Chapter 312 A Fire Burning Inside
Winona couldn't figure out Anthony and wasn't sure if he was on board or not. She shot Zachary a confused look, hoping he'd clear things up.
Zachary tossed his phone onto the coffee table. "Go to bed. He agreed."
Hearing that, Winona finally relaxed, a small smile creeping onto her face.
With her mission accomplished, she turned to leave the room.
Zachary grabbed her arm. "Where do you think you're going?"
"Rebecca's waiting for me at the apartment. She's in a bad mood, so I'm going to talk to her. I won't be back tonight."
"Anthony will be there."
"They're not close. Even if they talk, it'll be about the case. I'll wait until they're done." Rebecca had seemed really off earlier.
Zachary smirked, his tone indifferent. "She'd rather talk to Anthony about the case than be comforted by you right now. Also, you promised to stay with me tonight. Now that you've got what you wanted, are you backing out?"
"I'm not backing out. Tonight's different," Winona said through gritted teeth, raising her voice. "And I only promised to share a room with you, not to sleep with you."
Zachary chuckled lightly. "Tonight, Rebecca's in a bad mood, so you need to be with her. Tomorrow night, if Rebecca's in a bad mood, you'll need to be with her again. The night after, if anyone else is in a bad mood, you'll need to be with them too. Does that mean from now until the court case is over, you'll have friends in a bad mood every day who need you?"
He then said calmly, "I'm in a bad mood too. Stay and keep me company."
Winona, unable to free her hand from his grip, could only glare at him.
To think he had such a childish side—truly a rare sight.
Their standoff didn't last long before Rebecca texted, asking if she had left yet. Winona replied with a voice message, saying she was held up by Zachary.
Rebecca: [Then don't come over. Anthony just called me and said he's willing to take my brother's case. I'm going over to discuss it with him now.]
Rebecca: [Winona, thank you. Also, please thank Mr. Bailey for me.]
She wasn't stupid. Anthony's sudden change of heart were definitely due to Zachary.
With one hand occupied, Winona struggled to reply to the message. Finally, she managed to send it and then tugged at the hand Zachary was still holding. "I'm not going out. Let go. I need to sleep."
Zachary seemed a bit disappointed, sighed lightly, and released his grip.
Winona lay back on the bed, turned off the light, and the room, with its blackout curtains, became pitch dark.
She wrapped herself in the blanket like a cocoon, pulling her pajamas inside. After a while, she finally changed her clothes.
In the darkness, Zachary lay flat on the sofa, staring at the ceiling shrouded in darkness. The distinguished Mr. Bailey was sleeping on a small sofa in the bedroom for the first time, and he was already furious. The rustling sounds Winona made as she moved around only fueled his anger.
He suddenly sat up from the sofa, making such a commotion that Winona also sat up in surprise. "What are you doing?"
"Changed my clothes."
On May 17, the Turner family's banquet was held at a private estate in the suburbs. The large parking lot was filled with luxury cars, and even the less expensive ones had eye-catching license plates.
Winona sat in the car, touching up her makeup in the mirror.
According to Eva, this banquet was mainly to help her build connections as Mrs. Bailey. The two families were already discussing the marriage, although it was likely a lie. However, Lydia would probably attend the banquet.
After divorcing Zachary, she hadn't visited the Bailey family estate to avoid suspicion. Thinking about Lydia's kindness and her health, Winona felt particularly guilty.
After handing the invitation to the security guard at the entrance, he handed her a room key. "Your resting room is 2018. If you get tired during the banquet, you can go there to rest."
Winona took the key. "Thank you."
The same went for the others nearby.
It seemed the Turner family had arranged this to ensure their guests wouldn't get too tired.
The banquet hall was large, filled with men and women in suits and dresses. Besides a few familiar faces often seen in the news, Winona didn't recognize anyone and couldn't tell who were guests and who were from the Turner family.
Eva, the star of the banquet, was surrounded by several girls, chatting and laughing. They were clearly close friends.
Winona didn't go up to greet her. She didn't believe Eva had invited her just to show off her status as a Turner and make her feel inferior. There must be another agenda.
Until she figured out Eva's intentions, she decided not to act rashly.
But Eva had already seen her and was walking over. She warmly took Winona's hand. "Winona, come on, I'll introduce you to my cousin, Ian. He's a popular star, so be careful when you meet him. If the media catches it, it won't be good for you."
Winona had almost forgotten about the idol she used as an excuse. Eva's reminder brought it back to her mind. "In that case, let's not. If we're photographed, it could bring him negative attention."
Eva replied, "It's fine. I've already told him to wait in a secluded spot. No one goes there, so there won't be any reporters."
Winona had no interest in her cousin. Hearing it was a secluded spot made her even less inclined to go.
She was thinking of an excuse to refuse. However, fans should be eager to meet their idols, no matter how difficult it was.
Her current persona was that of a die-hard fan of Ian, and she had to maintain that image.
While Winona was still thinking of an excuse, Eva suddenly let go of her hand, straightened the wrinkles on her dress, and nervously said, "Oh! There's Lydia, my future mother-in-law. I must go to her. Hang tight here, and I'll have a waiter escort you."
She had spent a lot of effort to please Lydia recently, finally earning a few compliments. But Lydia rarely went out, and their previous meetings were all meticulously planned. Today, in front of so many dignitaries, she had to perform well to show Lydia that she was better than Winona, the bankrupt socialite with no background.
Eva sweetly called out, "Mrs. Bailey."
Lydia, however, ignored her and focused on Winona behind her. She walked over. "Sorry, Miss Turner, I see my daughter-in-law. Excuse me."
Hearing the term "daughter-in-law," Eva couldn't control her expression. Her face puffed up in anger, looking like a pufferfish!
