Chapter 637 I Am Waiting for Him

Maeve's hands were clenched tightly on the table, her face a mix of conflict and hesitation. "Winona, you should ask Mr. Bailey. That time I gave him a massage, it was just because he wasn't feeling well, and I happened to know some special techniques from my teacher. But I'm not really familiar with Mr. Bailey's health condition."

"Is that so?" Winona drawled. She had come to ask Maeve partly because of her profession and partly because she thought Maeve might know something since she was helping Zachary with massages. "I'll ask him tonight then."

She looked quite disappointed, her smile even a bit forced.

Maeve noticed and couldn't help but feel a bit envious. "You and Mr. Bailey have such a good relationship."

"Yeah."

Winona smiled at her but didn't continue the conversation. Besides health, she didn't want to discuss anything about Zachary with Maeve.

The café was filled with soft music. Winona absentmindedly stirred her coffee, watching the cream dissolve into the dark liquid, thinking about how to get the information she wanted from Maeve.

Maeve sighed, "It's really enviable."

Hearing the longing in her voice, Winona casually asked, "Do you have someone you like?"

"Yes," Maeve's face lit up with a shy and sweet expression, "but he doesn't like me that much yet. I'm waiting for him."

She said this while looking at Winona. With a woman's intuition and years of Rebecca's lessons on certain "innocent" women, Winona's heart tightened. "Maybe you should try liking someone else."

"I can't. I've liked him for many years," Maeve said, and Winona's suspicion that she liked Zachary eased. Then Maeve added, "He's very outstanding and even saved me once."

The two weren't very close, so the atmosphere became awkward when no one spoke.

They were sitting by the window, and the sunlight was a bit too warm. Maeve's phone rang, breaking the awkward silence. She apologized and answered the call in front of Winona.

After a few words, she hung up and explained, "It was the police. There was a break-in at our place last night, and they were calling for routine inquiries."

This was also why she agreed to have coffee with Winona. She wanted to know if the person last night was sent by her. First, she enthusiastically picked her up from the hospital, sent her home, then invited her to a party, and then there was a break-in.

It was too much of a coincidence not to be suspicious.

After all, anyone with a bit of money wouldn't choose to live in a damp, rat-infested basement. Stealing from there wouldn't even cover the gas money for the trip.

But Maeve was disappointed. When she mentioned it, Winona's eyes didn't waver. "You should be more careful these days. Keep valuable items with you. Even though people living in basements don't have much money, there might still be something worth stealing. And because the losses are small and there's no surveillance, the police usually don't investigate thoroughly."

She even shared tips on how to hide things in a basement.

Maeve was silent.

"Thanks a lot."

After finishing their coffee, Winona was about to suggest they grab a bite to eat when Zachary called, almost right on cue. "Where are you?"

"Out." She didn't mention she was with Maeve.

Zachary paused for a moment. "I'm hungry."

Winona had lived with him long enough to understand the underlying meaning. Since he didn't say it directly, she pretended not to understand, just to annoy him. "Didn't Dylan order food for you?"

"His order isn't good."

Impossible.

She could bet that Dylan knew Zachary's preferences better than his own mother and would always ask if he wanted to order food on time.

"Then pick something yourself. As long as it's not too outrageous, you can get anything you want."

On the other end, Zachary was probably annoyed by her response. He didn't speak for a while, and his breathing even got heavier. After a long silence, just when Winona thought he might hang up without saying anything, he spoke again. "I fell this morning, and my leg still hurts. Are you really going to leave your injured fiancé alone?"

It was rare for Zachary to express his grievances, and it was quite amusing.

If it weren't for the fact that someone else was around, Winona would have teased him a bit more. "What do you want to eat?"

Zachary named a restaurant. "Order your favorite dishes."

Winona didn't know the place, so she looked it up and found it was nearby, just a five-minute walk. "Okay."

She was about to hang up when he added, "And bring me a coffee."

She wanted to say there was a coffee machine at the office, but since she was already at a café, it wasn't much trouble to bring one. "What do you want?"

"The same as you."

Winona was silent.

She carried the takeout into Zachary's office. He was working on some documents, his jacket hanging neatly on a coat rack, and his shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

Hearing the door open, he instinctively looked up. Seeing Winona, his previously serious face broke into a smile.

Zachary put down his pen and quickly walked over to her, taking the takeout from her hands and placing it on the table. "Didn't I tell you to stay away from her?"

Winona didn't ask how Zachary knew she was with Maeve. "Maeve said her place was broken into last night. Was it your people?"

Zachary didn't hide it. "Yes."

"Did you find any clues?"

"I told you, I'll handle Maeve's situation. You don't need to worry or get involved," Zachary said, pinching her cheek. "Use that time to think about the question I asked you this morning."

"What question?" This morning, he had fallen and couldn't get up. Winona had only paid attention to his leg and didn't notice any questions.

Zachary smiled and repeated his morning question. "If I behave, how will you reward me? You didn't say anything and just walked away. It's been a whole morning. Have you thought about it?"

Although they lived together, they had been too busy and cautious due to his condition, avoiding any intimacy.

The last time they were close was in Aetheria.
