Chapter 388 No Way to Escape
                    "Hey, let's stick together."
Larry knew he couldn't just leave on his own. If he did, his brothers were toast.
"Zaid, Larry's too beat to walk. You gotta carry him."
A commanding voice cut through the darkness.
"Got it, boss."
Zaid, the warrior, snapped to attention.
"Come on, let's move! Hurry up, or we're screwed," Larry urged, watching the lights creep closer.
"Zaid, pick him up. The rest of you, get ready to fight."
Zaid hoisted Larry onto his back and grabbed Chloe's hand, hustling deeper into the cave.
Larry shut his eyes, knowing the ones left behind didn't stand a chance.
They hadn't gone far when gunfire erupted, echoing through the cave for a solid ten minutes. Then, silence.
Zaid, with Larry on his back and Chloe in tow, navigated the cave quickly, but he was lost and couldn't risk using a light.
"Man, it's a dead end."
Zaid had been wandering for ages, clueless about the path, and now faced a cliff with nowhere to go.
"Put me down," Larry murmured.
Zaid gently set Larry down on a damp rock.
"What now, Larry?" Zaid asked, anxiety creeping in.
Larry sighed, "It's too late to backtrack. The guys we left are probably gone, and the enemy's hot on our heels. We gotta hide and keep quiet."
"I'm scared, babe," Chloe's voice trembled from the shadows.
She clung to Larry's hand, shaking.
Larry wedged the box he was holding into a crevice and squeezed Chloe's hand, whispering, "It's gonna be okay, don't worry."
"Zaid, you got a gun?"
In the darkness, Zaid handed Larry a gun.
Larry scanned the area, spotting a rock nearby. He whispered, "Take Chloe over there and hide behind it. Stay quiet."
"On it."
Zaid led Chloe away, following Larry's orders.
Larry, drained and weak, climbed onto a rock, lying still like a statue, eyes fixed on the area ahead.
Soon, lights started sweeping the cave, searching.
Larry shrank back, hiding behind the rock, watching the lights and gauging the threat.
"Twenty-three of 'em," he counted, taking a deep breath.
If he were in top shape, he wouldn't sweat even a hundred of them. But now, he was weak, with just one gun and limited ammo. He could only take out a few.
Firing would give away his spot.
He stayed put, hoping they'd realize it was a dead end and turn back.
"Boss, it's a dead end. No way forward."
A voice echoed from the darkness.
"Pull back and search somewhere else."
"Hold up."
Ghostblade raised his hand, stopping the group.
Ghostblade shone his flashlight on the ground. The cave, untouched for years, was covered in moss. Clear footprints marked the moss, showing someone had been there. The only one who could've made them was Larry.
Ghostblade signaled for silence and motioned to his team.
They nodded, weapons at the ready, and moved forward cautiously.
Larry knew he was exposed.
He summoned all his strength to climb a bit higher.
He peeked out, watching the group approach.
They were armed, their powerful flashlights making the cave as bright as day.
Larry knew he had to shoot. If they got too close, it was game over.
He aimed his gun.
He fired.
A man dropped instantly.
"Take cover!"
Voices shouted in the darkness as the group quickly found cover.
Larry didn't move after the first shot.
He knew these were seasoned mercenaries who could pinpoint his location from the gunshot. If he exposed himself again, he'd be met with a barrage of bullets.
Larry huddled behind the rock.
His only chance of survival was to seize a weapon from the enemy.
In his current state, that was impossible.
He felt a wave of helplessness.
After his shot, the enemy turned off their lights.
But he could hear footsteps approaching.
Not far away, behind another rock, Chloe lay still, trembling with fear at the sound of gunfire.
The footsteps grew closer, and her fear intensified.
"Ah!"
A drop of water fell on her neck, making her shiver and cry out.
Zaid knew they were in trouble. He tried to cover her mouth, but it was too late.
He stood up and ran, trying to draw the enemy away.
"There, quick!"
Voices shouted in the darkness.
Lights flashed on.
Zaid was instantly visible.
Gunfire erupted.
Zaid fell, lifeless.
Larry saw this and slapped his forehead in anguish.
"Don't, don't kill me..."
Chloe, terrified, stood up with her hands raised, crying, "Don't kill me, I don't know anything, I don't know anything."
"Grab her."
Several mercenaries quickly subdued Chloe.
Ghostblade approached, looking at Chloe and then at Zaid's lifeless body. He coldly demanded, "Where's Larry?"
"I-I don't know," Chloe stammered.
Ghostblade pressed his gun to her head, "I'll ask you one more time. Where's Larry?"
With the gun to her head, Chloe was paralyzed with fear.
Her legs gave out, and she collapsed.
Ghostblade yanked her up by her hair, "My patience is limited. I'll count to three. If you don't talk, don't blame me."
"One."
"Two."
The echoes filled the cave.
"Let her go." A voice came from the distance.
Everyone turned.
Twenty-some flashlights illuminated Larry.
Larry slowly climbed down from the rock and approached Ghostblade and his men.
They held their weapons, stepping back slightly.
This was Black Dragon, the war god of Summer Nation.
Larry reached them, glanced at Ghostblade and his men, and dropped his gun. He was too weak, collapsing to the ground.
He spoke softly, "I'm the one you want. She has nothing to do with this. Let her go."
Ghostblade extended his hand, "Where's the item?"
Larry frowned.
Were they after the item he had been searching for?
