Chapter 386 Attack, Total Annihilation
Howard was a one-star general with a lot of clout. Getting a submarine? Piece of cake for him.
After making a call, he strolled over to Larry and said, "Hey, Larry, I made the call. The sub's on its way. Just hang in there for a bit."
"Alright," Larry nodded, settling back down.
In just an hour, the submarine showed up. It was a small one, just big enough for five people.
By then, Abigail had woken up. On the shore, with Abigail and Chloe's help, Larry was getting into a wetsuit.
"Larry, are you sure you don't want me to go with you?" Abigail asked, her worry clear as she watched him suit up. "You're still not a hundred percent. What if something goes wrong in the cave?"
Larry replied softly, "I'll be alright."
"Abigail, you stay here on the shore. I'll go with him," Chloe insisted.
Larry glanced at her. "No, you're staying too. I'll just take a quick look and be right back."
"No way," Chloe said firmly. She didn't trust the situation and felt she needed to be there with him.
"Larry, let her go with you. It's better to have someone watching your back," Abigail added, her concern for Larry evident. Even with other soldiers around, having Chloe there felt more reassuring.
Larry decided not to argue. He boarded the submarine. Chloe quickly suited up and joined him.
Howard stayed behind, instructing the other soldiers, "Look after Larry."
"Yes, sir. We will," they responded in unison.
The submarine slowly submerged, disappearing into the river. Abigail sat on the shore, waiting patiently.
In the distance, behind the road in the hills, there were about a dozen people. Leading them was a middle-aged man in camo, no rank insignia. He had a round face and slightly dark skin.
Beside him, another man of similar age chuckled, "Ghostblade, why'd you come yourself? Handling a nobody should be a walk in the park."
The man with the round face and dark skin was peering through binoculars at the scene on the shore. His real name was unknown; he was called Ghostblade. He used to be a mercenary.
Ghostblade said calmly, "The boss insisted I come. They must've found something. Get ready to move. Take out the folks on the shore first, then go after Larry and grab whatever he's after."
"Got it. Let's move."
The group received their orders and quietly advanced.
On the shore, Howard was there with about a dozen soldiers. The rest had gone underwater.
Just then, a gunshot rang out. A soldier hit the ground.
"Enemy attack, take cover!" the soldiers shouted, quickly drawing their guns and finding cover.
Howard heard the gunfire, looked up, and saw dozens of armed men charging. "Idiots," he muttered, quickly grabbing his gun and pulling Abigail, who was staring at the water, down to the ground.
Abigail was so focused on the water that she didn't react until she was pulled down. She quickly asked, "Mr. Cruz, what's happening?"
Howard, lying on the ground, quickly replied, "We're under attack."
"What?" Abigail's face turned pale with fear.
Gunfire continued to erupt. Howard saw that the enemy had dozens of people and heavy weapons. If they kept fighting, they'd be at a disadvantage. Plus, he had Abigail to worry about. He could die, but Abigail couldn't.
"Mr. Cruz, you need to go," a soldier shouted from afar.
"Go." Howard knew the situation was dire. If they kept fighting, even if they could defeat the enemy, Abigail would get hurt.
He grabbed Abigail and ran.
Gunfire continued to rain down.
The enemy's firepower was overwhelming.
Howard's team, though seasoned special forces, only had handguns.
Handguns couldn't suppress the enemy's firepower.
Soon, soldiers were getting injured.
Howard didn't stop, pulling Abigail along as they ran.
Ghostblade saw Howard and Abigail fleeing and immediately ordered, "Chase them. Don't let anyone escape."
The mercenaries quickly pursued.
But they were held back by the soldiers' return fire.
The mercenaries could only shoot at Howard from a distance.
Howard had run several hundred feet.
He was still within the firing range.
He shielded Abigail, taking a bullet in the back.
He fell to the ground.
Abigail fell with him.
"Run, run!"
Howard pushed Abigail, shouting, "Find a safe place, call Free, and get reinforcements."
He handed her his phone.
"The unlock code is four eights. Free's number is in there. Go, run!"
Abigail didn't hesitate. She got up and ran.
Howard sat up, turned, and fired at the distant attackers, covering Abigail's escape.
Despite the enemy's heavy firepower, Howard's team wasn't ordinary. They managed to take down over twenty mercenaries with just handguns.
But eventually, they all fell.
Howard was shot but not dead. He ran out of bullets and lay on the ground, soon surrounded by dozens of guns.
On the shore, the mercenaries checked the bodies.
"Boss, thirteen dead, one captured, but a woman escaped. The one we caught is Howard, a general."
Ghostblade frowned at the news.
The fight had gone on for a while, and Abigail was long gone.
"Send a few to find her. Shoot on sight. Leave some here to clean up. As for the general, keep him. If the woman escapes and calls for help, we can use him as a hostage."
"Yes, sir."
Some went after Abigail.
Others donned the wetsuits Larry had prepared and jumped into the river.
Abigail kept running, not knowing how many times she fell, but she didn't dare look back.
She ran for a long time, and when she realized no one was chasing her, she finally stopped.
She turned around.
No one was there.
She crouched down and cried.
She knew Howard had been shot.
She could guess that Howard was in grave danger.
Crying, she took out Howard's phone, her hands shaking as she entered the unlock code and found Free's private number, dialing it.
At the military base, Free was in a meeting.
His private phone rang.
He frowned, paused the meeting, and picked up the phone, seeing it was Howard. He answered, "What's up? Something wrong?"
"Mr. Cruz is in trouble. We were attacked... The soldiers are fighting... Mr. Cruz told me to call for help... sob..."
A woman's tearful voice came through the phone.
"Damn it."
Free slammed his hand on the table in anger.
He gave orders with a stern face, "Track Larry's phone, track Mr. Cruz's phone, get the helicopter ready, prepare the special forces, and send reinforcements immediately."
After issuing the orders, Free asked, "What's the situation now?"
"I... I don't know. Mr. Cruz was shot. He told me to run."
"Hide and stay out of sight. The military will be there in half an hour."
"Okay."
Abigail hung up.
Worried the enemy might follow, she ran.
She avoided the main road, crossing it and heading into the dense forest.
