Chapter 499 What If I Don't Come Back
The Ramsey Group
Zachary was listening to his assistant's report when the office door suddenly swung open.
Timothy stood there, not saying a word, just staring at Zachary with dark, tired eyes. It had only been two days since they last saw each other, but Timothy looked way more worn out. His usually innocent eyes were now bloodshot from lack of sleep.
The room went dead silent.
The assistant quickly gathered the papers on the table. "Mr. Ramsey, I'll head out now."
Zachary nodded.
The assistant, feeling relieved, hurried out with the documents, keeping his head down. As he passed Timothy, he felt a chill. He was loyal to Zachary, so he knew Timothy, despite his harmless look, was actually pretty ruthless.
Sensing Timothy's bad mood, Richard sped up. It wasn't until he was far away that he felt Timothy's piercing gaze finally let up.
Timothy closed the door and walked up to Zachary. "Your assistant seems really scared of me."
Zachary was annoyed just seeing Timothy. If it weren't for him, he and Winona might have already remarried by now. Zachary had even bought the engagement ring. Now, it seemed unlikely. He wasn't sure if his status as her "intern boyfriend" still stood.
He didn't dare ask. If he didn't ask, it might still be there; if he did, it might not.
But as long as Winona didn't reject his advances, there was still a chance. Getting married because of a child wasn't out of the question. If she thought being pregnant would make her look bad in a wedding dress, they could do it sooner or get the certificate first and have the ceremony after the baby was born.
Yeah, that was a good idea. He'd have someone prepare it right away to avoid any last-minute chaos.
While Zachary was thinking about the wedding, he kept a straight face. He even casually opened a file and started chatting with Timothy. "Standing at the door staring like that, it's normal for him to be scared. Aren't you supposed to be at work? How do you have time to come over?"
Timothy replied, "I took leave."
Zachary didn't care why he wasn't at work.
Timothy continued, "A long leave."
Zachary said, "If you don't want to work, don't. The family can support you..."
"Dad wants me to go abroad." Timothy interrupted Zachary. His mood was terrible, and the deeply suppressed gloom and madness were leaking out uncontrollably, much like the lunatic in the basement who repeatedly asked if Zachary wanted to die.
Zachary wasn't entirely sure if that person was Timothy because Zachary had never seen him in person. The other party always spoke to Zachary through a door and used a voice changer. But one day, after pretending to be successfully hypnotized and waking up again, Zachary found himself lying in the bed of the villa he now lived in.
Next to the bed was Timothy, crying uncontrollably, saying in a hoarse voice, "I finally rescued you from Evander."
Even if that lunatic wasn't Timothy, the fact that he could say such things to deceive Zachary meant they were allies.Hearing that Timothy was heading abroad to meet the mastermind behind everything made Zachary's heart race, but he quickly pushed the feeling down. "Why the sudden change? You didn't mention this before."
Timothy shrugged. "Something came up last minute, and I have to go."
Zachary knew exactly why Timothy had to leave so suddenly. He had messed with the Bailey Group's new project, uncovering several moles in the process.
The person behind it was pissed, so they urgently called Timothy back.
Timothy placed his hand on Zachary's shoulder, giving it a firm squeeze. "If I don't come back, will you miss me?"
Zachary rolled his eyes. "Don't say such silly things. Dad treats us so well; why wouldn't you come back?"
Timothy sighed. "I did something to upset him. No matter how good Dad is, I'm just adopted. Without that blood relation, and having made a mistake, it's only natural to be discarded."
Zachary, trying to find an excuse to go with Timothy, frowned slightly. "I'll go back with you. If Dad wants to punish you, I'll take it for you."
Timothy looked at Zachary, his eyes showing a mix of gratitude and complex emotions. He seemed to waver but eventually shook his head firmly. "No need. I'll go alone. You have more important things to do. If Dad finds out I not only made a mistake but also dragged you along, he might despise me even more."
Zachary felt a bit disappointed but didn't push too hard, fearing Timothy might get suspicious. He would need to use some tactics to reveal the person behind it.
However, getting Timothy out of the way would be a relief. At least no one would be around to bother Zachary, and he could spend more time with Winona. He had to take this opportunity to win her back, ideally getting her to agree to remarry.
Timothy's flight was in the afternoon, and Zachary personally took him to the airport. He watched him pass through security before leaving.
Although Timothy was gone, the spies he had planted were still around. Zachary returned to the Ramsey Group and worked until after eight before leaving the office.
He drove around half the city to make sure no one was following him before heading to Winona's rented apartment.
Standing at the door, he suddenly felt a bit nervous as he raised his hand to knock. Did he hurt her this morning? She didn't seem happy when she left, not even saying goodbye. Was she still upset about his poor performance?
Zachary never thought he'd be nervous about something like this. Thinking about Winona's frown under him, he couldn't help but wonder if he was really that bad.
She was his only woman, so he didn't know if she was telling the truth or just trying to provoke him. But Winona only had him as a man, so maybe all men made women feel this way in such matters. She had no comparison, so she didn't know.
Just as he was lost in thought, the door in front of him opened.
It seemed that while they might not be in sync in bed, they were still in tune in daily life. Just as Zachary was about to knock, Winona opened the door.
Zachary's lips curled into a smile, but it froze halfway and then quickly fell.
