria was in a good mood. After so many years, they finally got shares in the Everjoy Company.
Seeing her mom so happy, Chloe was also pleased. She couldn't help but tightly hold Larry's hand, looking at him with gratitude.
However, seeing Maria didn't even spare a glance at Chloe again after getting the share transfer contract, Larry said, "Mom, this contract was brought back by Chloe, for Dad."
"Shut up." Maria's face darkened, hands on her hips. "You're just a man married into the Lewis family; you have no right to speak here. Besides, I've raised her for over twenty years; this is what she should do."
Seeing Maria angry, Chloe quickly said, "Mom, I'm sorry, Larry didn't mean to offend you. This is indeed what I should do."
"Alright, come in." Maria was in a good mood and didn't want to argue with Larry, so she turned and went inside.
Chloe's face was filled with joy; she finally got Maria's approval.
However, Larry, looked helpless.
Chloe was too soft-hearted and too eager for her family's approval.
This also showed how much grievance and hardship she had endured over the years.
After entering the house, the family gathered to discuss the contract. Maria even called Scott, asking him to come back quickly to sign the contract.
Soon, Scott returned.
When he learned that Chloe had secured ten percent of the family business shares for him, he was stunned and couldn't help but ask, "Chloe, is this true?"
Chloe, sitting on the sofa, nodded. "Yes, Dad, it's true. Grandpa also wants me to return to the family."
"That's great." Scott laughed excitedly.
Maria shouted, "Alright, don't get too smug. It's not like you fought for it yourself. You've been so weak all your life. If it weren't for Chloe's capability, you wouldn't have any dignity in the Lewis family!"
Scott lowered his head, not daring to retort.
Chloe brought back the share transfer contract, and the whole family was very happy, planning to go out for a good meal to celebrate.
Although Scott didn't have much money, he was at least a company manager with a decent salary and had financed a Honda worth 30 thousand dollars.
Sam also had a car, bought with family money when he got married. Although it was only worth a little over 20 thousand dollars, it was enough as a means of transportation.
Sam drove off with Mindy.
Larry and Chloe got into Scott's car.
The family went to the city center and found a high-end restaurant.
Pavilion Restaurant was the most luxurious restaurant in Sunset City, with several levels of service.
First, there were Diamond Rooms, Gold Rooms, Silver Rooms, Bronze Rooms, Iron Rooms, and then the main hall.
Even in the main hall, a meal could cost several thousand dollars.
It was dinner time, and the main hall was already full, with a line of more than thirty people waiting.
Maria started complaining again, "Scott, you really are useless. Harry is a Bronze Member at Pavilion Restaurant; he never has to wait and goes straight to a private room.
"And you, a soldier with no power and no money. Look at Jack's son-in-law; he has status and is a Silver Member at Pavilion Restaurant. One phone call, and the staff comes out to greet him personally. How did my daughter end up marrying a poor guy?"
Having to wait for a meal ruined Maria's good mood.
She began to complain, criticizing Scott for his lack of ability and scolding Chloe for marrying a useless husband.
Larry was used to Maria's sarcasm and didn't want to argue.
While waiting in line, he said to Chloe, "Chloe, wait here for a bit. I'm going to the supermarket across the street to buy a pack of cigarettes."
"Okay." Chloe nodded.
Larry turned and went to the supermarket across the street.
"Isn't that Chloe? What happened to your face?" As they sat on the benches outside Pavilion Restaurant waiting for their turn, a mocking voice came.
Chloe looked up and saw a woman dressed provocatively, with a face full of foundation, carrying a handbag and walking over.
"Jane Johnson." Chloe instantly recognized her. She was a college classmate, born into the wealthy Johnson Family, and was the campus queen pursued by countless boys.
During college, Chloe was considered the ugliest woman on campus.
Jane looked at Chloe.
Recently, Chloe had become quite famous in Sunset City. Not only had she restored her appearance, but she had also gotten close to Leo, the chairman of Legion Lord. Then came the news that Frederick from the Hall Family had slashed her face.
After restoring her appearance, Chloe had been on the news and in the papers, being named the most beautiful woman in Sunset City by the media.
This made Jane jealous. She thought anugly woman didn't deserve the title of the most beautiful woman in Sunset City.
Seeing Chloe at the entrance of Pavilion Restaurant with her face still wrapped in bandages, Jane laughed out loud. "Look at yourself. You're not worthy of being the most beautiful woman in Sunset City. Everyone, come and see, this is Chloe from the Lewis family, previously named the most beautiful woman in Sunset City by the media. Look at her; she doesn't deserve the title at all."
Jane's voice attracted a lot of attention.
"Is this Chloe?"
"Is she the executive director of the Everjoy Company from the Lewis family? She doesn't look as pretty as in the news."
"I heard Chloe is being kept by Leo. I wouldn't accept a woman like that even if she throws herself at me."
Some unpleasant comments were heard.
Chloe's face showed anger. She and Jane were just classmates with no other interactions.
Now Jane was publicly humiliating her.
Chloe angrily said, "Jane, I haven't offended you, have I? Why are you mocking me?"
Jane walked over, looked at the bandages on Chloe's face, and, while Chloe wasn't paying attention, pulled them off, revealing several unhealed scars and a face full of wounds.
Jane bent over with laughter, pointing at Chloe with her slender finger. "Look, the most beautiful woman in Sunset City. This is the so-called most beautiful woman in Sunset City."
Although the Lewis family was sitting nearby, they turned their heads away, afraid that others would know they were related to Chloe.
Maria even moved her chair far away, not wanting to be recognized as Chloe's mother and be humiliated.
With the bandages pulled off, Chloe panicked, lowered her head, and didn't dare to look at anyone.
