Chapter 683 He Went to the Hospital Himself

Zachary put away his phone and mumbled, "Probably."

The video was blurry due to poor lighting, but Maeve's actions were still clear. Survival is instinctual, yet she managed to suppress that instinct and drown herself in a pool five feet deep.

Winona remembered what Maeve had said that night, "It seems like someone took that girl to threaten her. Maeve probably..."

Zachary didn't let her finish. He reached out and covered her mouth, "Investigating is the police's job, rescuing hostages is the police's job. We'll hand the video over to the police, clear your name, and that's the end of it."

As for Alton's situation, she didn't need to worry about that either.

Zachary put his arm around Winona's shoulder and led her outside. She turned to Rebecca and said, "I'm going to the police station first, I'll come back later."

She had plans to have dinner with Rebecca that evening.

Rebecca, hugging a pillow and with one leg curled up, leaned against the sofa. She hadn't said a word since Zachary came in. "I'll just eat dinner by myself. Can't you see someone is impatient, eager to drag you back to bed?"

She touched her hair and sighed, "My thick hair can't withstand your passionate love."

Zachary took out his phone and dialed Anthony's number right in front of Rebecca. "Your girlfriend is looking for someone to have dinner with."

The phone wasn't on speaker, so it was unclear what was said on the other end. It was probably something about being busy and unable to leave, because Zachary then said, "She said she's going to Night Club for dinner."

Rebecca exploded, raising her voice, "What? Zachary, you're slandering me! When did I ever say I was going to Night Club for dinner? As an investor, don't you know how bad the food is there? It's not fit for human consumption!"

Even cheap roadside pizza is better than that.

Rebecca didn't stay angry for long because as soon as Zachary hung up, her phone rang. It was Anthony calling.

Her fingers turned white as she gripped her phone, and she let out a cold laugh, "Zachary, just wait. I won't let you off easy!"

Rebecca answered Anthony's call, "If you dare believe him over me, we're breaking up."

A man who can be easily swayed and thinks an outsider's words are more credible than his girlfriend's is definitely not worth keeping.

There was a moment of silence on the other end, "I just wanted to ask what you want for dinner so I can order it."

Rebecca's tone softened a bit, "Aren't you busy?"

"I can order takeout. I'll have my assistant pick you up later."

Anthony had been very busy lately, handling several cases with court dates close together. His desk was piled high with files, and aside from meeting clients, he spent all his time at the law firm.

Rebecca heard the exhaustion in his voice and felt a pang of guilt for threatening to break up as soon as she answered the call.

She coughed lightly, "No need, I'll eat at home tonight. Don't send anyone to pick me up."

Anthony sighed, "I've been eating boxed meals lately."

Rebecca was puzzled, "Then go ahead and eat them."

"If you come over, I can eat better."

With his girlfriend around, he would put more effort into meals, no matter how busy he was.

Rebecca was silent.

She could only think of one reason why her presence would improve his meals: "You want to mooch off me?"

Anthony was probably speechless.

After a long pause, he hung up.

After handing the video to the police, Winona's suspicion was temporarily cleared. Once the video was verified, Maeve's case could be closed. As they got into the car, Zachary asked, "Home?"

"Yeah," Winona said, noticing the scent in the car, "Did you change the air freshener?"

She had wanted to ask last time.

Richard spoke before Zachary could, "Mrs. Bailey, it has pain-relieving properties. Mr. Bailey uses it when he has headaches."

Winona picked up on the hidden meaning in his words and frowned at Zachary, "Did you have a headache earlier?"

Zachary shot a reproachful look at his talkative assistant, but Richard, focused on driving, didn't notice.

"Has Mr. Bailey been having headaches more frequently?"

Zachary quickly answered, "Not frequently, just occasionally."

"Shut up, I wasn't asking you," Winona said coldly, then continued questioning Richard, "What did the doctor say when he went for a check-up?"

Richard replied, "Mr. Bailey went to the hospital alone."

Though he didn't know the diagnosis, he was with Zachary all the time and knew his condition well.

When they picked up Winona from Rebecca's store, Zachary's state was clearly off. Richard didn't have many connections, but Winona worked at a museum and knew influential people, which might help.

Zachary's condition hadn't been this severe before, so Richard thought it was just a headache that would soon be cured. Since Zachary hadn't told Winona, he kept quiet.

But now, more people meant more options, so this couldn't be kept from Mrs. Bailey.

Winona smiled, "If anything happens at the company, call me directly. I'll give you an extra salary. If he targets you, let me know."

Richard agreed, "Got it."

Zachary interjected, "You don't need him, I'll tell you."

Winona's smile was cold, "I don't trust you."

Back at Regal Oaks, Zachary had just changed his shoes when Winona held out her hand, "The test report. The one you secretly did."

She emphasized "secretly." The tests she took him for were basic and showed no issues.

Zachary said, "The report shows no major problems. The doctor said it might be side effects from the medication. The drug I took has addictive properties, and combined with deep hypnosis, it caused my headaches, memory confusion, and decline."

Winona was unmoved, "The report."

Zachary replied, "It's in the study upstairs. I'll get it for you."
