Chapter 50 Zachary Goes Crazy Late at Night
When Winona received Zachary's call at night, she had already finished preparing for bed.
She had stayed up for several nights in a row, finally managing to get some early sleep tonight, but this call disturbed her peace. Naturally, her tone wasn't pleasant. "What are you doing so late at night?"
"Open the door."
After saying just that, the man hung up the phone. Winona's retort of "Are you crazy?" got stuck in her throat and couldn't come out.
Winona snorted and threw her phone aside.
Lying down to sleep, Winona didn't know whether Zachary had guessed her mind or his patience was exhausted. As soon as she closed her eyes, she heard a loud noise coming from the security door!
"Click," it was the neighbor's door opening.
The neighbor was an elderly person whom Winona had seen a few times, but he was not very talkative.
Sure enough, as soon as the elderly person opened the door, he started cursing at Zachary, "What are you knocking on in the middle of the night? Don't you let people sleep? Do you have no decency as a man?!"
The soundproofing in this ordinary commercial housing was average, and the elderly person had a high-pitched voice. Winona could hear everything clearly even from the innermost bedroom.
She didn't hear Zachary speak. It was probably the first time the prodigal son experienced something like this, and he was taken aback?
The elderly person said, "No more knocking, or I will call the police and report you for disturbing the peace!"
Zachary's voice was calm but convincing, "My wife lives here. She has severe depression, manic episodes, and even schizophrenia. When she has an episode, she either wants to commit suicide or harm others. I made her angry today, and I called her for half an hour, but she didn't answer..."
He didn't continue speaking, but the elderly person imagined a series of bloody scenes. He slapped his thigh, "So, it's a lunatic. You better break down the door and get her out, or I'll call the police. She might die inside…"
Before he even finished speaking, Winona opened the door with an ugly face, "Come in."
That bastard Zachary, how can she continue living here with the labels of suicide and murder?
A faint hint of a smile appeared at the corner of Zachary's lips. He calmly entered the room, his face showing no sign of hidden malice.
Winona frowned impatiently, "What's the matter?"
With no lights on in the entrance, Zachary's gaze fell on the woman's symmetrical and slender fingers illuminated by the living room lights. "Don't you have anything to explain to me proactively?"
"Do I need to explain anything to you?" Winona yawned, her eyes glassy, clearly exhausted. "If there's something, just get to the point."
Zachary's eyes turned cold as he held onto her hand against her will. Her fingers were slender and beautiful, with a thin callus on the pads of her thumb and index finger.
Winona couldn't pull her hand back, and she frowned unhappily. She recalled the incident with Matthew's check on the morning after her birthday banquet.
Zachary knew?
At the same time, she felt a subtle pain from the hand held by the man.
Winona's heart tightened, and she instinctively denied, "I didn't accept his money."
It wasn't that she was afraid Zachary would actually break her finger, but she was worried that the divorce would become even more complicated.
Zachary's words were filled with irony, "Why should I believe you? If you didn't ask him for money, why would he give it to you for no reason?"
"Believe it or not, it's up to you. And even if I did ask him, it would be a loan. It'll be paid back."
There is an essential difference between asking for money and borrowing money, and the thoughts that Zachary came up with are undoubtedly more despicable. If she doesn't refute him now, his next line will probably be something along the lines of selling herself, an insult of that kind.
Zachary's gaze fell upon the woman's face, his eyes dark and heavy...
Winona didn't know what he was thinking at this moment, but she sensed an unusual and intense unease.
Winona took a step back and withdrew her hand. "If I had taken Matthew's money, I would have slapped it in your face long ago, and you would be coming with me tomorrow morning to handle the formalities."
This was the most powerful explanation, and she had indeed wanted to do just that, if only she had the money now.
There was a faint throbbing on Zachary's forehead; he was provoked by Winona's final words. He took a deep breath, fearing that he couldn't control himself from strangling this woman.
"Don't meet Matthew again in the future."
Winona raised an eyebrow. Was he ordering her?
Whether or not she would meet Matthew was really not her decision. It wasn't her intention to meet Matthew on her own in the previous few occasions; it was just a coincidence that they always ran into each other in the same place. But if it weren't for Zachary, such coincidences would be greatly reduced.
"He is in your circle, and if you divorce me, I will completely cut off my connection with him, and we won't be able to meet each other at all."
New York is so big, it's not easy to frequently bump into someone.
Zachary chuckled, leaned slightly, and effortlessly trapped the woman between the wall and himself. "Are you setting me up?"
"I'm stating a fact," Winona, not used to his proximity, frowned and turned her face away. "I'm going to sleep. If you don't have anything else, please leave."
His tall and well-built figure towered over Winona, giving her significant pressure, especially in this posture.
She felt like Zachary would kiss her any second now... Although such thoughts were a bit presumptuous, he had indeed done such a thing before!
Zachary could see the resistance on the woman's face, his deep gaze shifting from displeasure. "Regarding the cooperation we discussed last time, the person in charge from the other company has come to New York. Accompany me there, and the three billion dollars in debt will be settled."
Winona pulled a cold smile without any expression. "Do you think I'll still believe your words?"
Last time at the Night Club, she had heard his conversation with Samuel. Zachary wanted to secure this cooperation, but it was just a matter of a few words.
As she spoke, she frowned and tried to push him away, clearly showing her disdain for his closeness.
Zachary's expression turned even uglier due to the anger that was stirred up by Matthew's three billion dollars, even more so than before.
His long hand gripped the woman's waist. "There hasn't been a formal contract signed yet, so unexpected changes can happen anytime."
Winona rolled her eyes, completely unimpressed. What does unexpected changes have to do with her?
Splitting the assets evenly was out of the question, and now she even owed three billion dollars. She would be delighted if he went bankrupt!
Zachary squinted, what kind of expression was this? So daring!
"You asked another man for money behind my back. I'm in a bad mood right now. Give me one minute to agree to my proposal and let me calm down."
Winona seemed to have heard the biggest joke ever. Make him calm down?
"Zachary, do you need me to take you to the neurology department to have your brain checked? You're really being unreasonable."
