Chapter 265 See You as a Fool
Winona looked up.
This street, which was located behind Eirondia Avenue, was sparsely populated with its unattractive shops. Despite the wide street, these two individuals stood right in front of her. Obviously, there were here for her.
After holding her breath all day, Winona finally relaxed a bit and asked, "Who are you?"
"Miss. Sullivan, our boss would like to see you."
Thanks to that No Face, as soon as she heard the word "boss," Winona automatically pictured his face. "I don't know you, and I don't know who your boss is."
She finished speaking and turned to leave.
The man was about to grab her, but a group of tourists appeared not far away, about a dozen people. He retracted his hand and smiled apologetically, "Sorry for the confusion. It's Mrs. Hall who sent us to invite you. She and your mother were old friends. She saw someone resembling you at the night market last night, but she was in a hurry, afraid of mistaking. She had someone investigate and confirm your identity later, so we hurried to invite you."
Winona lit up at the mention of her old friend's name like a fool. "You know Mrs. Hall?"
"We are working for Mrs. Hall."
Winona hesitated a bit. Seeing her easily swayed, they began to praise how much Mrs. Hall had missed her over the years. Painfully aware of her mother's passing, Ms. Hall yearned to have Winona by her side, but she didn't know what to do.
If Winona hadn't known Mrs. Hall only through a few brief encounters, exchanging polite greetings and barely any conversation, she might have believed their insincere words.
She took out her phone, double-checked the message she received at noon, and said, "Then I'll go see Mrs. Hall. After all these years, I've missed her, too."
The car was parked nearby. Winona got in with them. "Has Mrs. Hall been in Mode City all these years?"
"Yes."
"No wonder I haven't seen her since then. Have you been by Mrs. Hall's side all this time?" Winona acted like someone curious about everything and inexperienced in the world. When she got into the car, she even touched the genuine leather seats, looking envious and wistful. "Why did Mrs. Hall want to see me? Is there something important?"
The man saw the envy in her eyes and felt disdain for Winona.
He thought, 'What a vain woma, dreaming of marrying into a wealthy family! With just a few words from others, she follows along like a fool, oblivious to the dangers ahead.'
Just the thought made him, a grown man, quite fearful, unable to catch his breath.
The investigation revealed Winona was the wife of someone from the Bailey family, but she looked so cheap. No wonder she was abandoned.
But because of this, his guard against Winona relaxed a bit.
Winona was still in shock, completely oblivious to the disdain in his eyes. "Mrs. Hall is so wealthy in Mode City. Why did she go to Dreamopolis back then? My mom said she wanted to settle down and start a family in Dreamopolis."
The man was already put off by her foolish demeanor. Her incessant questions, far from intriguing, only served to grate on his nerves, adding to his irritation. But they were still on Eirondia Avenue, surrounded by many people. He couldn't expose himself or cause a scene, so he had to answer her questions impatiently.
Winona's questions required no thought and didn't involve any secrets, such as how old Mrs. Hall was this year, what she liked, or if they should bring a gift.
At first, he tried to stay alert but eventually found it boring and answered on autopilot.
Winona asked, "After my mom gave that painting to Mrs. Hall, something happened shortly after. Was her death related to that painting?"
"You said your mom returned the painting to Mrs. Hall."
Mid-sentence, he was suddenly pushed by the person in the driver's seat. The man glanced at him. "Focus on driving. Why are you talking so much in front of the boss?"
As soon as he heard the word 'boss', the man fell silent, breaking out in a cold sweat.
He turned to look at Winona, suspecting she was deliberately trying to trap him with her words.
But Winona in the backseat looked innocent. "Focus on driving for now. We can talk later when the car stops."
He thought, 'Alright, it wasn't a trap, just pure foolishness. She couldn't even detect the hidden meanings in others' words. What is she wearing on her chest? Covered in diamonds, shaped like a duck, it's both tacky and ugly. she has no taste.'
They fell silent. Winona gazed out the window, trying to memorize the route. She glanced at her phone, no signal.
After they left the city, the car headed towards the outskirts. At first, they could still see other vehicles, but later, it took a long stretch of road to encounter another vehicle.
Passing a road sign, Winona squinted. "Aren't we heading towards Evercres? Where are we?"
The person in front's phone rang. He checked the caller ID, immediately put on his earphones, answered a few times, and then hung up without revealing any information.
The man pivoted with a somber expression, remarking, "I underestimated your intelligence; you were indeed laying a trap for me."
Extending his hand, he promptly removed the unsightly duck brooch from Winona's chest. Upon closer inspection, nestled amidst the dazzling array of diamonds, he uncovered a surveillance device and a pin-sized camera.
"I intended to be gentle, but since you've decided to play games with me, I'm left with no other option," he said, reaching for Winona's hair, but she evaded.
The driver said, "Speed up. Looks like another car is coming."
"It's the accomplice this woman hired. Damn, so skilled, following us all this way on such a secluded road. I didn't even notice. If the boss hadn't been alert, we would've brought trouble back with us."
The plan faltered, leaving Winona unable to find out the "boss".
Without hesitation, Winona used her bag strap to choke the driver. She had to alert the person behind her while the man next to her pulled out a handkerchief from nowhere and covered her face.
The cabin was narrow, and she had no room to evade. Prepared, Winona held her breath, but the pungent smell still reached her nose. Soon, Winona couldn't hold on and passed out.
Before passing out, Winona saw a black car suddenly drift and block their vehicle.
The door opened, and a tall figure stepped out of the car, walking towards them.
