Chapter 554 Sleeping with Her Every Day
Rebecca was getting more and more frustrated. She thought Anthony was incredibly stubborn, the kind of person who wouldn't budge no matter what. Despite her strong protests, he refused to let her leave, and in the end, she had no choice but to stay.
With the standoff continuing, Rebecca spent the night on the couch in Anthony's office.
She wasn't going to suffer alone, though. Since there was no separate rest area in the office, she took over the only three-seater couch, leaving Anthony with nowhere to sleep. He ended up spending the night reviewing documents.
Rebecca glanced at Anthony, unable to hide her smugness. Let's see who can outlast whom, she thought.
Anthony, with his usual stoic expression, showed no signs of fatigue except for the faint dark circles under his eyes. He was discussing the Ramsey Group's illegal fundraising with Zachary, looking as energetic as ever, as if he hadn't stayed up all night.
Anthony said, "We've found the evidence, but the money has already been moved to offshore accounts. Getting it back will be tough. Without filling this financial gap, public opinion won't be easy to calm. You're now the CEO of the Ramsey Group, and the Ramsey family can't cover the loss. With Timothy, the mastermind, dead, they're going to pin it all on you to recover some of the losses."
Zachary had already anticipated this. "I understand."
After they finished discussing business, Winona turned to Anthony. "Mr. Lewis, did you keep Rebecca here just because I asked you to watch over her?"
Anthony's gaze fell on the fuming Rebecca. "No."
Rebecca was puzzled.
"Rebecca has low emotional intelligence and is always on the run. If I didn't find an excuse to keep her around, I probably wouldn't see her for a year or more. By the time she came to me, it would likely be to file for divorce."
Having been threatened with lawsuits by Anthony several times before, Rebecca had learned to avoid him whenever possible. After witnessing the tumultuous divorce between Winona and Zachary, she was even more wary of Anthony.
No way was she going to develop any feelings for him. If they ever broke up, it would be a nightmare.
Rebecca straightened her back. "Divorce? What are you talking about? Who's getting divorced? You're the one who's going to get divorced."
Anthony chuckled and added slowly, "You always miss the point. No wonder your grades were always at the bottom."
It's one thing to criticize herself, but hearing it from Anthony, a top student, felt like an insult. Rebecca was furious. She could tolerate many things, but not be called a poor student.
When she received her acceptance letter from Dreamopolis University, her mom bragged to everyone about her achievement. She couldn't let Anthony tarnish her impressive record. "A poor student getting into Dreamopolis University? You must be out of your mind. But if you are, can you at least not flaunt it everywhere?"
Rebecca's voice trailed off. Okay, she admitted she was lucky, being a local and getting into the arts program. But luck was a form of skill too.
But why was Anthony looking at her with that condescending gaze?
Rebecca had misunderstood Anthony. If anyone at the law firm saw him looking at a woman with such a doting expression, they'd be shocked. The emotionless work machine actually had a soft side.
But Rebecca, clueless about relationships and biased against Anthony, said, "It's a miracle you're still single."
Anthony was speechless.
Zachary, already dealing with a headache, found Rebecca's chatter unbearable. "We've discussed everything, and the patient has been seen. Time to go."
If it weren't for these two showing up, he and Winona might have had a heart-to-heart and gotten back together. The perfect atmosphere was ruined by these two. He glared at them, wishing he could kick them out immediately.
Rebecca saw right through Zachary's thoughts. She clung to Winona, nuzzling her head against her, and provocatively raised an eyebrow at Zachary. "Winona, it's been so long since we had a sleepover. When you're free, come and stay at my place for a night. I have so much to tell you."
Winona chuckled and gently pushed Rebecca's head back. "Don't tease him. The doctor said he had a head injury and internal injuries. He can't get too emotional."
"All you care about is your husband, not your friends."
Rebecca rolled her eyes at Winona, but it was clear she was just complaining, not angry.
Zachary smirked at Rebecca and pressed the call button on the bedside table.
Rebecca was speechless.
Before she could figure out Zachary's intention, a nurse walked in.
Zachary said calmly, "This person is too noisy. She's giving me a headache."
Hearing that the patient was uncomfortable, the nurse immediately started ushering people out. "The patient needs rest. Everyone except the family caregiver, please leave."
Rebecca was stunned.
Damn it.
Zachary was so cunning.
"Zachary, have you no shame? Jealous of a best friend? I hope your jealousy eats you alive. Just wait, I'll make your life miserable. I'll complain about you to Winona every day, pointing out all your flaws. Just you wait," Rebecca was half-dragged, half-carried out of the room by Anthony, her voice fading. "Winona and I used to sleep together every night. If you have the guts, go back in time and stop me."
Winona was speechless.
With Rebecca gone, the room finally quieted down.
Zachary looked at Winona with a pained expression. "You used to sleep with her every night?"
Winona and Rebecca had shared a dorm room in college, even bunk beds. After graduation, they rented a place together. The Davis family was wealthy and wanted to buy Rebecca a place, but Winona was too poor to afford rent. Rebecca, not wanting to hurt her pride, pretended to have a falling out with her family and rented a small, old one-bedroom apartment with Winona, sharing a bed.
But they didn't live there long before Winona married Zachary.
Winona said, "Are you serious? Rebecca is my best friend. Are you jealous of a woman?"
Women can be lesbians too.
But Zachary kept that thought to himself. He held Winona's hand and changed the subject. "Winona, we didn't finish our conversation earlier."
