Chapter 223 Why Are You the One Marrying Me
Larry headed back.
Meanwhile, over on Food Street in NextGen City, in a cozy little room of a new restaurant, Abigail looked at Chloe and asked, "Chloe, what the heck went down last night? How did Timothy end up dead, and why's Justin in the hospital, still out cold? I heard he's all busted up and can't have kids anymore."
Chloe blinked, surprised. "Seriously? Where'd you hear that? Is it for real?"
"Totally. Got it straight from someone in the Carter Family."
"I have no clue."
Chloe was confused. She knew Larry had roughed up Justin during the day, but the night’s events were a mystery to her.
All she knew was Larry reported it, the military stepped in, and Timothy got himself shot resisting arrest.
"Chloe, don't BS me. I heard the Carter Family tried to snatch you and Sam, and even the military got involved."
"Abigail, I swear, I don't know. I did get kidnapped, but Larry reported it, the military showed up, and I have no idea what happened after that."
"Your hubby Larry?"
"Yeah." Chloe nodded.
Abigail looked skeptical, "He's a nobody. How'd he get the military on speed dial? And why would Free bother with something so small?"
Chloe shook her head, "I have no idea."
Not wanting to linger on the topic, she switched gears, "By the way, there's a rumor that Black Dragon is dead. Is that true?"
Abigail's face went pale at that.
The Chairman of The Serpent Group, Larry, aka Black Dragon, was her ex. She never really got over him.
She sighed, "Maybe it’s just fate. We were never meant to be."
"Abigail, I'm sorry. There's nothing between me and him, not like the rumors say. I never slept with him."
"Really?"
Even Abigail doubted Chloe's words. As a woman, she trusted her gut.
Not long ago, she saw Larry at the Serpent Group's entrance. The way he looked at Chloe was pure love.
"Forget it. He's gone now. Let's not dwell on sad stuff. Don't let a guy mess up our friendship. May the dead rest in peace, and the living keep on living. By the way, there's a high school reunion tonight. Let's go together. It's been ages since we caught up with everyone."
"No." Chloe shook her head slightly.
So much had happened lately, and the Lewis Family was on the brink of bankruptcy. She wasn't in the mood for a reunion.
"I pulled some strings to get Xavier to perform. I also got Larry's old classmates together. After the reunion, we'll head to the suburbs to set up a memorial for him, to remember him."
Chloe was touched. Xavier was her idol, and she loved his music.
How could a memorial for Black Dragon Larry be complete without her?
Recently, Black Dragon Larry had helped her a lot. After thinking for a moment, she nodded lightly, "Okay."
Abigail said, "The reunion's at Maple Grove Mansion. After tonight, we'll crash there, and tomorrow we'll set up a memorial for Larry."
She looked a bit embarrassed.
She corrected herself, "I mean Black Dragon Larry, not your useless husband Larry."
Chloe just smiled and didn't take it to heart. She asked, "By the way, can I bring a guest?"
Abigail frowned slightly. Technically, guests were allowed at the reunion. She didn't want Chloe to bring Larry.
She had a good boyfriend lined up for Chloe among their classmates. He wasn't Justin, but he was way better than useless Larry.
After thinking for a moment, she said, "If you want to bring someone, go ahead."
"Thanks." Chloe said with a smile.
After making plans with Abigail, she went home. Larry was already back.
"Honey, I need to tell you something."
"Okay, shoot."
Chloe said, "Abigail organized a high school reunion, and I plan to go."
"Then go."
"And also..."
"Just spit it out."
Chloe said, "We'll be staying at Maple Grove Mansion for the night. Tomorrow, we will set up a tombstone for Black Dragon in the suburbs, to commemorate him."
Larry was drinking water. Hearing this, he couldn't help but spit it out, laughing.
"Set up a memorial for Black Dragon? Whose bright idea was that?"
"It was Abigail," Chloe said, a bit embarrassed. She was worried Larry might get mad, so she quickly added, "Because Black Dragon was Abigail's boyfriend ten years ago."
Larry stroked his chin. He wasn't even dead yet. He didn't dig too deep into it.
"Alright, you go ahead."
"I plan to take you with me."
"That's cool," Larry nodded. It wasn't safe for beautiful Chloe to go out alone. He felt better tagging along.
They had lunch at home, chilled for a bit, and then headed out.
Larry drove Sam's car since their Maserati and limited edition Ferrari had been seized by the court and were up for auction.
Once in the car, Chloe called Abigail to let her know they were on their way.
Abigail, who had set up the reunion, had left Chloe's place at noon and was already on her way to Maple Grove Mansion.
On the drive, Chloe said, "This time, besides our classmates, there'll be Larry's classmates too. Ten years ago, I was in Class 2, while Larry was in Class 1."
Once Chloe started reminiscing about ten years ago, she couldn't stop.
"Back then, Abigail was the hottest girl in school, and Larry was the most handsome guy. Why are you laughing? I'm talking about The Serpent Group's Larry, Black Dragon Larry, not you."
"No, I'm not laughing. Go on."
Larry held back his laughter.
Chloe continued, "Abigail dated Larry without telling me. If she hadn't come back this time, I wouldn't have known. And I never expected that Abigail's boyfriend was Black Dragon, the one who's been secretly helping me."
She glanced at Larry.
"You knew all along that Black Dragon was secretly helping me, didn't you?"
Larry touched his nose and didn't deny it.
"When I was captured by Frederick, Black Dragon saved me and then notified you, right?"
Chloe's face showed a hint of complaint as she scolded, "Why didn't you tell me earlier?"
Larry smiled and didn't say much.
"By the way, you were also a general in Southwild and worked with Black Dragon. Can you tell me his story?"
Larry looked helpless. How could he tell his own story?
"What do you want to know?"
Chloe thought for a moment and said, "It was said that he was very strong and skilled in medicine. You can talk about these two aspects."
Larry didn't have much to say. Chloe was curious, so he had to say something.
"People only know that Black Dragon is very strong, but they don't know how much he suffered because of it. Do you know that when other soldiers were resting, he was carrying heavy supplies and running cross-country in the mountains?"
"The daily training for the Black Dragon Army was five hours, but Black Dragon trained for fifteen hours."
"He carried a burden of hatred and wanted revenge."
"He felt guilty towards a girl. This girl pulled him out of the fire, but he ignored her safety and jumped into the river himself. For the past ten years, he has been filled with remorse and wanted to make amends."
Chloe knew that the girl Larry was talking about was her. She hadn't expected Black Dragon to have so many stories.
Larry continued, "Black Dragon fought on the battlefield, hoping to return with glory. He wanted to seek revenge, and repay his debts, making up for what he owed that girl."
As he spoke, Larry's nose couldn't help but tingle. Thinking back on his experiences over the years, he felt a desire to cry.
Chloe was puzzled.
"You were Black Dragon's subordinate, and he told you everything. Why didn't he marry me instead of you?"
After saying that, she regretted it and quickly explained, "Honey, I didn't mean anything by it. I was just saying it casually. Don't take it to heart."
Larry smiled and said, "I married you purely by coincidence. I happened to be demoted and returned to Sunset City, where I learned that the Lewis Family needed a son-in-law. When I found out it was you, I remembered what the commander had told me about the girl who saved him. The commander treated me well and always wanted to make amends. I couldn't bear to see you suffer."
"So, you married into the Lewis Family and endured hardships there just to repay Black Dragon's kindness?"
Chloe understood why Black Dragon Larry knew she was married but didn't force her. It was because her husband Larry was his subordinate, and he didn't want to interfere.
Larry smiled and didn't say much. He let Chloe think whatever she wanted.
Once the current troubles were resolved and Summer Nation was completely stable, he would reveal everything.
Then he would truly retire, having a world-renowned wedding with Chloe.
