Chapter 398 Accompany Me to a Blind Date
Frank almost found his own anger funny. "Don't sweat it. I'll take care of this. No way am I forcing a young lady to marry a guy in a coma just to save face."
Zachary kept quiet.
With Frank's promise, Zachary knew that even if Winona was his daughter, she wouldn't be pushed into marrying the comatose guy because of some old favor. Still, he wasn't happy and said, "Breaking a promise isn't something a man should do; it invites criticism."
"Thanks for your concern, Mr. Bailey, but I've been around long enough to not be scared by threats," Frank said firmly. "The Turner Family owes a debt to her son, but expecting us to marry off a good girl to him is a no-go. My dad only made that engagement promise because the doctor said her son would wake up someday."
"I'd rather take the heat than do something like that."
Zachary looked at Frank's righteous face, feeling a sharp pain in his chest from anger.
Zachary thought to himself, 'You're so noble and great!'
Now he got why the Turner Family had been stuck in Mode City for so long. With such a stiff personality, they wouldn't last in Dreamopolis.
Frank asked, "Are you leaving, Mr. Bailey? Should I have Rodolfo see you out?"
Zachary's face darkened, and he said coldly, "No need, I'll leave on my own."
Frank would rather take the blame than agree to the marriage, so whether Winona got married or not didn't matter. Given Frank's impression of him, he was probably on the same level as the comatose guy, so it was better not to reveal his identity.
Zachary stood up to leave, and Frank handed him the wrapped chess set. "This gift is too valuable; I can't accept it. Your visit is respect enough. It's late today; I'll invite you another day for a proper game."
Zachary said, "A gift once given shouldn't be taken back. Please keep it; consider it a birthday gift."
"My birthday was half a year ago, and the next one is still six months away."
Hearing the door close, Frank felt great.
Leaving Waterfront Pearl, Zachary went straight to the office. He wasn't lying to Winona when he said he'd be late; he really had work to handle until late.
The next day.
Winona got a call from Rebecca just before getting off work. "Come with me to a blind date, will you? My mom ordered it, and if I don't go, she'll kill me. I heard it's another guy who studied abroad."
"You're still going on blind dates?" Today was the first day of the appraisal event, and there were many private collectors. Her voice was hoarse.
"Yeah, I don't want to get married, but my mom insists, so we compromise," Rebecca said, sounding resigned. "Did you drive?"
"Yes."
"Alright, I'll send you the location. If the guy turns out to be weird, you have to pull me away; don't let me lose my temper on the spot."
After hanging up, Winona sent a message to Zachary, saying she was going with Rebecca to a blind date and he didn't need to wait for her for dinner. Zachary was probably swamped and didn't reply.
The restaurant was picked by the guy, a fancy, romantic spot.
Rebecca frowned as soon as she saw it. "He didn't even ask for my opinion when booking the place. Minus a hundred points."
Winona was surprised. "What's the full score?"
"A hundred," Rebecca said nonchalantly.
"You deducted all his points right away? Isn't that a bit harsh?"
"We're strangers and completely independent. If he doesn't even ask before booking a restaurant, how can you expect him to respect you in other matters? I didn't give him negative points because I thought he might just have low emotional intelligence from studying too much."
The guy had already sent the booth number, and Rebecca headed straight to the window seat.
Dressed in a suit, wearing rimless glasses, slim, with a gentle demeanor, he looked every bit the intellectual.
Judging by his appearance, he seemed normal enough.
Seeing them, the man quickly stood up, his eyes scanning Rebecca and Winona. "Which one of you is Miss Davis?"
Rebecca extended her hand confidently and said with a faint smile, "Rebecca. This is my friend, Winona."
The man shook her hand and introduced himself. "I heard Miss Davis is in the antique business? I happen to like that too. I took an elective course on it in college. Maybe I could visit your shop sometime; I'm looking to buy a handpiece."
Talking about related fields eased the awkwardness of the blind date.
The start was good, at least there were no awkward topics. Winona watched the two chat and was about to find an excuse to leave when she saw a woman rushing towards them.
Winona pulled Rebecca up. Ever since being splashed with acid, she had a psychological shadow and got nervous easily, especially since the woman looked hostile.
The woman's eyes were fixed on Rebecca.
The woman screamed at the man who had studied abroad, "I'm pregnant with your child, and I'm bleeding. You left me to go on a date with this bitch. Do you have any conscience? I send you to study abroad. Do you appreciate my hard work?"
Rebecca was shocked. "Fuck!"
Winona was also stunned.
She had just dragged Rebecca a couple of steps when the woman's eyes, like a radar, locked onto them. "It's all your fault. You seduce my husband."
She grabbed a glass of lemon water and threw it at them.
Winona quickly pushed Rebecca aside.
The lemon water missed them but hit someone behind them. They saw the water dripping from the person's black suit, soaking the floor.
When they stood up, no one was behind them. This person must have just arrived and got splashed. What bad luck.
Rebecca's eyes followed the suit up, wanting to see what the unlucky person looked like.
From the neck to the jaw, then the nose, he looked more and more familiar.
Holy crap, wasn't this Anthony?
