Chapter 394 Foolish Act of Spite
Zachary leaned in, "I heard the adopted son of Horizon Enterprises deeply loved his girlfriend. When a powerful figure harassed her, he severely beat the man, causing a major scandal. He was supposed to be sentenced, but the heir of Horizon Enterprises used her connections to settle the matter. Later, he was forced to marry her and kept his ex-girlfriend as his mistress."
Winona was all ears, so Zachary kept going, even though he was running out of story. With a shrug, he added, "But hey, these are just rumors. Only they know the real deal."
"Forced? Please," Winona scoffed. "He just wanted her money. The guy's a total sleazeball and doesn't want anyone talking about it."
Zachary went quiet.
"So, what's this got to do with Abigail being a problem?"
"The guy must have used ruthless methods to secure his position as CEO of Horizon Enterprises as an adopted son. There's no way he would tolerate his mistress being with another man."
"But it's all just guesswork. Maybe she's just a regular person having a rough time and looking for a way out. Austin might be a jerk, but he's good-looking and loaded. He was driving a ten-million-dollar car. Maybe she was just into him."
Winona didn't say anything.
Even though she wasn't sure, she still sent Zachary's theories to Austin.
Zachary, standing right next to her, peeked at the text. She was always looking out for Austin, like she was scared he'd get hurt.
Feeling a bit jealous, Zachary's leg, where the snake had bitten him, started to throb. "You promised to buy me a wallet, remember? Still waiting on that."
Winona had almost forgotten. "Who even uses wallets anymore? You can do everything with your phone. Cards are practically useless now."
Zachary's voice was rough, "You never offered me anything else. And if I hadn't found out you gave Matthew a wallet, you probably wouldn't have thought of giving me one."
Winona paused.
She realized she hadn't really given Zachary anything. He didn't need anything, and they barely had any chances. Their relationship was already rocky, and apart from family holidays, they hardly saw each other.
"I bring you food, but you never eat it. If I give you gifts, it's just wasting money and making me look dumb. If you throw it away, should I pick it up or not? Picking it up is embarrassing, but leaving it is a waste."
Zachary stayed silent. He knew he was being difficult.
Winona felt more justified the more she talked. "Did you really deserve anything back then?"
Zachary opened his mouth, then after a few seconds, muttered, "Sorry."
He had explained before that he was jealous because she made Matthew a homemade meal and just got takeout for him. But looking back, he realized his childish sulking was pretty dumb. "I'll get you a gift. Let's hit the mall. The store manager called a few days ago about some new arrivals from the brands you like."
Only Zachary could turn a request for a gift into an offer and still be so cautious about it.
At the mall.
Zachary led Winona straight to the women's clothing section upstairs. When women shopped, they usually didn't show any anger; any frustration would wait until after the shopping was done.
Just before they went in, Zachary got a call and motioned for her to go ahead without him.
The sales associate discreetly checked out Winona's outfit. It wasn't any brand name, but she was beautiful and had a good vibe. Even if she couldn't afford their stuff, who doesn't like a pretty face? So she greeted her warmly, "Hello, these are our new arrivals. Feel free to try anything on."
Winona picked out two items. "Do you have these in my size?"
The sales associate glanced at them and said, "Yes, but you'll have to wait a moment. I'll get them from the stockroom."
"Okay, thanks," Winona said, pulling out her phone to send a picture to Rebecca and text her.
Winona: [They have new arrivals. Want me to grab you something?]
After being friends for so long, they didn't need to be explicit.
So whenever they wanted to buy something for each other, they'd ask first to avoid wasting money on something the other didn't like.
The sales associate had just taken a few steps when a colleague stopped her. The colleague glanced in Winona's direction and whispered, "You don't need to be so attentive to her; she can't afford designer brands. People who come in and start taking pictures are usually just showing off our brand. This one clearly can't afford it. Look at her clothes; they're probably three for a hundred dollars at a street stall. Just let her try on the available sizes. If she decides to buy, then go get it from the stockroom."
"Isn't that a bit rude?"
"Suit yourself. I'm just giving you a heads-up. If you want to waste your time, go ahead. She'll probably pick a bunch for you to find."
Before she could finish, another customer walked in.
Dressed head-to-toe in designer brands, clearly someone who wasn't short on cash. The colleague quickly pushed the sales associate aside and went to greet the new customer herself.
Winona was unaware of their conversation. After picking out a dress for Rebecca and just about to take a picture, a hand pressed down on the hanger. "I'll take this dress."
Winona only noticed the hand and was momentarily stunned before recognizing the familiar voice.
She looked up along the arm and, sure enough, saw Eva. A man stood beside her, not particularly handsome but not ugly either. That man had the aura of a spoiled rich kid. Because he was tall, he had a slight hunch.
The sales associate beamed and snatched the dress from Winona's hand. "Sorry, this dress is already sold."
Winona said, "I like all the clothes here. Why don't you buy the whole store?"
"Don't try to provoke me. This amount of money is nothing to me."
The sales associate's eyes lit up instantly, already calculating her commission for the month. "Miss, would you like..."
Eva turned her head and snapped at the sales associate, "Get lost! Who asked for your opinion?"
Winona had no time to watch her throw a tantrum. She was about to turn and leave when Eva redirected her anger at her.
Eva said in a furious tone, "Why didn't you answer my call?"
