Chapter 112 Could She Be Pregnant?
The attendees of the auction were all from the same social circle, accustomed to seeing each other on various occasions. Upon hearing this, someone immediately chimed in, "Really? How did you see that?"
The invitation is only shown at the entrance; Fiona was just climbing the stairs at the moment.
"When she got out of the car, she dropped the invitation, and I caught a glimpse of it. It seemed to have 'Bailey' on it."
Considering the surname "Bailey," one associated with status and position, she could only think of Zachary.
"There was news about the two of them before when the dancer fell off the stage and was carried away by Mr. Bailey. To attend the auction with his invitation now probably means good news is on the horizon."
The women chatting with Lydia were aware that Zachary was married. One of them said, "These people know nothing. They are always spouting nonsense, as if all their upbringing was only to cover up their beastly thoughts."
Lydia maintained a fitting smile on her face, though inside she cursed Zachary a hundred times. Given the situation, Fiona holding that invitation would seem to indirectly acknowledge her relationship with Zachary, and to those who knew about his marital status, it was as if Zachary had taken a mistress!
She certainly felt like lashing out at people, but who knew if the invitation in Fiona's hand was really given by that scoundrel?
What if it causes a scene? It'd be even more embarrassing. Plus, there's media present!
It was just infuriatingly troublesome!
How on earth did she give birth to such an exasperating child?
Today, Fiona wore a white backless V-neck gown. Her curled, long hair cascaded down, partially obscuring her exposed back. Her years of dance training gave her a lithe and flexible figure, and her poise outshone many of the elite ladies present.
Her eyes unexpectedly met Lydia's. She hesitated, but eventually turned and walked over. "Auntie."
She clutched the invitation in her hand as if it were a hot potato.
Lydia, dressed in a dignified suit with her hair neatly coiffed, looked at Fiona with palpable contempt. "Miss Clark, do you mind if I take a look at your invitation?"
Though her voice was soft, those who were gossiping perked up their ears, glancing out of the corners of their eyes.
Fiona's fingers turned white from gripping so hard. She knew Lydia didn't like her, but she hadn't expected to be confronted publicly. "Let's discuss this privately. We shouldn't become the subject of others' ridicule."
Even though she hadn't seen the name on the invitation, her reaction said it all.
The contempt in Lydia's eyes grew stronger, as if Fiona were some revolting trash. "You may not be aware, but my daughter-in-law is also here today, and I won't allow anything that belongs to her to be worn by another woman."
She extended her hand. "If you wish to maintain your reputation, please hand over the invitation and leave."
Zachary never introduced Fiona to Lydia, but Fiona had deliberately sought connections to ingratiate herself with her.
At that time, Lydia had responded coldly to her flattery. "I'm aware you're my son's girlfriend. You don't need to try so hard to please me because I don't approve it."
Fiona couldn't understand. How could Lydia accept Winona, but not her?
"I'm here to photograph one of the jewelry pieces. I won't stay long, I won't interact with Winona, and certainly, I won't say anything to tarnish Mr. Bailey's reputation."
"I don't care about your purpose, Miss Clark. As long as you're not using my son's invitation, you could even take the throne, for all I care. I won't spare you another glance." Lydia never liked her, and treating her this politely for so long was quite a concession of dignity.
Lydia snatched the invitation from Fiona's hands, tore it into pieces right in front of her, and tossed them into a passing waiter's tray.
Fiona's expression alternated between shades of fury and pallor. "Auntie, you've gone too far."
Lydia ignored her and turned to see Winona walking toward her. She immediately walked over and said, "Why did it take you so long? Are you cold?" While speaking, she reached out to feel her hands.
Winona had actually been outside for a while, but seeing Fiona talking with Lydia, she didn't walk over.
Noticing that Winona's gaze was still on Fiona, Lydia patted her hand to draw her attention. "She's not important. Don't mind her. Can you call Zachary and find out where he is?"
Just then, a black Bentley stopped at the entrance. The door opened, and Zachary stepped out.
Reporters guarding the venue swarmed him. "Mr. Bailey, are you here with Miss Clark today?"
They had gotten wind of the incident. They knew the invitation Fiona was holding belonged to Zachary.
Zachary frowned and did not answer.
He stepped forward and headed inside the hotel. The reporters did not dare to stop him and only followed as he entered.
It was an impressive scene indeed!
"Are you and Miss Clark a couple?"
"Miss Clark is here with your invitation today. Is there a good news on the horizon?"
Lydia's face darkened. "These paparazzi are useless! They always spread rumors. With which eye did they see Zachary and that woman being a couple?"
Winona said quietly, "Maybe with both the eyes."
There were plenty of women who wanted to start rumors with Zachary, but apart from Fiona, none had the chance to make the news before being quashed.
If this unique favor wasn't love, then Zachary was truly doomed to be single.
"No, we can't let these people spread false news," Lydia said as she pulled Winona toward Zachary, not believing that the rascal would dare cause a scandal with Fiona in front of her.
Winona hadn't expected Lydia to call Zachary, or else she wouldn't have come.
Fiona felt a rush of panic. "Zachary..."
Everyone knew she had come with Zachary's invitation. How would others see her if he acknowledged Winona publicly?
Hearing her, Zachary looked over.
Fiona's body swayed; she was already thin, and, dressed lightly, she seemed to be on the verge of fainting.
Winona noticed it too. She quickly held Lydia back and said, "Mom, I won't go over there. He and I are about to..."
Before she could finish, Lydia said loudly, "Zachary, your wife isn't feeling well. She just threw up. Could she be pregnant?"
