Chapter 555 Feeling Nauseous with Every Movement
Zachary knew he had to seize the moment while Winona was feeling sympathetic towards him and solidify their relationship before things got complicated.
But some things could only be said in the right atmosphere, and once the moment passed, it would be hard to bring it up again.
Winona felt uncomfortable under Zachary's intense gaze and let her eyes wander, landing on the neighboring hospital bed where two pairs of curious eyes were watching them.
This was a double room, and the patient in the other bed was a girl around eighteen or nineteen, accompanied by another girl of similar age. They both blushed and quickly looked away when caught eavesdropping.
Zachary was speechless.
There was no way to continue the conversation now.
With a face that screamed "I'm in a bad mood," Zachary started scrolling through the news on his phone, venting his frustration with exaggerated swipes. If the screen had eyes, it would have been poked out by now.
The news about Timothy kidnapping Zachary and detonating explosives in an apartment building had already made headlines. Despite the remote location, the commotion was too big to suppress, with police, fire trucks, and ambulances all involved.
The combination of words like "hostage," "explosives," and "detonation" was enough to capture the public's attention. Adding to the drama was the fact that the victim was the CEO of the currently hot Ramsey Group. The news had just broken and was already going viral.
Photos showed two-thirds of the apartment building collapsed, giving a sense of the dire situation.
The truth about the Ramsey Group's illegal fundraising hadn't come out yet, but the comments were overwhelmingly negative: "This is karma. How could those heartless people eat the money earned through hard work?"
"Serves them right for getting into trouble after scamming people."
"Too bad Nicholas didn't die in the explosion."
Timothy's identity hadn't been revealed yet, and netizens didn't know the relationship between the two or the backstory. They assumed it was a desperate victim of the scam seeking revenge.
"Exactly, Nicholas has done so many bad things, scamming people's hard-earned money. How many families has he ruined? And he still gets to be taken to the hospital."
"Help! I'm going to cry. Good people don't live long, but the wicked live forever. Why didn't Nicholas just die?"
"How can he sleep at night after harming so many people?"
"He's living the high life, and probably doesn't care at all. Conscience? What's that worth?"
"There are more beasts than people in this world. I curse him for having no descendants and for his whole family to die. Give me back my money."
Zachary scrolled through the comments absentmindedly, waiting for Winona to notice his bad mood and comfort him. But after a long wait with no response, he looked up to find she was gone.
Frustrated, Zachary tossed his phone onto the metal cabinet beside him, making a loud noise that startled the two girls in the room. One of them cautiously pointed to the door, "That lady went out to make a call."
Zachary was taken aback, then realized she meant Winona. He forced a polite smile, "Thanks."
Winona was calling Evander. She hadn't called earlier because Zachary was in the ICU, and visiting wouldn't have been possible. Now that he was awake, she wanted to let them know he was okay to avoid unnecessary worry.
Evander had just learned from Dylan about Nicholas's kidnapping and hospitalization and was about to call Winona when her call came through.
Evander answered quickly, "Winona, Zachary's in trouble."
Winona interrupted, "I know. Zachary's in the hospital, but he's awake and doing fine. The doctor said he can be discharged in a few days."
Hearing that Zachary was okay, Evander felt a wave of relief and dizziness. He quickly composed himself, "I'll call Lydia."
If Lydia saw the news, it would be bad. Her health had been deteriorating, and the doctor had repeatedly warned against any stress. Since the Ramsey Group's scandal broke yesterday, Evander had instructed Sarah to keep Lydia away from the TV and to call him if anything happened.
Since he hadn't received a call, Lydia probably didn't know yet.
After hanging up, Winona checked the time and went to the hospital cafeteria to get some light, patient-friendly food. When she returned to the room, the two girls were making exaggerated eye movements, glancing at Zachary's bed.
Winona found their antics amusing and turned to see Zachary sitting on the bed, looking upset with his eyes half-closed.
She walked over, "I just called Dad to let him know you're okay. He's been worried sick these past few days. He and Mom will probably come by soon. If you have any concerns and can't meet them openly, you should call them now."
Hearing that Winona had been calling Evander, Zachary's mood improved. Seeing the food she brought, he felt even softer, "I'm starving."
Zachary's eager tone betrayed no hint of his earlier frustration.
One moment he was icy, the next he was warm and sunny. The two girls were amazed at how quickly his mood changed. Such a handsome man with a lovestruck heart was truly enviable.
Winona pulled out the small table, opened the food containers, and even unwrapped a disposable spoon, placing it in Zachary's hand.
Zachary held the fork but didn't move, lying, "My hand hurts, I can't lift it."
Winona gave him a knowing look, "I saw you swiping your phone just fine earlier."
Zachary was speechless.
Caught in his lie, he didn't feel embarrassed, "I'm dizzy, moving makes me want to throw up."
Seeing Winona unmoved, Zachary hinted, "I might not be able to eat by myself."
Though she suspected he was faking, Winona took the spoon from his hand and sat by the bed to feed him.
Zachary took a bite and frowned slightly.
Winona noticed, "Is it not good?"
She hadn't eaten at the nearby restaurants before and had chosen the one with the best reviews, thinking it would be good.
Zachary pursed his lips, "It has no taste."
Winona tried a bite herself, "It's pretty good. Maybe you just don't have an appetite?"
Zachary's voice was hoarse, "Winona, can you close the curtain?"
