Chapter 262 The Last Resort for Survival
Chloe was all pumped to see the Execution Sword, the big symbol of law in the Summer Nation, giving its holder the power to judge.
Only Larry could wield it, and even though he quit, no one had taken it back.
“What’s that?” Chloe asked, eyeing the sword in Lyra’s hand.
“Nothing,” Lyra quickly replied, hiding the sword in a black cloth.
She knew she couldn’t use this sword to save Larry.
She had learned enough to understand what this sword stood for. It symbolized the law and could judge those who dodged legal punishment or those the law couldn’t touch.
This sword was a big deal.
When the Summer Nation was founded, many generals wanted to get rid of it.
But the top leader decided to keep it.
Lyra knew using this sword to save Larry would mess with its authority. If word got out, it would be a huge problem.
Lyra said, “Don’t worry, I’ll find a way to save Larry. You head back. I need to go out.”
Only Free could save Larry now.
She drove to the military district but got stopped at the gate.
She had to call Frank to explain.
Frank was already awake.
When he heard the police had arrested Larry, he relaxed, thinking it was no big deal.
He said casually, “It’s fine. Even though Larry resigned, he was a Black Dragon and did great things for the country. Plus, Larry has the Execution Sword, which can get him out of some legal trouble. This sword is an award from the top leader of the Summer Nation, recognizing his achievements.”
“Frank, this sword stands for the supreme law of the Summer Nation. It's for judging criminals, not for self-rescue. Larry is in danger, with many important people watching him. If he uses the sword, it will backfire,” Lyra explained.
“Let Free help. I’m at the military district gate but got stopped.”
Frank thought for a moment and agreed Lyra had a point. Better to be careful in critical times.
He called Free.
Free quickly invited Lyra into the military district after hearing the situation.
In Free’s office, Lyra laid it all out.
Free looked serious and said, “Yeah, using the Execution Sword now is a bad idea. This sword is too special. If used for self-rescue, it will definitely backfire. If the people of Aurora Citadel petition together, demanding the leader to reclaim the sword, Larry will lose his last means of protection.”
“Free, you have to save Larry.”
Free waved his hand slightly and said, “Alright, you go back first.”
“Okay,” Lyra said, turning to leave.
Free then ordered his men to find out what crime Larry had committed to get arrested.
He quickly got the details.
Since he couldn’t help directly, he sent Howard to the hospital to meet with the Carter family and the Martinez family.
Howard, after getting the order, changed into civilian clothes and headed to the hospital.
In a ward, Callahan lay dying on the bed.
He was only forty-five, but now he looked very old. Overnight, his hair had turned grey, and the Carter family members were all anxious.
Someone came in and said, “Mr. Carter, Howard is here to see you.”
“Let him in,” Callahan said weakly.
Howard walked in, took one look at Callahan on the bed, and got straight to the point. “So, you got Larry arrested. Do you really think that video alone will nail him? You know who he is. This will just cause him some hassle. My advice? Drop it.”
“Larry hurt the Carter family. How can we just let it slide?” Callahan said weakly, his face twisted with anger.
Howard stayed calm. “Are you really willing to risk your life to see Larry behind bars? Larry’s medical skills are unmatched. If he doesn’t help, no one can save you. You don’t have many days left. Think it over. If you back off, I can get Larry to spare you, and the Carter family will stop going after the Lewis family.”
Callahan fell silent, deep in thought.
Larry’s skills were indeed top-notch.
Modern medicine couldn’t fix his condition.
He wanted Larry gone, but he didn’t want to die himself.
“Out of respect for you, I’ll let Larry go. As long as he can cure me, I won’t target the Lewis family anymore.”
Howard left and then met with Caius, giving him the same spiel he had given Callahan.
Caius was also scared of dying.
After thinking it over, Caius decided not to go after Larry, as long as Larry could cure him.
Howard had sorted it out.
At the police station, in the detention room, Larry was still asleep.
Outside, footsteps approached, and the iron door creaked open.
“Larry.” Howard walked in.
Larry woke up and got off the wooden bed. Seeing Howard, he frowned. “What are you doing here?”
Howard smiled. “Free knows about this. He thinks the Execution Sword is your last line of defense. Sure, it can pardon any crime, but once you use it, people will make a big fuss and demand it be taken back.”
Larry yawned, craving a cigarette. “Got a smoke?”
Howard quickly pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and handed it to Larry.
Howard continued, “I’ve already talked to the Carter family and the Martinez family. They agreed not to hold you responsible for the injuries and promised not to target the Lewis family. You’re free to go. But can you cut them some slack?”
Larry took a drag, looking calm. “I don’t want to fight them either. They brought this on themselves. Since they won’t target the Lewis family anymore, I’ll let it go this time.”
“Larry, please.” Howard gestured for him to leave.
Larry got up and walked out.
Howard drove him to the hospital.
With a few silver needles, Larry restored Callahan and Caius’s vitality.
After saving them, he said calmly, “Let’s be clear. If you have any issues, come to me. Don’t mess with my wife or the Lewis family. Timothy and Justin are examples. Next time, I won’t be so forgiving.”
Larry turned and left. Howard drove him home from the hospital.
At the Lewis home, Chloe was pacing anxiously when there was a knock on the door.
She quickly opened it and saw Larry. She threw herself into his arms, crying. “Honey, you’re back. That’s great, that’s great.”
Larry hugged her and smiled. “I told you, it’s fine. By the way, today’s the start of the medical conference. Medical Street is packed with top doctors from all over. Let’s go check it out and reclaim the title of the world’s best doctor.”
“Larry, you useless man, what did you do yesterday?” came Maria’s scolding voice from inside.
