Chapter 510 Why Not Say I'm Your Boyfriend
"Wait, it's you?" Winona was a bit taken aback, but she had to admit, seeing Zachary lugging those things in made her feel a bit more at ease. It was already awkward enough for Austin to witness this scene once; she really didn't want a repeat.
Zachary noticed her reaction and felt a twinge of jealousy. "If it wasn't me, were you hoping it would be Austin?"
His voice was so low that Winona didn't catch what he said, let alone the hurt in his tone. She was too distracted to ask, so she quickly ran up to Zachary, grabbed the items from his hands, and dashed into the bathroom, leaving him standing there, sulking.
After a refreshing shower, Winona stepped out and bumped into a nurse doing her rounds. Winona suspected the nurse was checking in so often because there were too few patients in the hospital, leaving her bored.
Seeing that Winona had not only showered but also washed her hair, with water dripping down her shoulders, the nurse couldn't help but scold her, "Where's your boyfriend? He hasn't come back from buying sanitary pads yet? You just had a miscarriage; you can't catch a cold. How could he let you shower and wash your hair without drying it? That's just too..."
The nurse wanted to say "irresponsible," but feared offending the patient and getting a complaint. Although this hospital offered high salaries, it was more stringent than other facilities when it came to service standards. A single complaint from a patient could result in a $500 deduction.
Thinking of this, the nurse paused and changed her tone. "He's too slow. Sit down, and I'll dry your hair for you."
Everyone present knew who she was referring to as the boyfriend.
Winona glanced at Zachary's gloomy face and explained, "He's not my boyfriend."
The nurse seemed to have lost interest in this topic. She just urged, "Sit down quickly so I can dry your hair, or you'll get headaches in the future."
"Thanks," Winona said helplessly, pointing in Zachary's direction. "I'll have my friend help me dry it."
The nurse looked in Winona's direction. When the nurse came in, she had seen someone sitting there. How could she not notice such a handsome man? But the man had been expressionless earlier, and now his face was extremely gloomy.
The nurse was so scared that her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly turned and left.
Zachary took the hairdryer and started drying Winona's hair, still bothered by the nurse's assumption that Austin was Winona's boyfriend. Although Winona had explained, the nurse clearly didn't believe it. "Why didn't you say I was your boyfriend?" Zachary asked.
Winona, feeling drowsy from the warm air, was almost lulled to sleep by Zachary's fingers gently brushing her scalp. She propped her chin on her hand and half-closed her eyes. She remarked, "Then everyone would know Mr. Ramsey is dating me. It's bad enough you look alike, but liking the same woman? Do you think anyone would believe that? Your identity would definitely be exposed."
Zachary pursed his lips in silence. Although he knew Winona's concerns were valid, he still felt a bit frustrated.
His frustration wasn't directed at Winona or Austin but at himself. He knew that in times like these, he couldn't afford to be impatient. The person behind the scenes hadn't shown their face yet, and Zachary didn't even know their identity. One wrong move could ruin everything. The hairdryer buzzed, making it hard to talk. Winona soon drifted off to sleep.
Her chin rested on her folded hands, eyes closed, with her long lashes casting shadows on her face.
A few minutes later, Zachary checked her hair to make sure it was dry before putting down the hairdryer. He bent down, picked her up, and laid her on the bed, pulling the blanket over her.
His fingers gently brushed Winona's cheek, his eyes filled with affection.
Winona felt ticklish, turned over, and buried her face in the blanket to avoid his touch.
Seeing her childlike behavior, Zachary smiled. The room was air-conditioned, and he was afraid she might suffocate, so he pulled the blanket down a bit.
Zachary sat by the bed, looking down at Winona's slightly flushed cheeks. Afraid of waking her, he didn't make any other movements. Perhaps seeing her sleep so soundly, or maybe because the room was so warm, Zachary soon felt drowsy himself.
Lately, he had been busy with the Ramsey Group's affairs and discussing new projects for the Bailey Group with Samuel and the others. Juggling both tasks had exhausted him. Finally, with a moment to relax, the accumulated fatigue washed over him.
Zachary didn't know when he fell asleep, but when he woke up, Winona was nestled in his arms, her cheeks flushed from the warmth, looking like a ripe peach, tempting him to take a bite.
Zachary lowered his head and gently kissed her forehead.
Winona's skin was smooth and soft, like fine silk.
In her sleep, Winona felt a tickle on her forehead and rubbed it, waking up in the process.
She opened her eyes to see Zachary's face up close. No matter how good-looking someone was, seeing them so unexpectedly could be startling.
She was so startled that she scrambled backward, putting a considerable distance between herself and Zachary.
The hospital bed wasn't narrow, but Winona was already close to the edge. Her sudden movement almost made her fall off. If Zachary hadn't been paying attention and quickly grabbed her waist to pull her back, she would have ended up on the floor.
Winona, still shaken, didn't know if it was from Zachary's scare or the near fall. She exclaimed, "You almost scared me to death! Why were you staring at me instead of sleeping?"
She patted her chest, got up from the bed, checked the sheets to make sure they were clean, and then headed to the bathroom.
It was already evening, and the sky outside was completely dark. Dreamopolis's winter sky seldom featured stars, and being distant from the city, the absence of neon lights cast the sky into complete darkness.
Winona had slept all afternoon and felt sore all over, with no trace of sleepiness left.
Zachary, browsing a food delivery app, asked, "What do you want to eat?"
"I want to go downstairs to eat," Winona said, stretching her stiff shoulders and neck. "I've been lying down all afternoon, and I'm sore all over."
Zachary frowned, trying to persuade her. "It's cold outside, and you're in a special period. If you catch a cold, you'll get stomach cramps."
When Zachary held her earlier, her hands and feet were cold, and it took a long time to warm them up. He had seen the hand warmers Austin bought and had looked up information online.
The search results suggested that she needed to take good care of her body, or she might suffer from menstrual cramps in the future.
