Chapter 271 Abigail's Invitation
Larry knew Chloe was going to be pissed.
"Babe, let me explain."
"Explain what? Can't we use that money to buy a house? You wanna live with your parents forever? What do you want me to say?"
"No, I didn't blow that much cash. Don't believe their crap. I just hired a hacker to tweak the medical app and mess with the data."
"Still lying to me? You think I'm stupid?"
"Alright, fine. I did spend some money. But to me, you're worth every penny. No matter how much I spend, it's worth it."
"Where'd you get the money?" Chloe pressed.
"My own." Larry chuckled.
"Stop laughing, be serious."
Larry immediately shut up.
Chloe asked again, "One more time, where did the money come from? Did you do something illegal?"
Larry didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
But yeah, the money did come from a sketchy place.
"Frank lent it to me," Larry said, feeling helpless. "Frank's family is loaded, so I borrowed it from him."
Chloe was fuming that Larry borrowed so much money without telling her.
"Babe, don't worry. I'll make big money soon." Larry held her hand and said softly, "I won't let you suffer. Trust me, once this is all over, I'll give you a wedding that'll blow everyone's mind and make you the happiest woman on earth."
Chloe sighed.
Global Nexus Group had gone bankrupt and owed a ton of money.
Luckily, Everjoy Company was still standing. It just needed a bit of funding to get back on its feet.
And the shares of Everjoy Company hadn't been reclaimed yet. Once Everjoy was back on track, she could get good dividends each time, which would help pay off the debt quickly.
"Alright, go take a nap. You have to go to the company this afternoon. I'll clean up." Chloe softened.
She knew Larry was just trying to make her happy.
But the cost was too high.
"It's okay, I'll do it. Babe, you go rest."
Larry led Chloe back to the bedroom.
After getting her settled, he went to the living room and started cleaning up the lunch dishes.
By the time he finished, it was already 1 PM.
He went back to the room to say goodbye to Chloe and then left.
He drove to a suburban repair shop, which was the base of Grim Reaper's underground intel network.
Chloe was about to take a nap when she got a call from Abigail.
"Chloe, you free this afternoon?"
"Yeah, why?"
"I'm free too. Wanna go shopping with me?"
"Sure."
After agreeing with Abigail, Chloe got dressed and headed out.
She quickly met up with Abigail at the agreed spot.
They walked into the mall hand in hand.
Abigail started gossiping. "How'd you meet Larry? Spill the tea."
Chloe was a bit stunned, then shook her head and said, "There's not much to say."
"Come on, tell me." Abigail shook Chloe's arm.
"Alright." Chloe reluctantly began, "My grandpa was looking for a husband for me. Larry applied and my grandpa picked him. That's how I married him."
"That simple?" Abigail was surprised.
"Yeah, that simple."
Abigail frowned, thinking for a moment, then asked, "By the way, have you noticed anything weird about him?"
Chloe looked at Abigail and asked, "Unusual? What do you mean?"
"Nothing," Abigail replied, dropping the subject.
It seemed Chloe really didn't know about Larry's true identity. Abigail was puzzled why Larry, Chloe's husband, would keep such a big secret. And he had hidden it so well that she only recently found out he was the boss behind the Epoch Group.
A NextGen City worth trillions of dollars wasn't just some inflated market value. What did a trillion dollars even mean? How many people in the world could come up with that kind of money?
Larry arrived at the suburban repair shop. In its underground secret room, Lyra was already waiting.
Larry walked in.
"Larry," a clear and loud voice greeted him.
Larry waved his hand slightly and walked towards the sofa, sitting down.
Lyra and Valerian stood up simultaneously.
"Larry," they spoke in unison.
Larry waved his hand slightly and said, "Sit down."
They sat down.
Larry asked, "Has Cason sent any messages?"
Lyra shook her head and said, "He hasn't sent any messages since he arrived in Sunset City last night."
"Larry," Valerian hesitated.
Larry glanced at him and said, "Speak your mind."
Valerian looked at Lyra.
Larry waved his hand slightly and said, "It's okay, we're all on the same side."
"I'll step out," Lyra said, being considerate, and left the secret room.
Valerian then said, "There's a rumor in the underground world that the top ten assassins have secretly entered Summer Nation and infiltrated Sunset City."
Larry's interest was piqued, and he squinted his eyes, asking, "The top ten assassins?"
Valerian nodded and said, "This news has already spread on the dark web. The one who released the news is the Shadow Syndicate, and they intend to kill you."
"They want to kill me? How bold," Larry smiled faintly.
"Don't underestimate them," Valerian warned. "The top ten assassins are all highly skilled and extremely capable in assassination."
Larry knew how strong top-tier assassins were. Lyra was one of them. Her skills surpassed those of experts from twenty-eight countries.
Larry was confident. As long as these assassins followed the rules and didn't harm Chloe, they would all die if they came after him. However, Larry didn't plan to kill them all. Instead, he intended to recruit them, and if possible, take over the Shadow Syndicate for his own use.
He called out, "Lyra."
Lyra walked in and stood to the side, saying, "Larry."
"Do you know about the top ten assassins being mobilized?"
Lyra nodded. In the underground world, there was a dark web accessible only to special people. She had seen the news there and was about to inform Larry, but he already knew.
She looked serious. "The top ten assassins are all as strong as I am."
Larry asked, "What rank are you?"
"Eighth."
"Alright."
Larry knew her strength, and being ranked eighth made sense. He looked at Lyra and said, "There will definitely be a fierce battle at Flamecrest tonight. You might be in danger, so think it over."
Lyra said firmly, "You saved my life. It's my luck to work for you. Even if I die, it's okay."
"Alright, let's get ready."
Next, Larry, Valerian, Lyra, and others gathered to discuss the plan for the night's action.
