Chapter 17 Expelled from the Family
Larry didn't want to get involved, so he said, "Give me some money; I'll go buy breakfast for Chloe."
Frank said, "I'll transfer it to you on WhatsApp."
Larry left the clinic, went to the street, and bought soup and pizza for Chloe.
When he returned, Chloe was already awake.
Chloe's face was wrapped in bandages. She lay on the bed, her eyes vacant, staring at the ceiling in a daze.
Larry walked over, put down the breakfast he bought, and gently called, "Chloe."
Chloe didn't respond.
Larry held her hand. "It's over; everything is over."
Chloe turned slightly, looked at Larry, and sobbed softly, her body trembling lightly, her face filled with fear. "I offended Frederick. I'm done for. You should go. I don't want to let you suffer together with me."
Larry comforted her, saying, "It's okay. I saw the news this morning. Frederick is dead, and the Lewis Family is fine."
"What?" Chloe was shocked, looking at Larry in disbelief.
Frederick was a general; it was impossible for him to die so easily.
Larry said, "The news said he was killed by a man wearing a black ghost mask. The police are now hunting for the murderer."
Hearing this, Chloe was stunned.
A man with a black ghost mask...
She vaguely remembered that when she was desperate, helpless, and on the verge of collapse, a man with a black ghost mask appeared, but she didn't see clearly before she passed out.
"Was he really dead?" Chloe was dazed. She couldn't believe that the powerful Frederick was dead.
"Yes. Come and have some soup."
Larry lifted Chloe up, letting her lean against him, and picked up a spoon to feed her.
Chloe opened her mouth slightly and ate the soup.
The whole day, Chloe was in a daze, drifting in and out of sleep, but she would wake up from nightmares, screaming for Frederick to spare her.
Larry knew that Chloe had suffered a severe blow, her spirit nearly collapsed, leaving a huge shadow that would take time to heal.
The outside world was abuzz with discussions about the Hall Family and Frederick's death.
Larry stayed with Chloe the whole time.
The first day, Chloe was in a daze.
However, with Larry's care, she gradually came out of the shadow, from being silent to being able to communicate with Larry.
Larry also promised confidently that if he could heal her once, he could heal her a second time.
Three days later, Chloe completely came out of the shadow.
However, the wounds on her face had not healed.
"Larry, it's been so many days. I want to go home and see my parents. I'm afraid they are worried," Chloe said.
"Okay."
Larry nodded and had Frank drive the unlicensed van to the Lewis Family.
The door of Chole's house was closed.
With Larry's support, Chloe gently knocked on the door.
Soon, a middle-aged man came to open the door. Seeing Chloe, his face lit up with joy, and he hurriedly pulled her inside. "Chloe, you're back. Are you okay?"
"Dad," Chloe called out. "I'm fine."
"Scott, who is it?" A voice came from inside. Maria walked over, and when she saw Chloe, her face immediately turned sullen, and she said coldly, "You're just a bringer of misfortune. You don't need to come back."
"Mom," Chloe called her.
"Don't call me mom. I don't have a daughter like you." Maria looked at Chloe's bandaged face with disdain.
Because of Chloe, she had been kidnapped and suffered a lot.
Fortunately, Frederick was dead, or else the Lewis Family would have been doomed.
When Victor returned, he was furious and ordered Chloe to be stripped of her position as executive director of the Everjoy Company, expelled from the Lewis Family, and publicly declared that Chloe was no longerthe member of the Lewis Familye.
"Maria, what are you doing?" Scott frowned and said, "Even though my dad expelled Chloe from the Lewis Family, she is still our daughter!"
Maria immediately put her hands on her hips and said coldly, "No one dares to defy the Dad's words. Don't forget, you still receive a salary from the Everjoy Company. If you make Dad angry, you'll lose your job, and without a job, you can't pay the mortgage."
Then, she pointed at Chloe standing at the door, scolding, "Get out. I don't have a daughter like you. Because of you, your dad has no status in the Lewis Family. Look at Harry and Jack, even the other new-born descendants of the Lewis Family have shares in the Everjoy Company. They live comfortably just on the dividends!"
The more Maria spoke, the angrier she got, and she slammed the door shut.
Chloe's eyes filled with tears, which rolled down her cheeks.
She knew she had let her parents down, making her parents lose their dignity.
However, she never imagined they would refuse her entry into her own home.
She knelt at the door, pleading bitterly, "Dad, Mom, I know I was wrong. Please open the door."
Larry watched her, feeling guilty. He wanted to help Chloe up and comfort her, "Chloe, get up. It's okay if we don't go back to this house."
However, Chloe remained crying and knocking on the door.
Soon, the door opened again, and Maria threw out some suitcases, angrily scolding, "Get out of here."
At this moment, a young man in his mid-twenties walked out of the house.
He was dressed smartly and looked quite handsome. He said, "Mom, Chloe is pitiful enough. Even if she was stripped of her position as executive director and expelled from the family, we can't just turn her away from her home. Larry is just a poor guy who retired from the military, with no job and no money. If you don't let Chloe in, where will they go?"
The speaker was Chloe's brother, Sam Lewis.
He also worked at the Everjoy Company and usually didn't live here. After getting married, he bought a house in the city. He only came back temporarily because of the family incident.
"Mom, please, don't drive me away." Chloe knelt in front of Maria, holding her pants.
"Get out." Maria kicked Chloe away.
She slammed the door shut.
Larry helped the crying Chloe up, wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, held her face, and said tenderly, "Chloe, I'll take you to the Imperial Residence. My friend won't be back for a while, so we can stay there temporarily. When your parents are no longer angry, we can come back."
However, no matter what Larry said, Chloe couldn't hear anything.
However, Chloe was beyond consolation. She was overwhelmed with feelings of inadequacy and guilt, blaming herself for her family’s loss of dignity and her own perceived uselessness.
She collapsed into Larry's arms, crying sadly.
"I'm useless. I'm a burden to others. I hate myself. Why did I rush into the fire to save the person back then? I regret it so much!"
Chloe's current situation was all because of rushing into the fire to save people ten years ago.
If not for that day, her life would have been completely different.
Hearing these words, Larry felt very sad.
Guilt surged in him, and he held the crying Chloe tightly, apologizing repeatedly, "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry."
