Chapter 385 Discovered
Originally, Alistair wanted to just get rid of Larry and be done with it.
As long as Larry was around, Alistair couldn't relax, even if Larry wasn't a threat anymore.
Larry had stepped down from his position, but he still had the Execution Sword, which made it tricky for Alistair to act without facing backlash.
Now that Larry was just a regular guy and had handed over the Execution Sword, nobody cared what happened to him.
As long as it was done quietly, there'd be no issues.
When Alistair found out Larry was on the hunt for something, he had a change of heart.
Whatever Larry was after had to be important, and Alistair wanted to snag it before dealing with him.
After hanging up the phone, Alistair still felt uneasy and called back.
"Are the guys you found solid?"
A gravelly voice on the other end replied, "Boss, relax. They're rock solid. This dude was with me back in the day when we were mercs overseas. We're like brothers. With the cash we're offering, he'd even take a shot at the Summer Nation King if he had to."
Alistair paused for a moment and said, "Larry's not your average Joe. Even if he's lost his edge, I can't be too careful. Remember Kairo? You gotta head to Sunset City yourself, keep tabs on Larry, and snag whatever he's after."
There was a slight pause on the other end.
"Boss, he's got quite a crew with him this time, including Chloe, Abigail, Howard, and a bunch of soldiers."
"Take 'em all out. Leave no trace."
"Got it."
Alistair hung up and tossed the phone onto the table, leaning back on the couch. He rubbed his face with both hands, muttering, "Larry, you're such a headache. Even when you're down, you still give me grief."
Sunset City, Dragon Mountain.
Larry had just finished dinner when he felt hungry again. After eating a bit more, he felt sleepy and went to rest in the tent.
Abigail and Chloe sat by the campfire.
The flames crackled, sending sparks into the air.
Abigail said, "It's getting late. You should get some sleep."
Chloe glanced at her and asked, "What about you?"
Abigail shook her head slightly. "I'm not tired yet, and Larry's a light sleeper. He wakes up easily and needs to eat every time. His condition started worsening today, and who knows what might happen. I'll keep watch."
Abigail's words made Chloe feel ashamed.
She was Larry's wife, yet she hadn't thought of these things.
She felt like a failure, a failed wife. No wonder Larry left her; she had truly broken his heart.
"Then I'll sleep for a bit. You watch the first half of the night, and wake me if you get tired."
Chloe was indeed tired. She yawned and headed to her tent, crawling inside.
Abigail continued to keep watch, closely monitoring Larry's condition.
Before midnight, Larry woke up hungry.
He weakly turned over and sat up.
As soon as he did, Abigail came in.
"Awake?"
Larry picked up his phone and saw it was already midnight. He was surprised. "You haven't slept yet?"
Abigail smiled. "Couldn't sleep. Hungry?"
Larry nodded slightly.
"Wait a moment, I'll heat some food."
Abigail went out.
They had come prepared, with a small generator and an electric stove.
Abigail heated some food.
She wanted to feed Larry, but he took it and ate by himself.
After eating, he yawned. "It's late. You should get some sleep, too."
"Okay."
Abigail nodded gently and left the tent.
Larry lay back down.
But sleep just wouldn't come.
His mind kept drifting back to Abigail. He felt guilty about her, but he couldn't offer her much.
"Man," he sighed, trying to push away the tangled thoughts.
He closed his eyes, and eventually, sleep took over.
That night, he woke up several times.
Once from pain, once from hunger, and once from the cold.
Now, he felt like he was freezing, as if he were stuck in an icebox.
Abigail stayed up all night, keeping watch outside.
Chloe slept like a log.
When she finally woke up, it was already morning.
She rolled over, grabbed her phone, and saw it was past 8 a.m. She slapped her forehead in frustration, muttering to herself, "Chloe, you really can sleep."
She got up, tidied her messy hair, and headed outside.
The fire was still going.
Larry was sitting in a wheelchair, with Abigail standing behind him, massaging his head.
Chloe walked over and called out, "Abigail."
Abigail glanced at her and motioned for her to keep it down.
Chloe came closer and saw Larry asleep in the chair.
Seeing Abigail's tired face, Chloe whispered, "Did you stay up all night?"
"Yeah," Abigail sighed softly. "Last night, Larry had another episode. He woke up in pain and from the cold. His skin feels so cold now, like touching ice."
Chloe couldn't help but touch Larry's face.
It was indeed cold.
She looked at Abigail and said, "Thanks. I'll take over now. You should get some rest."
Abigail was truly exhausted. She nodded. "Okay, call me if anything happens."
"Go on, go on."
Chloe waved her hand gently.
Abigail turned and went to rest in the tent.
Larry yawned and woke up, looking at Howard beside him. "Mr. Cruz, any news? Have the divers returned?"
Howard replied promptly, "Yeah, some are back. They've found another cave downstream, but there are so many caves. They're checking them one by one."
Larry nodded slightly.
"Larry, have some warm water."
Chloe brought over a bottle of warm water, opened it, and held it to Larry's lips.
"I got it."
Larry took the cup, held it, and sipped gently.
The warm water made him feel much better.
He handed the cup back to Chloe.
Then, he stared at the water, lost in thought.
He hoped the divers would bring him good news.
Time ticked by slowly.
Before he knew it, it was noon.
Larry was eating when a figure emerged from the water.
As soon as the person surfaced, they removed their oxygen mask and shouted, "Found it, found it!"
Hearing this, Larry put down his spoon and stood up excitedly.
The diver quickly swam to shore.
He approached and reported, "Sir, we've found the stone carving you mentioned. It's a dragon head, several dozen feet tall."
"Finally found it."
Larry looked relieved. "Did you find anything else nearby?"
"No."
"I need to see it myself. Get me a diving suit."
"That's not happening."
Chloe quickly held Larry back, advising, "You can't go. In your condition, you can't even walk properly. If you go underwater, you'll be swept away in no time."
"I have to go."
Larry's face was resolute.
He knew the cave's situation and needed to see it himself to be sure.
"But how can you go like this?" Chloe was worried.
"It's fine."
Larry waved his hand slightly.
Howard chimed in, "The river's pretty deep. How about this: I'll use my connections to get a small submarine from upstream."
"That would be best." Larry nodded.
"I'll get on it."
Howard stepped aside, took out his phone, and made a call.
