Chapter 349 Never Give Him A Gift

Brandon didn't know that Zachary and Winona had already divorced. Seeing them together, he naturally assumed they were still married.

Matthew corrected him, "Brandon, they are already divorced."

Embarrassed, Brandon turned to Matthew and snapped, "Forget it. Just stay in the hospital. I'll go back and keep your aunt company. Where's that wallet? I'll throw it away for you on my way down."

Matthew pressed his lips and refused, "No."

"Is it that precious? A gift from someone special?" Brandon asked.

"Yes," Matthew replied.

Brandon was about to leave, but his refusal piqued his interest. His nephew, though gentle and courteous, had always had poor luck with women. Brandon hadn't seen him in a relationship for years. "When did this happen? Never mind. If you get a chance, bring her back to show the family. Your mom is worried about your marriage."

Matthew looked up, his gaze falling on Winona. He was naturally gentle, and even looking at a lamppost, he seemed affectionate. Now that feelings were involved, he appeared even more tender. "As long as she's willing, anytime," said Matthew.

When Matthew's gaze met Winona's, Zachary stepped forward to stand before her. He knew Matthew had no good intentions. If he had known, he would have left him to fend for himself in the hospital.

Their eyes met, and tension filled the air.

Brandon didn't notice the tension. After greeting Zachary, he left.

As soon as Brandon left, Zachary's face darkened. He spread his hands and asked, "Where's the wallet?"

Matthew leaned against the headboard, his hand emerging from the blanket holding a black wallet. It was a very ordinary style, not a branded item. It looked new on the outside, but the design showed it had some years on it.

Zachary glanced at Winona behind him, his voice filled with obvious resentment, "Did you give it to him?"

Winona had indeed given Matthew a wallet. She bought it with her first paycheck the summer after high school graduation, partly for his birthday and partly to thank him for being good to her. But men's wallets all looked similar, and she wasn't sure if this was the one she had given him.

Seeing her silence, Zachary understood. The more he looked at the wallet in Matthew's hand, the more he disliked it, wishing he could snatch it and throw it in the trash.

With a sullen face, Zachary said, "You never gave me a wallet."

Actually, she had never given him anything, nor celebrated his birthday. On the contrary, she had bought one for another old man right in front of Zachary. That man was hunched over, and Winona, for some reason, had given him a wallet.

Thinking of this, Zachary remembered Frank.

'Could it be that Winona really preferrs older men? As psychology suggests, a lack of fatherly love?' he thought.

Winona raised an eyebrow and gave him a cold smile, "You never come home for your birthday. Even if I wanted to give you something, there would be no chance, right?"

Zachary fell silent.

He had been righteously accusing her of not caring about him, hoping to use the opportunity to make some demands, like getting back together or even remarrying. However, her response left him speechless.

She had never given him a gift, and in the end, it was his own fault.

The more Zachary thought about it, the worse he felt. He turned to Matthew with a particularly hostile look. Matthew smiled and defensively tucked the wallet back under the blanket, saying, "It seems that you are not that important to her."

His words hurt Zachary, especially with the wallet as a comparison, and the hurt was evident.

Zachary squinted his eyes, glaring at Matthew with fiery anger.

Winona quickly pulled him back, afraid he might impulsively snatch the wallet. Matthew was still lying in bed, and she didn't know how badly he was hurt. Even if he wasn't injured, his physique couldn't withstand a punch from Zachary.

"It's just a wallet. If you like it, I can buy one later." Winona glared at him. "Who was it that rushed to the hospital as soon as they heard Matthew was injured?"

Zachary's anger was instantly soothed. He slid his hand down and held Winona's hand, sarcastically saying to Matthew, "I'm afraid if he dies, I'll have to give a condolence gift."

Winona was speechless.

"You make so much money. Are you saving it to gild your coffin? You can't use it all. Why not find a few more young girls to serve you?" The only person in Dreamopolis who dared to mock Zachary like this was Samuel. He snorted, "You come to visit a patient and end up arguing with him. You're really talented. If you go bankrupt, you could make a comeback just with your mouth. Open a business arguing for people, and with your skills, you'd be listed on the stock market in a year."

Zachary glanced at Winona. As soon as Samuel's voice came in, she pulled her hand back as if electrocuted and kept a person's width distance from him.

'Was he that disgraceful?'

For the first time, he found Samuel so annoying.

Zachary turned around with a sullen face. Seeing Samuel's face, he couldn't help but frown, "Did Julia abuse you?"

After all, in Dreamopolis, few people dared to lay a hand on him.

Samuel had a bruise on his forehead and a bit of a bruise on his mouth. He placed the fruit basket he brought on the bedside table, "No, I accidentally fell."

'What kind of difficult position could cause such a fall?'

Zachary sneered but didn't expose him.

Matthew's injury didn't seem too serious. After Samuel arrived, Zachary and Winona left. The room was small, and with so many people, it felt suffocating.

Sophie hadn't left yet. She first looked at Zachary, then at Winona, and cautiously said, "Winona, can I have a word with you?"

They walked a few steps away.

Sophie glanced in Zachary's direction, making sure he couldn't hear, then said, "Winona, Matthew fell because he was trying to retrieve the wallet you gave him. There were no railings around the pit, and it was quite deep. The workers advised him not to, but he said it was something you gave him."

With that, she ran off.

She didn't know the emotional entanglements between them, but Matthew had been good to them. Now that he was injured trying to retrieve the wallet, she had to let Winona know.

Although she had already learned this in the room, Winona was still stunned. When she shook off her reverie and returned to her senses, Zachary was already behind her, "What did she say to you?"
