Chapter 475 No Children
The next morning, Winona woke up in her bed, feeling a bit disoriented.
She rolled over, hugged her soft quilt, and stared blankly at the gray sky outside.
It was a cloudy day, and the leaves on the trees had already started to turn yellow, rustling in the wind.
The sleeping potion had worked wonders. She had slept like a baby and woke up feeling refreshed, without the usual morning grogginess.
Suddenly, Winona sat up in bed. Last night, Zachary had held her hand, and she couldn't break free, so she fell asleep on him. How did she end up back in bed?
She tried to remember but had no recollection of it. It seemed she hadn't woken up.
She looked down, lifted the quilt, and glanced at herself. Last night, unsure if Zachary had left, Winona had changed into outdoor clothes before opening the door. But now, she was wearing pajamas, the most seductive purple silk V-neck from her wardrobe.
It was definitely Zachary who changed her clothes.
She gritted her teeth in anger, thinking of that scoundrel.
After getting up and washing, she changed into professional attire and drove to the company. In the morning, there was a high-level meeting, and Evander personally presided. As his secretary, she accompanied him throughout.
The meeting lasted quite a while. The Bailey Group had many issues recently, and Evander had been on a business trip, so many matters had piled up and were resolved together.
After the meeting, Winona returned to her office. Just as she was about to report to Evander, Dylan knocked and came in. "Miss Sullivan, Mr. Anderson is in the underground parking lot. He says he has something to discuss with you," he said.
Winona replied, "Got it." Evander had returned to Dreamopolis yesterday. If Samuel was looking for her, it must be about the paternity test results. Winona handed her notebook and documents to Dylan and said, "Please take these to Evander's office for me. I'll go down for a bit."
Samuel's car was hard to miss, parked right in the middle of the road. Winona spotted it the moment she stepped out of the elevator.
She walked over, saw that Samuel was indeed in the driver's seat, opened the back door, and got in. "Mr. Anderson."
Samuel handed her a manila envelope and said, "The paternity test results."
Although Winona already knew Nicholas was Zachary, she opened the report and took a look. Seeing the 99.9% parent-child relationship, she calmly put the report back into the envelope.
Samuel could clearly read her expression in the rearview mirror. "You knew?" he asked, his voice a mix of surprise and concern.
Last time, before he went for the test, Winona was still curious. It was surprising to see her accept the results so calmly.Winona replied, "Yeah, he told me yesterday."
Samuel snorted. He knew Zachary couldn't keep his mouth shut.
He handed her another envelope and said, "This is for you."
"What?" Winona asked, curiosity piqued. Their relationship wasn't close enough for gifts, so this made her a bit anxious.
Samuel didn't answer. Winona opened the envelope and found a house purchase contract inside. The buyer was Samuel, and it was for the apartment she currently lived in, just one floor below.
She put the contract back and said, "Mr. Anderson, this is too much. I can't accept it. Thanks, though."
His casualness in giving away a house made her uneasy.
If Winona didn't know he had no romantic interest in her and a beloved who would rather die than tarnish his reputation, she might have thought Samuel was trying to pursue her.
Samuel replied, "It's not for you; it's for the child you're carrying. Zachary mentioned he wanted his child to call me godfather. This is my token of goodwill."
Anyway, Zachary bought it. That old apartment was useless to Samuel, so he might as well give it away.
Samuel continued, "It's not a big deal, just a token to celebrate the anticipation of the child's birth. I'll give something more valuable once the baby arrives."
Winona was speechless.
Although the apartment wasn't large, its location was excellent—in the commercial center, with convenient transportation. Many people wanted to buy it but couldn't, and the price had been speculated to be millions of dollars.
However, because it was an apartment, it wasn't very convenient for family living. Most buyers used it for rental purposes, and well-decorated ones fetched high rents.
Winona remarked, "Sorry, I still can't accept it, and..." she paused, "I'm not pregnant. The pregnancy was just an excuse for the company."
Samuel raised an eyebrow and finally turned to look at her. "You're not pregnant?" he asked.
He had little curiosity about people he wasn't familiar with. The only reason he asked was that Zachary was particularly proud of this child. Zachary looked at him with a suppressed sense of pride, as if saying, "I have a child, and you haven't even caught up with your wife."
Now that Samuel thought about it, it wasn't pride at all; it was sheer stupidity.
If Zachary knew that the child he was counting on was just a tool for Winona to secure her position in the company, he would be furious.
Winona replied, "Yes."
Samuel responded, "Alright then."
He didn't force Winona to accept the apartment. After she got out of the car, he drove away.
He wanted to see if Zachary would still be so confident about winning Winona back after knowing the truth.
