Chapter 586 Betting, Using You as a Stake
Zachary originally just wanted to mess with Matthew. Whether Matthew went on the blind date or not was his own business, but it was clear Matthew still had feelings for Winona.
So, Zachary changed his plan.
As long as Matthew stayed single, Zachary couldn't relax. He always felt like someone was lurking, ready to snatch Winona away.
Matthew stood nearby, watching Zachary and Nova team up to arrange everything for him.
What a jerk.
Nova held the booklet like it was a treasure. "I need to study this carefully. Thanks, Zachary. When you and Winona get married, I'll give you a huge wedding gift."
The last part was said deliberately for Matthew's benefit, hoping he wouldn't be too stubborn to move on.
After Nova left, Matthew snapped at Zachary, "Is the Bailey Group planning to switch to matchmaking now?"
Setting him up on a blind date and even making a booklet—only Zachary could come up with something like that.
Zachary replied, "We're all friends here. Since I'm settled, how could I bear to see you single? I have to worry about you a bit more."
Matthew looked past him, not responding.
"What are you looking at?"
"Seeing if you're growing a tail," Matthew said, noting Zachary's smugness. "You act like everyone should know Winona's going to marry you. Just because you proposed successfully doesn't mean it's a done deal. She might get tired of you and kick you to the curb. After all, a talented and beautiful woman like her won't lack suitors."
Zachary was speechless.
In the past, he couldn't have imagined such bitter words coming from the usually refined and gentlemanly Matthew. Jealousy really did change people.
"There's no need to..." Zachary's words suddenly got stuck.
Matthew raised an eyebrow, gloating. "Why'd you stop talking?"
In the dining area.
Winona had just turned around with her tray when she almost bumped into a man. She quickly stepped back. "Sorry."
Luckily, she didn't have the habit of walking while turning, or she would have spilled everything on him.
The man was even more flustered than Winona, his exposed skin turning red. He waved his hands, stammering, "No, no, it's my fault. I was in your way."
Winona quickly glanced at his face and then looked down. "Did I scare you?"
Winona smiled and was about to leave.
"Hi, I..." The man called out hastily. "Can I ask you to dance?"
Winona didn't respond immediately. She looked around and saw a group of people watching with teasing expressions. There were both men and women, and they didn't look the least bit guilty when she caught their eyes.
"Sorry," she said.
The man clasped his hands together in a plea. "I lost a game with my friends. They told me to ask you to dance, or I'd have to shout 'I love you' three times to that woman over there."
He pointed to the heaviest girl in the room, looking at Winona with a pleading face. "Please."
Winona's polite smile vanished. She regretted not spilling her drink and food on him earlier.
"You play games and use others as pawns. Why would you think I'd help you? To you, shouting 'I love you' to that girl is a punishment. But I think just showing up in front of her is an insult. So, please, keep your foul mouth shut. Otherwise, people might think you had something worse than food for lunch."
The man's face turned beet red. He was naturally timid and had only approached Winona because his friends egged him on, and he had some liquid courage. He never expected such a sharp tongue from someone as angelic as Winona.
In a high-class event like this, he didn't expect to hear such blunt words.
Seeing the man still standing there, speechless and unwilling to leave, Winona raised her hand to show her ring. "I have a fiancé, and he's very jealous. If you don't leave, he might have security throw you out."
"Is your fiancé Matthew?"
Today was Matthew's birthday party. Besides the Watson family, who else had the authority to call security? And only Matthew was around Winona's age.
Zachary was furious.
He had just walked over and heard Winona say she had a fiancé. His mood lifted, but then quickly soured again.
As soon as Zachary got close, Winona saw him and noticed the rapid change in his expression. She couldn't help but smile. "What did you get Matthew that's so secretive?"
Even she wasn't allowed to know.
Winona had tried to sneak a peek earlier, but Zachary's back had blocked her view.
Zachary didn't hide it from her. "A matchmaking booklet."
Winona couldn't help but laugh. "A matchmaking booklet?"
"Matthew keeps thinking about you," Zachary said, taking Winona's hand and glancing at the man in front of them. "Do you know him?"
Even if the man didn't know Zachary before, the recent flood of news made his face recognizable.
He didn't expect Winona's fiancé to be Zachary.
"No, no, I was just getting some food and didn't see Miss here. Almost bumped into her," he said, not daring to let Zachary know they had used his fiancée as a bet. "Sorry."
Zachary didn't hold back. "You must be blind."
To think he linked Winona and Matthew together.
The man didn't dare argue, looking at Winona with pleading eyes, silently begging her not to expose him.
Winona wasn't a saint. She didn't feel the need to protect him. "He lost a game with his friends and used me as a bet to ask me to dance."
Zachary snorted. "A bet?"
The man's blood ran cold at the sound. Fortunately, Zachary didn't say more and just led Winona to get more food.
He let out a long breath, thinking it was over. But as soon as he returned to his friends, security came.
The whole group was thrown out without any dignity.
Zachary, in a good mood, looked at Winona. "Did you just say I'm your fiancé?"
