Chapter 387 Dragon Head Statue
Larry found himself deep within the underground cave.
He had just emerged from the water, struggling with the weight of his diving suit. It was cumbersome, so he decided to take it off.
"Larry, over there," a soldier pointed ahead.
"Got it," Larry nodded. "Lead the way."
"I'll help you, babe," Chloe said, holding onto Larry. "The cave's damp and slippery with moss. Watch your step."
With the soldier leading and Chloe supporting him, Larry moved forward slowly.
The cave was a labyrinth. If Larry hadn't sent someone ahead to scout, he might have wandered for days without finding his way.
After about half an hour, they stopped.
"This is it," one of the soldiers pointed.
The flashlight beam revealed a large open area with a massive stone in the center, towering several stories high. The light revealed it was carved into the shape of a dragon's head.
Years of dampness had blurred the features, but it was unmistakably a dragon's head.
"This is it," Larry exclaimed excitedly.
He remembered this place. Years ago, he had been swept into this cave and found a medical book and the Against Heaven 81 Needles hidden in the crevices of the dragon's head.
Back then, it was too dark to explore further, so he had left in a hurry.
"Search the area," Larry instructed. "Especially around the dragon's head. Look carefully."
"Yes, sir."
The soldiers, armed with flashlights, quickly spread out, some climbing onto the dragon's head to search.
Larry stood by, waiting patiently.
As time passed, his hope dwindled. He knew the chances of finding what he needed were slim.
"Larry, nothing here," a voice echoed through the cave.
"Nothing in the back."
"Nothing on top either."
Hearing this, Larry's face fell with disappointment.
He walked over to the dragon's head, shining his flashlight on it, lost in thought.
This was where he had found the medical book that changed his life.
"Let's head back," he said softly. If he couldn't find what he needed here, he would have to consider the Artwork of Moonlit. Maybe he could return to the Bennett family and borrow it, even if just for a look.
Just as he turned to leave, a loud crash echoed through the cave.
The ground shook violently, as if an earthquake had struck.
"What happened?" The soldiers were startled, quickly retreating.
Larry turned back to the dragon's head.
Under his gaze, the massive stone dragon head began to collapse, crumbling into a pile of rubble.
Larry frowned.
Why did it suddenly collapse?
He pondered deeply.
There must be something unusual about this.
He believed in science, not superstition. Yet, some things defied scientific explanation, like the Against Heaven 81 Needles.
"What's going on?"
"Why did it collapse?"
"This place is strange. We should leave."
The soldiers whispered among themselves.
After a moment of thought, Larry instructed, "Check the rubble for anything unusual."
"Yes, sir."
Despite the oddity of the situation, the soldiers obeyed Larry's command without hesitation. To them, Larry was a war hero, their idol, their faith. Even without a formal position, he was their eternal champion.
The soldiers began clearing the rubble. The stones weren't too large, and they managed to move them aside quickly.
Larry approached, shining his flashlight on the ground.
"Clear it a bit more," he instructed.
"Yes, sir."
The soldiers continued to remove the smaller stones.
Larry's flashlight caught something.
He knelt, tapping the ground lightly, discovering it was hollow. After a quick search, he found a seam and used a knife to pry it open.
A stone slab lifted away, revealing a small pit about two feet in diameter, with a simple box inside.
"Quick, get the box," Larry's voice trembled with excitement.
This box likely contained the method for cultivating Qi.
His hunch was right. A powerful figure had indeed left their legacy here.
The soldiers retrieved the box and handed it to Larry.
He tried to open it but couldn't. Frowning, he examined the box closely, noticing tiny almost invisible holes.
"Needle holes?" Larry muttered, thinking of the Against Heaven 81 Needles.
Could it be the key to opening the box?
As he pondered, gunfire erupted in the distance.
The echoes of gunshots reverberated through the cave.
The soldiers' faces changed, alarmed. "What's happening? Why are there gunshots?"
At that moment, a bloodied soldier stumbled in, shouting, "Run! There are enemies!"
He collapsed after delivering the warning.
"What?" The soldiers' faces turned pale.
Larry rushed over, checking the soldier's pulse, but found no heartbeat. He was already gone.
"Turn off the flashlights," Larry ordered quickly.
The soldiers complied, plunging the cave into darkness.
"Larry, what's going on? Why are there enemies?" a voice whispered in the dark.
Larry didn't know.
The presence of enemies meant those on the surface were in danger.
"What do we do?" Chloe's anxious voice broke the silence. "Is it the people who poisoned us in Southwild?"
"Quiet," Larry whispered.
"Larry, you and Chloe should go. The cave is a maze. It'll be hard for them to find you. We'll cover you."
"Let's all go," Larry replied softly.
He knew the enemies were after him.
These soldiers were battle-hardened, but without heavy weapons, they stood little chance against well-armed foes. Leaving them here would be sending them to their deaths.
In the distance, gunfire continued, accompanied by bright flashlight beams.
"Larry, you need to go now, or it'll be too late."
