Chapter 395 Abigail's Strength

Abigail sped through the night, the engine's roar echoing in the darkness.

In less than twenty minutes, she pulled up at the military hospital.

This place was no ordinary hospital. It was heavily guarded, and only military personnel and their families could get treatment here. Anyone admitted had deep ties to the military.

A crowd had gathered outside the inpatient building, all eyes fixed on a window on the eighth floor.

"Isn't that Chloe, the new miracle doctor of Sunset City? What's she doing?"

"I heard it's because of Larry," someone whispered.

"Larry? That guy who married into the family?"

"He's more than just a guy who married in," the person said mysteriously. "She didn't know Larry's true identity and insisted on a divorce. Then Southwild was in crisis, and Larry showed up at her birthday party in his battle gear, revealing himself as Black Dragon. She realized what she had lost. Now she wants him back, but Larry..."

The whispers spread through the crowd, faces filled with mixed emotions.

When Larry arrived, he saw Chloe sitting on the eighth-floor windowsill, his face turning pale.

He tried to rush into the building, but his weakened body made him stumble after a few steps.

Abigail quickly caught him, her voice filled with concern. "Larry, slow down! You're still weak. We can't rush. She'll be fine, let's go slowly."

Larry looked at Abigail gratefully and said, "Thanks."

Abigail smiled gently, but her heart ached. She had given Larry all her care and love, but he always kept a polite distance, his heart belonging to someone else.

"I'll help you up," Abigail offered.

"No, I can manage," Larry declined, looking back at the eighth-floor window with a complicated expression as he walked towards the ward.

The elevator quickly reached the eighth floor.

"Move aside, move aside!" Larry called out to the anxious Lewis family members blocking the door.

Seeing Larry, they parted like he was their savior.

As soon as he entered the room, Maria grabbed his arm urgently. "Larry, please talk to Chloe! She's been sitting there for over an hour!"

Larry looked at Chloe, her face streaked with tears, and tried to keep his voice calm. "Chloe, stop this. Come down, and we can talk."

Chloe turned, her tear-streaked face full of despair. "Why are you here? You have Abigail with you. Just let me die; it doesn't matter to you!"

Larry wanted to say something firm, to remind her they were divorced, but he swallowed his words. He didn't want to provoke her into doing something rash.

Larry comforted, "Alright, let's talk. Just come down first, okay?"

"I won't come down!" Chloe screamed, "Unless you agree to remarry me, I'll jump! Didn't you say you'd protect me forever? Why doesn't that count now?"

Seeing Chloe's hysterics, Larry felt a mix of emotions, his voice turning cold and detached.

"Remarry? For what? I'm nothing now—not Black Dragon, not a marshal, just a sick man who doesn't know how long he has left. What good would remarrying me do?"

Each word cut into Chloe's heart like a knife.

"Did you ever really love me? If you did, why did you insist on the divorce because of the Lewis family?"

"If you loved me, why did you take that billion-dollar settlement?"

"You loved the status of Black Dragon, the power and money, not me."

Larry turned to the silent Lewis family. "Even if I agreed to remarry, would the Lewis family really accept it?"

The Lewis family fell into an awkward silence. They couldn't refute him because it was true.

Larry had helped them so much in secret, yet they always looked down on him, full of misunderstanding and prejudice.

Chloe was speechless, choking on her sobs. "I do love you, Larry! I can't live without you. My world is dark without you. Please come back. I know I was wrong. I'll love you and take care of you. The Lewis family will agree, right, Mom? Grandpa?"

Maria nodded quickly. "Yes, yes, as long as Chloe is okay, we'll agree to anything."

Victor also spoke up. "Larry, come back. The Lewis family wronged you before. Now, without your position, we'll take care of you. We'll treat your illness. Just come back, and we'll treat you like family."

Helen chimed in. "Larry, Chloe really loves you."

At that moment, Abigail walked through the crowd, standing quietly beside Larry.

"Abigail! You bitch! How dare you come here after stealing my husband?" Chloe's emotions flared up even more.

Abigail ignored Chloe's insults, her eyes fixed on Larry, her voice soft but firm.

"I know you still have a place for her in your heart. Whatever you decide, I won't blame you."

She paused, a bitter smile on her face.

"Actually, I took care of you because I saw you were hurting. I liked the hero Black Dragon. Now you're nothing, and so sick. How could I still like you?"

"Forget it. I'll have your things sent to the Lewis family."

With that, Abigail turned and walked away, leaving a proud and resolute figure behind.

But as she turned, her facade of strength crumbled, tears streaming down her face. She covered her mouth to stifle her sobs.

Larry watched Abigail leave, feeling deep guilt.

He knew he had let down a woman who truly loved him.

But he also knew the path ahead was dangerous. Even if he didn't stay with Chloe, he couldn't drag Abigail into it. Alistair would use her against him.

Being with Abigail would only harm her.

He didn't want to burden Chloe either, but he hadn't expected her to threaten her life.

Watching Abigail disappear from sight, Larry sighed deeply, making a decision.

Alistair didn't know he had the second volume of the medical manual or that he had learned to cultivate Qi. Alistair thought he was dying, that he was finished.

So, continuing the charade was the best option.

He would create a false sense of security for Alistair while secretly planning to thwart his schemes, preparing for the upcoming elections and political purge.

Joining the Lewis family as a wheelchair-bound invalid might be the best cover, allowing him to deceive Alistair and other enemies.

With this in mind, Larry turned to Chloe, his voice low. "Come down first."

Though he still had feelings for Chloe, her actions had deeply disappointed him.

"You... you have to promise me first!" Chloe looked at Larry with tear-filled eyes, full of hope and fear.

Larry closed his eyes, as if making the hardest decision of his life. "Alright, I promise."

Hearing this, Chloe smiled through her tears, reaching out her arms. "Come and help me down."

Larry shook his head with a bitter smile. "In my condition, I don't have the strength to carry you."

Though his mental state had improved after meditating, his body was still too weak to support Chloe's weight.

Several nurses quickly moved forward, carefully helping Chloe down from the windowsill.

Her leg was already injured, the wound not fully healed. Climbing onto the windowsill had aggravated it, and fresh blood stained the bandages.

A doctor rushed in, frowning as he examined her. "The wound has torn. We need to clean and re-bandage it immediately to prevent infection."

The nurses busied themselves with medical supplies, the room filled with tension.

Larry looked at Chloe, pale on the bed, feeling conflicted.

Was this the price of their new beginning?
