Chapter 136 High School Classmates
With that thought in mind, Larry left the Lewis Family home and grabbed a cab to The Serpent Group.
On the way there, he called William. "William, who's running The Serpent Group now?"
"Mr. Bennett, I'm in charge for now," came William's response.
"Get me a suit and a mask. I'll be there soon."
William had no clue what Larry was up to but agreed. "I'll sort it out right away."
After the call, Larry closed his eyes to rest in the car. Soon, he arrived at The Serpent Group, an eighteen-story building.
This building used to belong to the Johnson Family, one of the Four Great Families, but it was handed over. William renamed it Jianglong Building when he took over, making it the headquarters of The Serpent Group. The Serpent Group was just established yesterday. Although the news was out, there hadn't been an official announcement or press conference yet.
However, job postings for The Serpent Group were already on some recruitment websites. They were hiring for everything from vice presidents to regular employees and salespeople.
The Serpent Group was offering high salaries, attracting many job seekers. Even some employed folks were tempted by the benefits and wanted to apply.
Outside The Serpent Group's headquarters, a Lamborghini glided into the parking garage, pulling up flawlessly.
A tall, beautiful woman in a red dress, Abigail Martinez, stepped out, catching the eyes of many passersby.
At the same time, Chloe arrived outside the GoldenPeak Global Group building. As she gazed up at the towering eighteen-story building, she felt a bit dazed and nervous. She was about to meet the man she had saved ten years ago, the same man with the ghost mask who had rescued her from Frederick.
Images of that fateful night flickered in her mind, the echo of leather shoes striking the ground and the haunting visage of the ghost mask vividly replaying in her thoughts.
After a brief moment, she took a deep breath and walked towards the building.
Abigail, making her own entrance, arrived at the front of the building almost simultaneously. The two women’s paths crossed at the entrance, and they exchanged a glance.
Abigail looked at Chloe and took off her sunglasses. "Chloe, is that you?"
"Who are you?" Chloe asked, not recognizing the tall woman in the red dress with red wavy hair and sexy red lips.
"I'm Abigail."
"Abigail, is that really you?" Chloe exclaimed. Abigail was her high school classmate and best friend back then.
After the incident, Abigail had transferred schools and went abroad. Chloe didn't expect to meet her here.
Abigail stepped forward, taking Chloe's hand into hers with a smile. "What a coincidence! Let's find a place to sit and chat."
"Sure," Chloe said, excited.
They hadn't seen each other in ten years. They went to a coffee shop near GoldenPeak Global Group.
"Chloe, I just got back to the country. I heard about what happened to you. I can't believe you've been through so much, but I'm glad you made it through," Abigail said.
Chloe, eager to shift the focus, asked, "Enough about me. Tell me about yourself. Where have you been these past ten years?"
Abigail sighed. "Back then, my boyfriend's family had some issues, and I was really upset, so I went to the M country with my family. I just came back recently. I heard the Bennett Family still has descendants alive and that they reclaimed their former assets from the Four Great Families. So, I thought I'd come over and maybe apply for the vice president position here."
Abigail looked at Chloe. "By the way, I heard a rumor that you got burned saving someone from the Bennett Villa ten years ago?"
"Yeah," Chloe nodded.
"Who was it?" Abigail asked, sipping her coffee.
Chloe shook her head. "I don't know. He was already on fire when I saved him. Things were so chaotic back then, and I didn't get a clear look. I just pulled him out."
"He never came to find you?" Abigail asked.
Chloe looked troubled. "He did, sort of. But he wore a ghost mask, so I don't know how he looks like. I'm here at The Serpent Group today to meet him and clear some things up."
"I see."
"By the way, your boyfriend from ten years ago was from the Bennett Family? How come I didn't know?" Chloe asked.
Abigail sighed. "We had only been dating for a few months. We planned to announce our relationship after high school, but the Bennett Family had their incident before we could."
Chloe asked, "What was his name?"
"Larry," Abigail replied.
Chloe was slightly taken aback.
"I remember now," Abigail said, "I heard the Lewis Family is looking for a son-in-law for you, and his name is also Larry. What a coincidence."
"Yeah, it's quite a coincidence," Chloe said, snapping out of her daze. With so many people in Sunset City, it was not unusual to have the same name. They chatted for a while in the coffee shop, catching up on each other's lives over the years.
After a moment, Chloe hesitated and then said, "Yesterday, a mysterious Mr. Bennett sent gifts to the Lewis Mansion for me. I'm here today to find this mysterious Mr. Bennett and tell him I'm already married and he should take back the gift."
Abigail became interested and asked with a smile, "He must be the person you saved ten years ago, right? Did he say his name?"
Chloe shook her head. "No, I only know he's called Mr. Bennett and he's the chairman of The Serpent Group."
Abigail laughed. "Well, you saved him ten years ago. It's normal for him to send gifts now, especially if he’s interested in marrying you."
"But I'm already married. My husband treats me very well, and I have no intention of getting a divorce," Chloe said, shaking her head slightly.
"I wonder who you saved ten years ago. I hope it's Larry," Abigail said and sighed.
Larry was Abigail's first love. She hadn't dated anyone all these years because she couldn't forget that youthful romance.
Speaking of Larry, Abigail had a sudden thought and looked at Chloe. "Chloe, could it be that the person you saved ten years ago is Larry, and your husband Larry is from the Bennett Family?"
"How is that possible?" Chloe immediately shook her head.
She knew what kind of person her husband was. How could he be the mysterious Mr. Bennett? Although her husband had some money, it was acquired through his position, and he had already been expelled from the military. There was a significant difference between having two hundred million dollars and several billion.
Moreover, she couldn’t imagine her husband as the man behind the ghost mask. If he was, why would he wear a ghost mask?
Abigail laughed. "I don't think so either. If it were, that would be too much of a coincidence. And if it turns out to be so, Chloe, don't blame me for competing with you."
Chloe chuckled at Abigail’s playful challenge. "After all these years, you still have the same personality. If you like him, take him. My husband Larry is useless, lazy, and has no ambition. He even asks me for money to buy cigarettes."
"Alright, since you're also going to The Serpent Group, let's go together and see who you saved ten years ago. Let's see if the person you saved is my ex-boyfriend Larry."
Chloe felt a surge of anticipation. She looked forward to meeting the special person.
