Chapter 203 The Crisis of the Lewis Family
Chloe was totally floored.
She couldn't wrap her head around the fact that Sam had taken out $800 million in high-interest loans.
Daniel, who used to be a small-time boss, had bailed with his crew.
Lately, some big shots in Sunset City had been retiring left and right, not giving a damn about anything.
With heavyweights like Lord and Nine-Fingered stepping down, Alexander saw his chance to rise.
Now, his high-interest loans, underground casinos, entertainment joints, and other businesses were booming.
One of his guys asked, "Alexander, why not just nab Sam? Once we get him, we can make the Lewis family cough up the cash."
Alexander cracked up. "Just paying up? It's not that simple."
Curious, they asked, "Alexander, what's on your mind?"
With a smug grin, Alexander said, "I know the Lewis family's background. The scariest one is Black Dragon, who backs Chloe. But Black Dragon's retired and isn't the commander of Southwild anymore. Plus, I've heard a lot of big shots want Black Dragon dead."
He paused for a moment.
"Now the internet's buzzing that Black Dragon's shown up in Southwild. This has to be a trap set by some big shot. And now there's news that Black Dragon died in a battle at Cedar Grove on the Southwild border."
"Without backup, we can mess with Chloe all we want."
"I want that beauty in my bed, and I want the Lewis Family to go broke."
"Alexander, you're a genius." Alexander laughed out loud.
At the Lewis family's place, Sam was lying on the ground, beaten and bleeding, crying out in pain.
Chloe walked over and yelled, "Sam, what the hell did you do?"
Sam started bawling, really pitifully.
At that moment, he didn't want to live anymore.
He got up and rushed to the window, ready to jump out.
Chloe pulled him back just in time and scolded, "Does that solve anything? Calm down."
"Just let me die. It'll all be over if I die." Chloe slapped him, snapping him out of it. Sam sat on the sofa, crying non-stop.
Chloe was fuming and asked, "What exactly happened?"
"Chloe, I messed up. I really messed up. I regret it so much." Sam kept crying.
"I teamed up with Mindy to transfer $500 million from your account. I went to the underground casino to gamble, but I got hooked and lost everything. Then I borrowed $800 million in high-interest loans."
"Chloe, I swear I didn't know. I really didn't.I just wanted to win the money back with my foggy mind." Sam spilled the beans.
Hearing this, Chloe was so mad she almost passed out. She pointed at Sam, her chest heaving, breathing heavily.
"Chloe, you have money. Help me pay it back. I really don't want to die. Now I'm about to be a father since Mindy is pregnant. I don't want my kid to be born without a dad."
Sam kept crying. This was a huge mess. He lost $500 million and borrowed $800 million in high-interest loans.
Chloe had no idea what to do. After a moment of distraction, she took out her phone and called Maria.
"Mom, come back quick. Something happened." Then she called Mindy, who had gone back home. "Mindy, get back here right now." Soon, the whole family was back.
When they found out Sam had stolen $500 million and borrowed $800 million in high-interest loans, Maria fainted on the spot.
Scott was also freaked out, splashing cold water on Maria's face, shaking her continuously.
Maria slowly came to.
As soon as she woke up, she grabbed a broom and started whacking Sam furiously.
"You idiot, why did you gamble? I'll beat you to death."
"Mom, please stop." Mindy kept pleading.
She knelt on the ground, begging, "Chloe still has $1.5 billion in her account. Let her take out the money to pay off the high-interest loans. Sam's about to be a father since I'm pregnant. The kid can't be without a dad."
Chloe was beyond pissed. Sam stole $500 million from her and now wants her to take out over a billion dollars to pay off the debt?
No way in hell. That cash was her lifeline for starting over.
"Yeah, Mom, after all, Chloe's money was handed to her, not earned. You can't just let them kill me, right?" Sam chimed in.
"I'll beat you to death," Maria fumed.
"Chloe, you only have one brother."
"Chloe, I'm begging you, save Sam. He's sorry and won't dare to do it again."
The two knelt on the ground, pleading for mercy. After a while, Maria looked at Chloe.
"Chloe, you have money in your account, right? Why not use it to pay off the debt? Money can be earned again, but if Sam dies, it's over."
"Mom..." Chloe felt helpless. This wasn't pocket change, but over a billion dollars. "Mom, high-interest loans are illegal. Let's call the cops."
"Chloe, no..." Sam crawled towards Chloe, kowtowing, "Alexander's got a lot of guys. He'll retaliate if we call the cops."
"But $800 million in principal and $600 million in interest is insane."
It's not that Chloe's unwilling. She just doesn't want to pay for Sam's screw-up.
"Call the cops. I don't believe they can go against the law."
Chloe said firmly. Sam knew Alexander's background. He's a real big shot.
Calling the cops would be useless. Once the police are involved, the Lewis Family would face terrifying retaliation.
"Chloe, please don't call the cops."
Chloe didn't listen; this had to be reported. She made the call.
Sam looked dejected, muttering, "It's over, this time it's really over."
Maria didn't say anything either; she thought calling the cops was a good idea.
And Scott, he had no clue what to do, so he just sat aside, smoking.
Soon, the police arrived. After asking a few questions, they said they'd handle it. With some perfunctory remarks, they left.
Meanwhile, Alexander was with a big shot from the police department at a club.
"Atticus Fairchild, once this is settled, there'll be benefits for you."
Atticus said, "Alexander, don't push it. Free is managing Sunset City."
"No worries."
Alexander said casually, "I've already found out that Black Dragon, who backs Chloe, has pissed off many big shots. These guys can't wait to kill Black Dragon. Now that I'm targeting the Lewis Family, they won't care too much."
Alexander had a knack for seizing opportunities, which let him rise quickly after many big shots retired, becoming a new power in Sunset City.
Back at the Lewis family's place, the whole family gathered.
Sam looked utterly hopeless, "See, I told you. The cops came, took some notes, and left. Now Alexander must already know. We'll face his crazy retaliation."
Hearing this, Maria was also scared.
She pulled Chloe and pleaded, "Chloe, don't provoke someone ruthless like him. You have money in your account. Let's use it and end this."
Sam chimed in, "Yeah, Chloe, I'm begging you. It's still not too late if you pay now."
Chloe stood up and scolded, "Sam, you caused this mess. Why should I be responsible?"
"Mom..." Sam immediately started crying. Then he moved to open the window to jump out. "It's all my fault. I'll just die."
Mindy pulled him back in time.
Maria knew it was Sam's fault, but he was her only son. There was no use in saying anything to solve the situation.
She stood up and scolded, "Chloe, your money was given to you for free. What's wrong with using it to save Sam? Can you really bear to see Sam jump from the eighth floor?"
"Do I have to jump for you to take out the money?"
Saying this, Maria also tried to jump out the window. Scott pulled her back in time. Turning to Chloe, he said, "Chloe, they're big shots, we can't mess with them. Let's use the money to solve this."
The whole family was pressuring Chloe to take out the money.
Chloe was so upset that she cried, tearfully saying, "Fine, I'll take out the money, okay?"
