Chapter 258 Refusing Ten Billion Dollars
Larry scratched his nose and asked, "Why are you staring at me like that?"
"Who exactly are you?" Abigail asked again, her mind blown by Larry's true identity.
Who would've guessed that the guy who married into the Lewis Family was actually the secret owner of the Epoch Group? He spent billions to buy NextGen City and now plans to invest another trillion to build a business empire.
How much money did this guy have? Abigail couldn't even begin to imagine.
Larry gave a small smile and said, "I'm Larry, the Lewis Family's son-in-law, Chloe's husband."
"No," Abigail shot back, "You're Black Dragon Larry."
Larry corrected her, "Black Dragon is long gone. Anyway, do you need something else? If not, I'm outta here."
Larry got up to leave.
"Wait," Abigail called out.
Larry turned back with a grin, "Still gonna question my zero performance or fire me?"
Abigail wanted to say something but didn't have the guts to speak up.
Finally, she said, "I'll work hard and not let you down."
Now she got it. She was hired as a department manager and then bumped up to vice president. Without Larry's say-so, how could she have gotten that promotion?
It was pretty funny how she mistook a big shot for a nobody.
She'd never been so wrong about someone before.
"Alright." Larry nodded, said nothing more, and walked out.
As Larry opened the door and left, Abigail slumped on the sofa in the lounge area. Her face was a mix of emotions, and she couldn't figure out what she was feeling.
'Who exactly is he?'
Abigail thought, but she was stumped.
Larry, who married into the Lewis Family, turned out to be the guy who bought NextGen City, the secret owner of the Epoch Group.
Since that time at Maple Grove Mansion, she'd been suspicious of Larry.
She thought he was Black Dragon. Now it seemed he had another identity.
But she couldn't figure out who he really was.
Abigail muttered softly, "He really is a mysterious man."
Larry had just walked out of the Epoch Tower when a luxury car pulled up. Yorick got out and quickly walked over to Larry.
Yorick spoke respectfully, "Larry."
Larry looked at Yorick and said, "What's up?"
Yorick handed over a check, "This is a check for ten billion dollars, to thank you for saving Esmeralda. It's also a fee for hiring you as Esmeralda's private doctor."
Larry was pretty surprised. Not many people could just whip out ten billion dollars like that.
What was Esmeralda's deal to be able to come up with ten billion dollars to thank him?
But he didn't need the money; it was just a number to him.
"I'm not interested."
Larry was unfazed and said, "She was just lucky to meet me, that's all."
With that, Larry turned and left.
Yorick frowned. This was ten billion dollars, a life-changing amount for most people.
Countless people had lost their lives for money. Now he was offering ten billion dollars, and Larry turned it down.
He muttered, "Could it be that Larry really is someone with strength who doesn't care about money?"
Larry didn't head back. He went to the military hospital to see Frank. Yorick also went back.
"Esmeralda, he turned it down."
"What?" Esmeralda's voice shot up, "Ten billion dollars, and he just said no?"
"Yeah, I find it weird too. That's ten billion dollars. The guy works at the Epoch Group for a measly five thousand a month. With bonuses, he might hit twenty thousand tops. And with the Lewis Family going bankrupt, you'd think he'd need the cash. Why'd he refuse?"
Yorick was just as baffled.
"Esmeralda, could it be that he's really that capable and doesn't care about money?"
Esmeralda shot him a look, "Are you kidding? Who in their right mind would turn down that kind of money?"
Yorick thought for a moment. Yeah, it was hard to believe anyone would pass up that kind of cash.
He pondered a bit and said, "There's only one explanation."
Esmeralda looked at him, waiting.
Yorick continued, "He knows you're from the Vale Family in the North. He knows how powerful your family is. It's not that he doesn't care about ten billion dollars; he probably wants to use this chance to ask for even more."
Esmeralda considered it. That made sense.
She then said, "Yorick, he can cure my illness. My life depends on him. No matter the cost, you have to get him here."
Yorick nodded, "Esmeralda, I've already informed Mr. Vale. He's dropped everything and is on his way. He should be in Sunset City before dark."
That afternoon, Larry hung out at the hospital with Frank.
Frank's physical condition was off the charts, way better than the average person. His body had this crazy self-healing ability, several times faster than normal. Since waking up, his mental state had been great.
But he wanted to smoke, and Amelia, who was taking care of him, wouldn't let him. It wasn't until Larry showed up that he got his wish.
As evening rolled around, Larry left the military hospital and headed back to the Lewis Family.
Meanwhile, at the Vale Family villa, a middle-aged man walked in, surrounded by bodyguards. This guy was about fifty, built like a tank, with a wild beard and a rugged look.
This wild-looking man was none other than Xerxes Vale, the overlord of the North, a big shot controlling all the mining business up there. Anything underground, he had a hand in it.
"Dad."
Esmeralda ran to him and threw herself into his arms.
"Esmeralda."
Xerxes Vale laughed and picked her up.
"Mr. Vale," Yorick greeted respectfully.
Xerxes put Esmeralda down and asked, "Yorick, who exactly is this guy who saved Esmeralda?"
Yorick laid it all out, "His name is Larry."
He went over Larry's story, including the Lewis Family's current situation and how Larry turned down the ten billion dollar check.
"Seriously, someone turned down ten billion dollars?" Xerxes was shocked.
Esmeralda pouted, "Dad, he saved me. You have to hire him."
Xerxes patted her head and smiled, "Don't worry, Esmeralda, I'll make sure we get him."
"Yorick, set up a meeting with the heads of the Martinez Family and the Carter Family. I want to see them."
"Got it."
Yorick immediately went to make the arrangements.
