Chapter 211: Shouldn't Have Saved You

As long as one is not foolish, they wouldn't make the mistake of disappearing like a meat bun to a dog.
Upon hearing Carlos mention her mother's inheritance yesterday, Winona thought about it and now this happened. She picked up the business card that fell on her leg and wondered which company was able to lend such a large amount of money so quickly without even checking the borrower's background.
It was clear that it was a trap set to get her inheritance.
They couldn't even wait a few more days, so impatient.
"We're not concerned about Carlos' reputation, but yours, Mrs. Bailey. Although you're divorced, the bond between a married couple lasts a hundred days. With the vast wealth of the Bailey family, we can't just watch your ex-wife being chased by creditors until she's driven to death."
Winona coldly refused, "I don't have the money to help him repay the debt, and I have no obligation to help him either. Just go ahead and kill him."
"If Mrs. Sullivan doesn't have the money, then we'll have to make calls to your ex-husband, your mother-in-law, and your uncle and aunt."
This was a common tactic used by loan sharks to pressure the debtor by calling everyone around them, squeezing out whatever they could.
Those two were just here to inform her, and once they finished speaking, they left.
Winona was so infuriated that her hands trembled as she tried to call Carlos, but of course, she couldn't reach him. His phone was turned off.
She immediately reported to the police, accusing them of extortion and giving her statement at the police station before not caring about it anymore.
After that, she was busy every day, wishing she could live directly in her car, and she didn't have time to think about this matter.
It wasn't until a week later in the evening when Winona was driving back home. Even before she reached the front of her apartment building, a black car started tailing her. With a loud bang, she crashed into the steering wheel.
The car behind her remained motionless, and no one came out. Winona wondered if they were injured.
It wasn't too late yet, and the streets were still crowded with people, so she didn't take too many precautions. She pushed open the car door and started walking towards them, but before that, she reported to the traffic police first.
Just as Winona took a few steps forward, a business car suddenly rushed towards her, quickly screeching to a stop in front of her. The car door opened, and she was forcefully pulled inside.
The whole process took only a split second. The person driving the car was one of the men who came to find her that day. "Mrs. Sullivan, today is the deadline for repayment. Where's the money?"
Winona was squeezed between the two strong men. "I don't have the money."
"Since Mrs. Sullivan is being so stubborn, then we'll have no choice. After all, we need to make a living too. If everyone behaved like your father and didn't repay their debts, we would all starve to death."
"What about Carlos? I want to see him!"
"We came to you because we couldn't find Carlos. That jerk is really good at hiding. It's been so many days, and he's disappeared."
Winona was taken to a briefcase company and forcibly seated on a chair. "Your father told us when he borrowed money that your mother left you a substantial inheritance. I advise you not to stubbornly resist and to just return the money. We are not gentle people, and if we hurt you, it won't end well." The ice-filled water, beaded needles, and high-wattage light bulbs were all things that Winona had seen three years ago.

"I already told you, I don't have any money, but I can give you the contact information of his biological daughter." Her phone had been confiscated in the car, hoping that the police would find out about her disappearance at the accident scene.

The man did not respond, but grabbed her hair and forcefully dipped her entire head into the ice water. "Make sure the video is clear, find the contact list, send them one by one. I refuse to believe that none of them are willing to lend money. After all, she is Mr. Bailey's ex-wife, and she should know many wealthy friends."

Although Winona was prepared, she still choked. Before she could hold her breath, she was pulled up again. "Will you return the money?"

"I don't have any money."

"Damn it, you're a stubborn one. Today, I'll..."

Before he could finish his sentence, the man suddenly screamed in pain. He let go of Winona's hair and covered his lower body, his face twisted and pale from the pain. "You bitch, you dare to attack me. Hold her down for me. I'm going to kill her today!"

Winona's hand was held down by someone, and the man took a wrench from the toolbox beside him and raised it high...

Suddenly, the closed door was kicked open from the outside with a loud bang.

Zachary walked in, and the wrench had already dropped. Almost instinctively, he reached out and tightly protected Winona's hand in his palm.

The bodyguard who accompanied him kicked the man away, but even so, Zachary's knuckles were heavily injured, with a large piece of skin scraped off and blood pouring out, dripping onto Winona's wrist.

Zachary was not alone; he brought the police with him, and quickly subdued the group of criminals.

Winona's head had just been dipped in ice water, her hair was wet and dripping, her lips frozen and bruised, and her clothes were soaked from the splashing water. She trembled uncontrollably.

Zachary held the back of her head with one hand, his fingers entwined in her hair, trying to warm her up with the warmth of his palm. "Are you hurt?"

She shook her head, her throat sore from the cold water, she could barely speak. "How did you come?"

"Somebody reported that you were kidnapped, and since you had previously reported to the traffic police and your phone couldn't be reached, they contacted me."

The police came to take her statement, but Zachary raised his hand to decline. "I'm sorry, she's been frightened and soaked in ice water. When she recovers, I will take her to the police station to give a statement."
This is not quite proper, but Winona is the victim, and her testimony was just a formality. The police saw that she couldn't even speak, so they agreed not to record her testimony.

...

After giving Winona a bottle of medicine, Doctor Regal Oaks left.

Winona lowered her head and applied medicine to Zachary's hand. Her freshly washed and dried hair was very soft, falling as she lowered her head and tickling Zachary's hand.

The wound was not on the bone, but it looked very fierce. Besides the peeled skin, there was a large purple bruise around it.

Winona's voice was very low, almost inaudible. Her throat was injured, making it difficult for her to speak. She said, "Thank you."

Zachary raised an eyebrow, rarely seeing her so obedient. He wanted to playfully tease her.

But before he could say anything, Winona continued, "Last time too, thank you."

"What do you mean by last time?"

"The time with Harris. My aunt told me that you were hit by his car."

She had asked Matthew a few days ago. He said he didn't see her plea for help back then, and he didn't know who Harris was or that he had harassed her. As for her later gratitude that he didn't respond to, it was too long ago, and she couldn't remember.

Zachary leaned against the sofa, letting her apply medicine to his wound. His brow wrinkled in pain. "I saved you twice, and all you can do is say thank you?"

"What substantial gratitude do you want then?"

Zachary cast his gaze down. He could only see half of Winona's fair face. He spoke in a cold and indifferent tone, "What if I wanted you to become Mrs. Bailey again?"

Winona fell silent. After a few seconds, she said, "I can compensate you for medical expenses and emotional damages."

Even though she could barely speak, her determination to maintain her boundaries remained unaffected. Zachary's gaze fell on his injured hand, and a thick, suffocating pain engulfed his heart.

After a while, he chuckled, retracting his hand before she finished applying the medicine. "I should have known better than to save you."
