Chapter 47 What's the matter, regretting it now?

Fiona frowned.

"Winona, about this matter..."

At that moment, her phone rang, providing her with a timely solution to her urgent situation.

She took a few steps away and answered the call. After a short while, she quickly walked back to Winona, saying, "Winona, I apologize. It was my fault regarding today's issue. The painting did indeed have a problem in my hands."

Winona was puzzled by Fiona's sudden change in tone after answering the phone. She saw Fiona activate the speakerphone on her mobile and said, "Repeat what you just told me."

Emily's voice came through the phone, "Fiona, I'm sorry. I immediately wiped off the water I spilled. I meant to let you know, but then I got busy with something else and forgot. Is the painting very important?"

Hearing this, Winona raised an eyebrow and said, "Well, isn't it just a coincidence? Miss Clark and I were just discussing this matter, and then Emily calls."

The implication in her words was clear, evident to anyone.

"Mrs. Sullivan, this is my mistake. If someone should be blamed, blame me. It has nothing to do with Fiona."

"Alright then, let's just drop it." Since Emily took the blame, Winona saw no need to continue holding Fiona responsible. Fiona had absolutely no dignity today. If Winona persisted, Fiona would only become more vulnerable, eliciting sympathy.

Clearly, Fiona hadn't yet grasped the situation. Winona then linked arms with Lydia and left her presence to attend to the guests.

And so, this play that could hardly be called a farce came to an end.

As Zachary watched the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law laughing and talking together, he was about to approach them when he caught sight of Matthew's gaze... as if it had been fixed on Winona the whole time.

He halted his steps. "What's the matter? Regretting something?"

Matthew snapped back to reality, looking confused. "Regret? Regret what?"

"Regret not agreeing to marry her when she approached you in the past."

Detecting a tinge of jealousy in the man's words, Matthew chuckled softly. It was rare to hear Zachary speak to him in such a manner.

Matthew found himself slightly intrigued and jokingly replied, "The way you put it, maybe I do regret it a little. If I had considered it back then, perhaps she would have been Mrs. Watson. Don't you think?"

Zachary looked at him, noticing that Matthew's expression seemed unchanged, yet there was something subtly different about him.

His gaze lowered to the partially concealed wristwatch on Matthew's cuff, and he suddenly chuckled, "In that case, we must thank this watch."

Matthew glanced at his own watch on his hand, asking, "What's with this watch?"

He took it off and examined it carefully, finding nothing particularly exceptional about it aside from its price.

Meanwhile, Winona, who happened to be passing by, overheard their conversation, causing her face to instantly change!

She quickly released Lydia, hastily walked towards Zachary. In her rush and high-heeled shoes, she practically collided into the man's embrace. Zachary, caught off guard, instinctively held onto her waist to steady her.

"Today is my mother's birthday banquet. How could you let the two of us women go drink and socialize?" Winona looked up and spoke, her breath smelling of alcohol wafting onto Zachary's chin.

Zachary lowered his head slightly and could see the woman's glossy, rosy lips, her eyes shimmering with moisture, especially enchanting in the light.

Before he could respond, Winona took his arm and pulled him away without hesitation.

From an outsider's perspective, it looked like a wife acting spoiled and a husband indulging her.

But in reality, Zachary's arm was nearly bruised from Winona's tight grip!

And that was through two layers of clothing, indicating just how much force she used.

"If you dare mention the watch again, I won't let it go." Winona turned her face to the side and, in an angle hidden from others, gritted her teeth and threatened him.

Zachary squinted his eyes and remained silent.

Seeing his silence, Winona thought her threat had worked and grew even more confident. "Did you hear me?"

"Mrs. Bailey," the man's deep voice carried a subtle hoarseness, "you got some foundation on my face."

Winona paused for a moment, hurriedly took a step back, and withdrew from Zachary's embrace.

Her skin was fair and flawless, with the makeup artist only applying a thin layer of foundation. However, Zachary was wearing a black suit today, and even the slightest white mark was very noticeable.

Winona remained silent for a few seconds and sincerely suggested, turning her threat into genuine advice, "If you want to remarry in the future, it's better for you to shut up now. It'll only make you look more embarrassing, not me. After all, I'm not from a prestigious family."

"I have money. Who dares to say anything bad about me?" Zachary then said something that left Winona unable to retort, an incredibly provoking statement. "As for remarrying, you should worry about yourself more. You don't have much money, and you're getting older."

At this moment, Winona felt like she was having a heart attack from anger, unable to utter a word for quite some time.

Zachary didn't continue with any other topics. He merely glanced sideways at Matthew, who was still standing there chatting, and asked, "Don't you want me to bring up that matter again?"

"Mhmm." The woman grumpily squeezed out a monosyllabic response from her throat.

"Then give me a kiss." Zachary said.

Winona looked up in surprise, her eyes widening. She saw Zachary gazing at her with lowered eyes, his handsome face even more defined under the light's reflection.

Zachary felt a bit uncomfortable being stared at by her, so he pressed his lips downwards. "Don't overthink it. Mom is watching us. Just playing along for appearances."

Winona turned her head and indeed met Lydia's smiling gaze...

Zachary was truly a natural actor, always aware of the "camera."

After a few seconds of silence, Winona lifted her heels. Zachary's hand lightly encircled her waist the whole time. As she tiptoed, the soft fabric brushed against his palm, sending a peculiar, tingling sensation from his palm all the way to his heart.

With her proximity, a soft, sweet scent filled the air around them.

Winona did not kiss his lips but brushed her face against his, bringing her lips close to his ear. Her voice carried a challenge, "Forget about that."

Zachary did not expect Winona, who seemed knowledgeable and reasonable before him, to say such words. His expression immediately darkened as he was about to lecture her, but Winona stepped back several steps.

The posture she took was quite disdainful, "I'm going to accompany my mother."

After playing around, she wanted to leave?

Zachary couldn't let her have her way. He reached out and pulled her back into his embrace, then without a word, he leaned down and kissed her lips.

However, considering they were in a public place, he didn't go too far. He lightly pecked her lips, just touching the surface. "Forget? Hmm?"

What is she even thinking? It's simply effortless.

Winona froze, feeling like this jerk was insulting her!

"Zachary..."

Fiona's voice interrupted, bringing an unpleasant atmosphere. It sounded as if she had seen something shocking, her voice trembling with disbelief.

It is worth mentioning that Zachary has always been composed and courteous. Even holding hands in public was uncommon, and privately, he kept his distance like a gentleman.

Now looking back, during the two years Fiona and Zachary were together, the only intimate gesture they had was linking arms, nothing more.

Winona was initially angry that Zachary took advantage of her, but upon seeing Fiona, her mood instantly improved. She even reached out and wrapped her arm around the man's neck, kissing him again!

Her kiss wasn't just a peck, as her dexterous tongue traced his tightly sealed lips, trying to pry them open.
