Chapter 137 Finally Meeting
In the swanky top-floor office of the Serpent Group, Larry had just slipped into a suit worth a fortune. Sarah was fixing his tie.
Once dressed, Larry's whole vibe changed. He went from looking like an average guy to someone who screamed success.
"Mr. Bennett," Sarah said, puzzled, after adjusting his tie. "Why do you hide who you are?"
Larry just smiled without answering. He wasn't sure himself—maybe he just wanted to live a normal life for a bit.
Just then, William walked in. "Mr. Bennett, Chloe's here, and she's brought someone named Abigail. Abigail's applying for the VP spot and wants to see you too."
"Abigail?" Larry was surprised. A memory flashed in his mind.
Ten years ago, fresh out of high school, he had dated a girl named Abigail for about six months. Teenage love—awkward but unforgettable.
Shaking his head, Larry muttered, "No way, it can't be her."
William asked, "Should I let them in together or one at a time?"
Larry thought for a second before answering, "Let Chloe in first."
"Got it," William said, leaving the office with Sarah following behind.
In the lounge outside, William approached Chloe with a smile. "Ms. Lewis, the chairman will see you now."
Chloe’s heart raced as she thought, 'Am I finally going to meet him?'
Abigail frowned. "What about me?"
William replied, "Ms. Martinez, the chairman didn't call for you. You're here for the VP interview, right? Follow me."
Abigail wanted to see if the chairman was her first love. "I want to see the chairman."
"Ms. Martinez, the chairman only asked to see Ms. Lewis. If you pass the interview, you'll get to see him," William said, then turned to Sarah. "Sarah, please escort Ms. Lewis to Mr. Bennett’s office."
"Sure," Sarah said, momentarily stunned by Chloe's beauty. "This way, please."
Chloe took a deep breath and followed Sarah into the chairman's office.
In the spacious office, a tall man in a white suit stood by the glass wall, looking out at the city.
"Mr. Bennett, Ms. Lewis is here," Sarah announced.
Larry, still facing the window, raised his hand. "Got it, you can leave now."
"Okay," Sarah said, leaving the room.
Chloe stood there, looking at Larry. He was about six feet tall with a short haircut. She couldn't see his face but guessed he must be handsome. She felt a bit nervous.
Finally, Larry turned around, and Chloe’s anticipation turned to disappointment. He wore a silver mask that covered most of his face, leaving only his eyes, nose, mouth, and chin visible.
Seeing her nervousness, Larry smiled faintly. "Don't be nervous. Please, have a seat."
Chloe sat on the office sofa, and Larry took a seat across from her.
"Mr. Bennett, thanks for looking out for me," Chloe said, her voice shaky with nerves.
Larry dismissed her gratitude with a wave. "If it weren't for you, I would've died in that fire ten years ago. I know you've had a tough time since then, and what I've done can never fully make up for it."
He meant it. Chloe's kindness was something he could never fully repay.
Chloe looked up at Larry. The man in front of her, in a pristine white suit and silver mask, had an aura that was almost suffocating.
She wanted to say, "I already have a husband, please take back the gifts," but Larry's presence was too overwhelming. She found herself thinking, 'If only he were my husband.'
Shaking off the thought, she asked, "Can I see your face?"
"Does it matter?" Larry replied.
Chloe was taken aback by his response.
Larry continued, "I know you're here because of the gifts I sent to the Lewis Family. They're a token of gratitude for saving my life. Since you have a husband and don't plan to divorce, consider them a thank you. If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to ask."
As a son-in-law, Larry couldn't offer much to Chloe. But as a Bennett, the situation was different.
"That's too much," Chloe said quickly. "I can't accept such valuable gifts. Please take them back. I just want to see your face."
She really wanted to see the man who had been helping her all this time.
Seeing the anticipation in her eyes, Larry thought about revealing his face. But if he did, how would he interact with her in the future? She'd only have respect and awe, not love.
After a moment, he decided against it. "It's not the right time. When it is, you'll know what I look like. If there's nothing else, Miss Lewis, please leave. I have other matters to attend to."
Chloe looked disappointed. She had met him but still couldn't see his face.
Standing up, she said, "I'll have someone return the gifts."
"I said, no need," Larry replied firmly. "If you're not planning to divorce your husband, see them as a token of my gratitude."
"Thank you, then," Chloe said, turning to leave.
After she left, Larry sighed in relief, took off the mask, and looked helpless. "I just wanted to give a gift, but now I have to juggle two identities with Chloe."
