Chapter 360 Did You Offend Someone?

At the same time, a frantic voice came from above her head, "Xavier, your kid's been snatched! The kidnapper wants you on the phone, like, right now. They said they'll off him in ten seconds. Talk fast! Hurry!"

Winona's hand, reaching for the receiver, froze mid-air.

She knew Xavier was a dead end. Even if she swore to protect his family later, this guy wouldn't spill a thing.

Xavier's eyes were bloodshot, and he threw himself against the glass, babbling, "I'm Xavier. I know. I won't mess up again. Please, let my son go. I'm begging you."

Then he started banging his head against the glass, over and over. "I'm begging you. I'm begging you."

Xavier hit the glass so hard his forehead started bleeding before the nearby guard could stop him.

Winona, in a daze, watched the blood trickle down the glass. She walked out of the visitation hall with cold hands and feet, Xavier's tearful gratitude echoing behind her, "Thank you, thank you."

As she stepped out of the prison, the blazing summer sun beat down on her, but Winona felt no warmth, just a chill that seeped into her bones. Her heart was a frozen mess.

She got into her car.

The prison parking lot was open-air, no shade at all. The car had been baking under the sun and was scorching hot inside.

But Winona didn't notice the heat. She didn't turn on the AC until her body started to protest. She then quickly started the car and cranked the AC to the max.

She didn't know how long she'd been sitting there when her phone rang.

It was a video call from Rebecca.

Winona answered, "Hey."

"What are you up to? You sound like crap," Rebecca's voice was buzzing with excitement. "I scored concert tickets, two of 'em. One for each of us. Finally, we get to pay to sing along with the singer. It's like I'm hosting the concert."

Winona stayed silent, feeling speechless about Rebecca's idea.

Rebecca rambled on for a bit before noticing Winona was unusually quiet. She leaned closer to the screen and checked out the background, "Prison? What are you doing at a prison? Couldn't you find a shady spot to park? Isn't it boiling in the car?"

Winona looked dejected, "Rebecca, can you come pick me up? Take a cab here and drive my car back."

"Oh, okay," Rebecca agreed without even asking why. "I'll be there in half an hour tops. Find some shade to wait for me."

Half an hour later.

A taxi pulled up at the prison entrance. Rebecca hopped out and ran towards Winona's car, shouting back at Anthony behind her, "Hey, hurry up. It's scorching out here."

Anthony, dressed in a long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves casually rolled up to his elbows, looked every bit the elite professional. Despite the blazing sun, he walked leisurely and unhurriedly.

He'd been here a few times before. With his standout looks and well-known rep, the guards at the entrance recognized him, "Mr. Lewis."

Anthony nodded and handed the guard a cigarette.

Rebecca pulled Winona into the back seat, "We'll sit in the back. We got ourselves a chauffeur."

Anthony walked up to the car just in time to catch that. He smirked through the car door, "Forty bucks, please!"

Winona's car didn't have a partition between the front and back seats. Rebecca was worried but held back from asking.

She was a bit nearsighted and needed glasses to drive. Without them, everything was a blur, and she felt uneasy. Everglade Penitentiary was up in the mountains, and she was scared of driving off the road by mistake.

Anthony had come to her store to pick up something he bought earlier, so she dragged him along as a chauffeur.

As the car hit the mountain road, it got cooler. Tall trees blocked the sunlight. Winona felt a bit stifled and rolled down the back window a little.

Rebecca noticed Anthony frequently glancing at the rearview mirror, so she looked there often too. Their eyes met a few times, and she sensed something subtle.

Could this guy have a thing for Winona?

She didn't think it was about herself because she had ridden in Anthony's car a few times. This guy didn't even consider her a person, let alone glance at her or talk to her.

She sighed softly. He and Zachary seemed tight, yet he secretly wanted to pursue Zachary's girlfriend.

"Mr. Lewis, what are you looking at?"

Anthony ignored her, "Miss Sullivan, have you pissed someone off?"

Winona looked up, confused, "What's up?"

The only person she had pissed off was the one who hurt her mom.

He nodded towards the rearview mirror, "That car behind us has been tailing us the whole way."

Rebecca and Winona both turned to look and saw a black car trailing behind them.

Rebecca squinted, trying to see the license plate, "There's only one road down the mountain. Could be a coincidence?"

Anthony didn't think so. He had tested it several times. When he slowed down, so did the car behind him. When he sped up, the car behind followed suit. If it were just bad driving, they wouldn't dare to overtake on a mountain road, but they didn't even try to pass when he moved to the side, which was suspicious.

"Maybe. I tend to get followed a lot, so I have a conditioned reflex. Any car behind me makes me feel unsafe."

Rebecca stayed quiet.

Suddenly, the car behind them roared and accelerated, trying to overtake. This time, Anthony didn't let it. With two defenseless women in the car, if the car blocked the road ahead, it wouldn't be easy to turn around on this road, and they would be trapped.

But he was used to driving his own car and forgot that Winona's car was just an ordinary car worth a few thousand bucks, while the car behind was a million-dollar modified beast. The speed difference was huge, and he could only watch as the car behind brushed past them.

The rear window rolled down, and someone threw a glass bottle filled with liquid towards Winona's half-open window.

Anthony reflexively shouted, "Close the window!" when he saw the bottle.

But it was too late. The window couldn't close fast enough, and ordinary people couldn't react immediately upon hearing the command.

The person was clearly well-trained, accurately splashing the liquid into the car under such circumstances.

A sizzling sound of corrosion was heard, accompanied by the muffled groans of a woman in pain.
