Chapter 276 A High-Stakes Gamble

Cason knew saving Alden was gonna be a real challenge. Even though Alistair was on board, Cason didn't trust him one bit.

In Sunset City, part of the Summer Nation, Alistair had all the military power. If he surrounded this place, there was no escape. Not only would Alden remain captive, but he would also meet his end there.

Larry was his only card to play. Instead of threatening Alistair, Cason figured teaming up with Larry was the smarter move.

Larry, puffing on a cigarette and deep in thought, didn't know Alden but was well aware of the Shadow Syndicate's bloody reputation. Cason wasn't exactly a saint either.

But hadn't Larry brought Cason here to recruit some top-notch talent?

"So, what kind of deal are you thinking?" Larry asked, eyeing Cason.

Cason replied, "I know you've got a special connection with Free. Right now, Sunset City is on lockdown by Free, and we can't get out. I need you to call Free and, if necessary, let me go. I promise, once Alden is safe, the whole Shadow Syndicate will be at your service."

Larry gave a faint smile and said, "You really think I'd team up with you?"

He stood up, pulling Abigail along, and started to leave.

As soon as they stepped out of the underground chamber, they were met with dozens of guns aimed right at them.

"Let him go," Cason shouted.

"Okay."

The men immediately lowered their guns.

Larry walked out of the underground chamber.

Outside, assassins from the hit list were waiting.

They were all waiting for dawn.

Once dawn broke, they'd find a way to leave. With a billion dollars in their pockets, they could finally retire and live normal lives.

As Larry approached, all the assassins stood up, looking wary.

Cason walked over.

One assassin asked, "Cason, what's going on?"

Cason said calmly, "Nothing. Let him go."

Larry ignored them and kept walking, pulling Abigail with him.

But Abigail's leg was numb, and after a few steps, she winced in pain.

Larry couldn't help but ask, "What's wrong?"

"My leg's numb. It hurts."

Larry glanced at her long, fair legs, squatted down, and asked, "Which leg?"

"This one," Abigail pointed to her right leg.

Larry reached out and gently massaged her calf.

"How's that?"

"Much better."

Larry stood up and pulled Abigail along.

The top assassins were all there, but none of them made a move. They just watched as Larry and Abigail left.

The village was full of armed villagers.

The place was heavily guarded, but Larry walked out with ease.

After getting some distance from the village, Larry stopped.

He sat on a rock, lost in thought.

"Larry, why'd you stop?" Abigail frowned and asked, "You don't really plan to team up with those crazies, do you?"

After a long pause, Larry took a deep breath and said, "You don't get my situation. You head back to Sunset City. I'll see how things play out."

After thinking it over, Larry decided to take a gamble.

Taking control of the powerhouse that was the Shadow Syndicate, with its top-tier experts, would be a huge boost for his future plans.

"I'm not leaving," Abigail pouted like a kid throwing a tantrum. "If you’re staying, I’m staying."

Larry glanced at her and scolded, "Do you even know what kind of place this is? Do you know who these people are? They're all assassins. It's super dangerous for you here, and you'll just get in my way. Go back now."

Abigail was taken aback by his yelling.

Tears started to well up in her eyes.

Larry softened a bit and said, "Wait for me then."

He turned and headed back to the village.

He got there pretty quickly.

"I knew you'd come around," Cason said, ready to give Larry a hug.

"Get lost," Larry snapped, kicking out at him.

But his leg was still messed up, and the kick hurt him more than it hurt Cason.

Cason stepped back, dodging the kick.

"Get me a car," Larry demanded.

Cason casually tossed him a set of keys. "The car's at the village entrance."

Larry grabbed the keys and left.

When he got back, Abigail was already at the village entrance, looking nervous with all the armed guards around. She was pacing back and forth, clearly worried.

"Larry!" she called out, her face lighting up as she ran towards him, trying to hug him.

Larry quickly put his hand out to stop her, but accidentally touched her chest.

Abigail blushed instantly.

Larry looked embarrassed, quickly pulled his hand back, and handed her the car keys with an awkward smile. "You drive back first."

Abigail, still blushing, asked, "What about you?"

"I've got important stuff to handle. When you get back, check on Chloe. She might be scared. Comfort her, but don't tell her about this," Larry said.

Abigail bit her lip, thought for a moment, and nodded. "Okay."

She pressed the car key, and one of the cars at the village entrance lit up. She walked over, got in, and rolled down the window. "Be careful," she reminded him before driving off.

After watching her leave, Larry went back to the village.

Inside a small, rundown house, Larry sat on a worn-out sofa.

Cason was sitting across from him.

"So, what exactly do you need me to do?" Larry asked, trying to sound casual.

Cason explained, "Alistair promised to bring Alden here before dawn, and he'll come alone. He'll also have a helicopter ready for me to leave. In exchange, I'll hand you over to him. But I don't trust Alistair. I need your help to make sure I get out safely."

Cason snapped his fingers, and the door opened. A man walked in.

"I've already found a stand-in for you," Cason said, pointing at the man. "You just need to make a human skin mask that looks like you. Then you hide, and I'll hand this guy over to Alistair."

Cason paused and continued, "If I can leave with Alden smoothly, great. If we run into trouble, I'll need your help. Don't worry, I keep my promises. If I get out safely, the Shadow Syndicate is yours to lead."

"What about those guys outside?" Larry asked, glancing out the window.

A shadow crossed Cason's face. "Their mission is done. They can leave at dawn. Whether they make it out or not is up to them."

Larry got it.

The assassins outside were on their own now.

Whether they survived or not was up to chance.

"Alright, I'm in," Larry agreed without hesitation.

This was a gamble.

If he won, he'd control the entire Shadow Syndicate, with a bunch of top-tier assassins at his command.

If he lost, he'd have let a powerful enemy slip away.

But it was a risk worth taking.
