Chapter 269 Slaying the Dragon

Larry had this gut feeling that Sunset City was about to turn into a madhouse.

All sorts of players were gonna jump in.

"Lyra."

"Larry, what do you need?"

Larry drummed his fingers on the table, thinking for a bit before asking, "Can you get in touch with those Shadow Syndicate assassins?"

Lyra nodded slightly. "I can reach a few."

"Do it now. Tell them we need backup in Sunset City."

Larry needed some heavy hitters on his side.

The Shadow Syndicate assassins seemed like a solid pick.

"Got it," Lyra said.

She pulled out her phone and typed a message: [Cason, mission failed. Mask ripped, someone saw me. Took out the contact. Hiding in Sunset City. Hurt, need help to get out.]

She punched in a number and hit send.

Larry glanced at the message and asked, "Who's Cason?"

Lyra replied, "Top assassin in the Shadow Syndicate. One of their three elites and the Syndicate's number one. He's never failed a mission."

"What about recruiting him?"

Lyra hesitated.

From what she knew, Cason was a no-go.

He was fiercely loyal to the Syndicate. Besides being an assassin, he was also their second-in-command.

Larry looked at her. "What's the holdup?"

Lyra took a deep breath. "It's tough. Cason's not just a top assassin; he's the second-in-command. He runs the show, right under the mysterious leader."

Larry stared at her. "So why'd you message him? Aren't you worried about the Syndicate coming after you?"

Just as Lyra was about to answer, her phone beeped.

She checked it and saw a string of numbers.

Larry asked, "What does that mean?"

Lyra explained, "It's a code only Syndicate members get."

"What did Cason say?"

"Cason said rules are rules. If someone sees your face, you gotta die. He said I shouldn't have killed the contact. He'll find a way to come to Sunset City and help me escape safely."

Larry asked, "What's your deal with him?"

Lyra explained, "We're both orphans, bought by the Syndicate. Trained together since we were kids. Even though we're assassins, we've got a strong bond."

"Ask him when he can get here."

"Okay."

Lyra quickly sent another message.

This time, it was a bunch of mysterious symbols.

Larry couldn't crack the code, but he made a mental note to figure it out later.

Even though Lyra was with him now, her assassin past made him wary. If she wasn't truly loyal, bringing in more assassins could be a nightmare.

Soon, Cason replied.

Another string of numbers.

Lyra said, "Cason's tied up right now. He can't make it to Sunset City for another three days."

"Three days?"

Larry squinted.

That was the day of the big medical conference, and the timing was just too perfect.

"You know if Cason shows up in Sunset City and doesn't fall in line, he's a dead man. You've got a strong bond with him, and you're putting him at risk," Larry said to Lyra, sounding almost casual.

"I know," Lyra replied, her face serious. "I'll convince him. I think he's tired of that life and wants some peace."

"Alright," Larry nodded. "Take care of your injuries. Let me know if anything comes up."

With that, Larry stood up and left.

After leaving the Mortal Clinic, he called Valerian.

Soon enough, Valerian showed up.

In a black car, Larry was puffing on a cigarette.

"Larry." Valerian greeted.

Larry scribbled down a string of mysterious numbers and handed it to Valerian. "This is the Shadow Syndicate's code. Decode it and tell me what it means."

"Got it."

"And keep a close eye on Lyra. Let me know if she contacts anyone."

"Understood," Valerian nodded. "Anything else?"

"That's it. You can go."

Larry got out of the car, flagged down a cab, and headed back to the Lewis family.

Back at the Mortal Clinic, Lyra sat in a chair. Her assassin training made her good at spotting surveillance.

She knew she was being watched and couldn't move freely.

She felt trapped.

She knew Larry didn't trust her.

She couldn't blame him; she used to be an assassin.

Now, she had to convince Cason.

If she could bring Cason over, Larry might trust her, and her future would look brighter. If not, she was screwed.

Three days felt like forever.

She couldn't wait.

She sent another message to Cason: [Job to kill Black Dragon failed. He unmasked me. Contact shot at me when I asked for help. I killed him, but now I'm hurt. Black Dragon is hunting me. Can't hold on. Can you come sooner?]

Lyra was willing to do anything to lure Cason.

She believed Cason would come.

If Cason were in trouble, she'd go to save him, no matter what.

In a village in Sindora, one of the twenty-eight small countries on the Southwild Border, a man with a snake tattoo on his face smirked at a text message. He was Cason, the second-in-command of the Shadow Syndicate and one of the top three assassins in the world.

"Kieran."

"Yeah?"

Kieran walked over.

Cason instructed, "Tell the top ten assassins to head to Summer Nation and get to Sunset City ASAP."

Kieran was stunned. "What's going on?"

Cason stood up, stretched, and grinned wickedly. "We're gonna kill some people."

Kieran got it. "I'll contact them right away."

"Spread the word. This is a Shadow Syndicate bounty. Whether they succeed or fail, just showing up gets them ten billion dollars."

"Understood."

Kieran quickly went to make the arrangements.

Cason's grin turned even more sinister. "Lyra, did you really think I didn't know you joined Black Dragon? Trying to set me up? Fine, I'll play along. This time, Black Dragon's going down."

Larry had no idea the Shadow Syndicate had already mobilized their top ten assassins.

The top ten were secretly heading to Summer Nation, entering Sunset City, planning to take out Black Dragon.

Meanwhile, Larry returned to the Lewis family.

As soon as he walked in, he saw an angry Chloe.
