Chapter 307 Abigail's Melancholy
"Forget it."
Larry promptly refused.
He didn't dare to get involved with Abigail.
She was an enchanting woman, and getting too close would mean falling for her.
"Why? Are you afraid of falling in love with me?" Abigail asked with a playful smile.
"Sort of," Larry didn't deny it and said, "Besides, I have a wife. Being with you is disrespectful to you, to Chloe, and to myself."
"I don't care, and if you don't say anything, I won't either. Chloe wouldn't know."
Larry shook his head vigorously.
He knew Abigail was teasing him again.
She might even tell Chloe.
Although Abigail was smiling, a hint of disappointment flashed in her eyes.
She wished they could continue like this, but Larry was different from other men.
He was a national hero; he had boundaries; he wouldn't act recklessly, and he wouldn't like multiple women at the same time.
The more he was like this, the more she was infatuated with Larry.
"Abigail, can you give me some advice? What should I do now?"
Abigail touched her chin, deep in thought. After a few seconds, she said, "You should confess first."
"How exactly should I do that?"
"It's simple, buy some flowers, light candles under Chloe's apartment, just be as romantic as possible."
"Okay, thank you."
With Abigail's advice, Larry knew what to do.
"What are we doing? Today, you're my boyfriend. No more Chloe today; today, you belong to me."
Abigail felt envious.
Larry gave an awkward smile.
He spent the whole day with Abigail.
They acted like a real couple, shopping together, eating together, and even going to an amusement park.
Abigail was full of laughter and joy the whole day.
After dinner, they walked hand in hand down the street.
"Alright."
Abigail suddenly let go of Larry's hand and said, "You've had the privilege of my company all day. Now, where are you going? Back to the Lewis family, or to the repair shop you mentioned?"
"The repair shop."
"Okay, I'll drive you there."
Abigail drove Larry to the repair shop in the suburbs.
When they arrived, Abigail waved goodbye to Larry, "Bye-bye."
Larry nodded slightly, then opened the door and got out of the car.
Abigail sat in the car, watching Larry leave. Her eyes became moist, and tears started to fall uncontrollably.
She leaned on the steering wheel, sobbing softly.
A knocking sound came from the window.
Abigail immediately looked up, wiped her tears, rolled down the window, and smiled at Larry who was standing by the car door, "What? Do you have something else to say?"
Seeing her red eyes, Larry couldn't help but ask, "Why are you crying?"
"I'm not."
"Okay."
Larry gave her a strange look and said, "Nothing. Just be careful on your way back, stay safe, and call me if you need anything."
"Got it. You are such a nag for a grown man. I'm leaving."
Abigail started the car and drove away.
Larry stood by, watching Abigail leave.
He didn't turn to enter the repair shop until her car disappeared from sight.
"Larry."
A man in mechanic's overalls approached.
Larry nodded slightly and walked straight into the repair shop. He opened a hidden door, and entered the underground chamber.
This underground chamber used to be an illegal casino, but after Larry took over, he shut it down. Now, it was just the headquarter of the underground intelligence department.
"Larry."
As he walked, people greeted him continuously.
Larry responded to each one of them.
He entered a secret chamber and removed the human skin mask from his face.
Valerian arrived shortly after.
"Larry, you could have just called. Why did you come in person?"
"I have nowhere else to go, so I just came to check things out." Larry's face showed helplessness. He couldn't go back to the Lewis family, and Frank was in the military hospital. He didn't know where else to go, so he came to the intelligence headquarter.
Valerian took out a cigarette and handed it to him.
Larry accepted it.
"Any news from Cormac?"
Cormac and his people had put in so much effort; it couldn't be just to undermine medical skills. They must have other schemes.
But what exactly it was, Larry hadn't figured out yet.
Valerian shook his head and said, "Our people have been keeping an eye on Cormac. Since he left yesterday, he hasn't shown up again."
Larry asked, "Did you find out what they're planning?"
Upon hearing this, Valerian's expression turned serious.
Larry glanced at him and said, "Just say it."
Valerian said, "We did find something. According to the intelligence, Silvermoon Apothecary established a research institute in a neighboring city three months ago. It's very secretive, located in a mountain and heavily guarded by a well-trained military force. Our intelligence network couldn't penetrate it, so we don't know what they're researching."
"A secret research institute?"
Larry squinted his eyes.
If this research institute was related to the medical conference, it meant they had been planning this since the day he applied for resignation and came to Sunset City.
"Is it the Legion of Flame Surge?"
Valerian shook his head, "Not sure if it's the Legion of Flame Surge."
"Keep a close watch on that research base, Silvermoon Apothecary, Cormac, and Alistair. Report any unusual activity to me immediately."
"Copy that."
"Any news from Timeless Treasures Antiques?"
Valerian shook his head. "Everything is normal; there is no news. There were rumors that treasures from Victor Veil's Tomb of Southwild showed up at Timeless Treasures Antiques, but it's just hearsay. Nothing has been confirmed."
"Keep an eye on it."
"Understood."
"Go call those assassins to see me."
"Right away."
Valerian turned and left.
Soon, the assassins Larry had previously recruited appeared in the secret room.
"Larry."
The assassins spoke in unison.
Larry looked at them and instructed, "Your identities have been arranged. Starting tomorrow, protect Chloe 24/7. If anything happens to her, even if she lost a single hair, you'll be dead."
"Larry, all of us just to protect one person?"
Larry's face turned cold, "What? Is that a problem?"
"Larry, we're renowned assassins, and you're asking us to protect a woman? Isn't that a bit too much?"
Larry took a deep breath and said, "Chloe is everything to me. Her safety is more important than anything. Just do as I say, but make sure she doesn't notice your presence and don't disturb her life."
"Understood."
The assassins nodded reluctantly.
"Dismissed. You can leave now. Rotate shifts among yourselves for the protection."
"Got it."
The group nodded and turned to leave.
Larry leaned back on the sofa, lost in thought.
As he thought, he grew drowsy.
There were bedrooms in the underground chamber.
Larry went straight to one of them to rest.
In a daze, he heard noises.
He reached for his phone by the bed, checked the time, and saw it was only 3 AM. He got up, rubbed his head, and walked out.
Outside, security was tight.
The place was filled with fully armed Black Dragon Army members.
Larry grabbed one randomly and asked, "What's going on?"
"Larry, there's a mole in the organization. Valerian is conducting a thorough investigation and has detained all former Grim Reaper members for interrogation."
"A mole?"
Larry was stunned and asked, "How did a mole infiltrate? Is it from the police or the military?"
The Black Dragon Army member shook his head, "I don't know."
Larry turned and headed towards the dungeon of the underground chamber.
The underground chamber was vast, like an underground city, which cost the Grim Reaper decades to build it.
Over thirty people were tied up in the dungeon.
Some were beaten badly.
"If you want to avoid suffering, confess now."
As Larry approached, he heard Valerian's stern voice.
"What's going on?"
Hearing Larry's voice, Valerian immediately stood up, turned around, and said, "Larry, did we wake you?"
