Chapter 10 Is This Your New Lover?
Winona stared at her as if she had seen a ghost. "Do you think someone who likes you would make you lonely for three years? Your idea of love is truly special!"
Rebecca agreed with that. "Yeah, but why is he so persistent in asking you to move back? After all, you'll have to move out again in three months. It's really unnecessary."
Winona didn't know what was going on and had no interest in exploring it.
For dinner, they ended up eating barbecue outside. Winona ordered a lot and added a lot of chili, making her sweat and feel refreshed all over.
That night, fearing that the man would cause trouble again, Winona turned off her phone.
The next day, she got up early, packed her luggage into the car, and moved to her newly rented apartment complex.
After tidying up her appearance, she went to her new workplace.
Mr. Baker, the person in charge here, was in his sixties and not very tall. However, when he saw Winona, he wore a surprised expression on his face!
"So, you're the one Rebecca mentioned!"
"So the repairer called Windy is you?" Winona nodded politely. "Yes."
Over the years, Winona didn't take on many jobs, but every time she did, they were of high difficulty, giving her a prominent reputation in the industry.
However, she didn't want to expose herself to the public, so she didn't use her real name and instead chose a simple and rough stage name, Windy.
Before this, Mr. Baker had never met her in person, only witnessing the works she had repaired. Her skills were exquisite, her technique superb. There were even a few pieces that industry veterans weren't confident in restoring, but Windy managed to do it.
So subconsciously, Mr. Baker had always assumed that Windy was someone around his age, but he never expected her to be such a young girl!
"I've seen the works you repaired, you are truly talented and young!" Winona chuckled, "You overestimate me, there's still much for me to learn."
As they spoke, Mr. Baker led her to an empty seat. "This is your workstation, Alex..." He raised his voice and called someone, "Go get a few objects for the new colleague to identify."
As a cultural relic repairer, identifying the dynasties, characteristics, and authenticity of artifacts was the most fundamental requirement. Originally, someone who Mr. Baker personally invited wouldn't have to go through this entry assessment, but unfortunately, the gap between Winona and his expectations was too great... so they still followed the procedure.
Alex quickly brought up several artifacts from different dynasties, carefully placing them on the table. Seeing this scene, the other people in the studio also gathered around, quietly discussing, "Wasn't it said that a master will today? How come it's a young girl?"
"She's probably just a fraud, trying to intern with us. Didn't expect to encounter someone as difficult as Mr. Baker to test her."
"I heard Mr. Baker personally made several trips for her. He will definitely be disappointed now!"
As they spoke, Winona had already identified the objects on the table, mentioning the dynasties, origins, and even some minute details and customs without missing a beat.
Alex was quite surprised, "So fast?"
He was Mr. Baker's student, entering the field right after graduating from university. It had been almost ten years now, and honestly, even he couldn't identify these things as quickly as Winona did.
Mr. Baker nodded approvingly, acknowledging Winona's theoretical abilities, but her practical skills still needed to be observed through practice.
Since he hadn't personally witnessed Winona repairing cultural relics, he didn't dare to give her a real one to experiment with, so he had Alex bring a counterfeit object for her to repair as an assessment.
"Don't mind, this is the process in our studio. Those items are precious and irreplaceable, so we have to be more cautious in selecting personnel."
Winona expressed her understanding.
The work of restoration was lengthy and monotonous, and with everyone not holding much hope for Winona, considering her young age and limited experience, the others left since there was no excitement to see.
Not until the end of the day when they saw the finished restoration, everyone was left dumbfounded!
Someone sighed softly, "I've been working here for years, even I couldn't accomplish this level of restoration."
"During that time, it took me three days to repair this fragment," Winona said.
Everyone was amazed by Winona's quick and excellent repair skills, except for Mr. Baker. He wore reading glasses, holding the repaired fragment in his hand, and remained silent for a while.
If someone looked closely, they could notice his trembling fingers, unable to control the shaking.
Mr. Baker looked up at Winona, his eyes filled with a mix of complicated emotions. "What is your relationship with Harper?"
When Winona heard that name, her eyes flickered intensely, but it happened in a flash, and no one noticed.
After a brief silence, she replied, "I've heard of her, but I don't know her."
Harper was once a shining star in the world of artifact restoration, a talented and versatile restorer whose skills were described as "the hands kissed by God." Anyone in this field had heard her name, but she disappeared shortly after gaining fame.
For many years, nobody knew anything about her.
Mr. Baker continued questioning, "But your restoration techniques... they are almost identical to hers."
"My grandfather was also an artifact restorer, and I learned from him."
As Mr. Baker listened, his expression gradually darkened, and in the end, he nodded without probing further. However, he clearly looked disappointed.
Nevertheless, Winona's abilities were evident to all, and Mr. Baker believed he had found a talented individual. He introduced her to everyone officially, saying, "This is Windy, our new colleague."
Alex, who was standing beside them, was surprised. "Windy? Is that the Windy I know? But she should be an elder. How..."
"Become a young girl and so beautiful?" Mr. Baker gave him a stern glance, signaling him to be quiet.
"Don't mind him, Windy," Winona simply smiled.
Afterward, Mr. Baker introduced her to the others. The studio had a small staff, totaling only eight or nine individuals, and they were all friendly. Their compliments were genuine, lacking the ambiguous working atmosphere present at the Bailey Group.
Winona liked it this way, especially considering this was her most beloved job.
After work, the studio members gathered to have a meal together. It was a tradition at View Studio to celebrate the arrival of new employees with a meal, as a welcoming feast.
They chose a Seafood Diner as the dining place, and across from the diner was an upscale restaurant. On the second floor of the restaurant, Samuel stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, smoking a cigarette absentmindedly. He glanced downstairs.
He raised his chin and asked Zachary beside him, "Do you see that? Isn't that Winona?"
Zachary looked up, following Samuel's indication and indeed saw Winona chatting and laughing with a few people.
