Chapter 406 Alistair's Doubts

Trinity left, and Larry sat cross-legged on the floor, starting his meditation and training.

Meanwhile, at Aurora Citadel...

Alistair sat on the couch, his face dark and brooding, fiddling with a gun in his hand. In front of him, a middle-aged man knelt on the floor. The man was around forty, with a plain appearance and a long scar on his face that made him look somewhat menacing.

"Talk. What are you gonna do?" Alistair asked coldly, still toying with the gun.

The man on the floor trembled and said, "Boss, please, give me another chance. Give me three days, and I promise I'll find out who infiltrated the research base and stole the data. I'll make sure to get it back."

"Three days. You got three days. If you don't get the data back by then, you can go die. And remember, kill anyone who's seen the research data."

"Y-yes, sir," the man nodded vigorously.

"Get out, you useless piece of trash," Alistair spat.

The man scrambled to his feet and hurriedly left. After he was gone, an elderly man emerged from another room. He was dressed in vintage medieval attire, with white hair and a beard. This was Alfonso.

Alistair rubbed his forehead and asked, "What do you think about the stolen research data?"

Alfonso sat down and replied indifferently, "You've always handled these matters. I haven't been involved, so I don't have much to say. But you, if that person finds out, you're in trouble."

Alistair's expression grew serious. "It's really strange. The research facility is heavily guarded, and the lab is full of security measures. Who could have the skill to steal the research data without a trace?"

"Do you have backups?" Alfonso asked.

Alistair nodded. "Yes, but the data leak needs to be dealt with quickly."

"How is the research going?" Alfonso asked again.

"It's pretty advanced. The mortality rate has dropped significantly, but the virus still invades the brain's nervous system, causing madness. Once infected, a person won't live long—at most three years. Three years is too short; we need to keep improving it."

Alfonso nodded lightly.

Alistair fell into deep thought for a while before asking, "Could it be Larry causing trouble behind the scenes?"

"Hmm?" Alfonso was taken aback. "Why do you say that?"

"It's just a hunch. I feel like he knows something. A while ago, when he was still at Aurora Citadel, he came to ask me about events from a hundred years ago. He seemed to know about the plan from back then. I'm puzzled about who told him."

Alfonso remained silent.

Alistair continued, "Alden was kidnapped, and I suspect Larry. I've had people watching him, but his health is deteriorating. He's always in a wheelchair, being pushed around. It doesn't seem like he's behind it. But last time, when we went to the underground cave to find something, I sent people to intercept him, but they failed. Now, Sunset City is heavily guarded, and mercenaries can't sneak in anymore."

"It shouldn't be him," Alfonso said. "My Gu is very deadly. He only has two or three months left. After that, he'll be bedridden, unable to even stand."

"I hope it's not him," Alistair sighed. "If it's not Larry, I can't figure out who is opposing me."

"You need to investigate," Alfonso said indifferently, "I'm leaving now."

He stood up and left.

Meanwhile, the scarred man returned to the research facility. He began investigating the stolen data. After a day of searching, he found some clues. The data theft involved multiple people who had infiltrated the facility long ago. However, he couldn't identify them.

In the research base office, the scarred man sat in a chair, stroking his chin in thought.

"Sir, these photos just came in," a subordinate said, handing him some pictures.

The scarred man took the photos. They showed Larry and Alden meeting.

"Word is, this morning, Larry met this guy at the Lewis Villa. Then they went to the underground parking lot. Shortly after, Larry came out alone."

The scarred man examined the photos. Alden wore a hat and kept his head down, so his face wasn't visible.

The scarred man tapped his fingers on the desk. He oversaw the research facility and had people watching Larry, reporting his movements daily to Alistair.

"This doesn't seem unusual," he murmured. Then he asked, "Did the woman pushing Larry show any signs of abnormal behavior?"

"She went out this morning for about three hours. Our people were watching Larry and didn't follow her. She came back with groceries, probably just went shopping," the subordinate replied.

"Three hours to buy groceries?" the scarred man muttered. "From now on, keep an eye on the woman pushing Larry. Track her movements."

"Sir, are you still suspicious of Larry?"

"It's not me; it's the boss. Get to it."

"Yes, sir."

Today, Larry stayed in his room, even having his meals brought up by Trinity. In the evening, Chloe returned home. Her injuries hadn't fully healed, and after a busy day at the office, she was exhausted.

She went upstairs and saw Larry meditating on the bed. While changing clothes, she asked, "Honey, what are you doing?"

Larry opened his eyes slightly. Chloe took off her business suit and changed into comfortable clothes.

"I'm meditating. As long as I stay still, my body doesn't feel as bad," Larry said.

Chloe sat on the bed, holding Larry's hand with a look of concern. "Honey, you'll be okay. I believe you'll get better."

Larry shook his head slightly. "I won't get better. I can feel it. I only have a few months left. Chloe, you should start planning for your future. Don't let me hold you back."

Chloe's face hardened. "Honey, what are you talking about? From the moment I saved you ten years ago, our lives have been intertwined. I was wrong before, but I swear I'll never abandon you again."

She climbed onto the bed and sat down. "Lean on my lap. I'll massage your head."

Chloe remembered Abigail saying Larry often had headaches and needed regular head massages to relieve the pain.

"No, it's okay. My head doesn't hurt right now."

"Honey, are you rejecting me? Why do you let Abigail massage you but refuse me? I'm your wife, the woman who shares your bed."

Larry didn't argue further. He didn't want to fight with Chloe or make her overthink. He leaned back, resting his head on Chloe's lap. Chloe gently massaged his head.

There was a knock on the door.

"Larry, Chloe, dinner's ready."

Larry got up from Chloe's lap. "Let's go eat."

"Okay," Chloe said, helping him up.

Larry didn't refuse. With Chloe's support, he walked out of the room. Outside stood a young, vibrant girl in casual clothes and an apron, her long hair tied in a ponytail, revealing her clean forehead. She smiled, showing two dimples.

"Larry, Chloe."

Chloe nodded lightly.

Larry said, "Thanks for cooking again. It's hard work."

Trinity smiled. "It's not hard. I'm getting paid, so I can't just do nothing."

Larry didn't say more. They went downstairs to eat. Maria was out, and Scott wasn't home. Sam and Mindy were also nowhere to be found. It was just the three of them.

After dinner, Chloe went upstairs to organize company documents. Trinity cleaned up the dining room and went to the kitchen to wash dishes. Larry walked into the kitchen.

Trinity saw Larry and smiled. "Larry, I'll be done soon. After that, I'm heading out. I contacted Dr. Rogers at noon, and he asked me to come tonight. He said the results would be ready."

"Okay," Larry nodded. "Be careful. If you run into any trouble, call me right away."
