Chapter 216: Is it still painful?

Inside the car, Winona blinked her bloodshot eyes, tears rolling down her cheeks.

Something had gotten into her eyes just now, and even after looking into the mirror for a while, she couldn't find it. She had rubbed her eye sockets with tissue until they turned red, but the feeling of something stuck in her eye hadn't eased.

Finally, Zachary could no longer bear it and forcefully turned her face towards him.

He leaned in very close, his warm breath brushing against her face. Winona could see his attractive and sexy lips as soon as she opened her eyes.

This sweet and ambiguous scene, which would be seen as torture for the current Winona.

She hadn't slept all night and her complexion was bad. She had deliberately applied a full face of makeup in the morning, but she forgot about it when she rubbed her eyes. Only later did she notice the smudged eyeshadow and eyeliner on her hand, but by then Zachary was already close.

Now, he had been staring at her face for almost five minutes.
Winona couldn't help but push him and asked in a low voice, "Is it okay now?"
"Yeah," he responded, "Does it still hurt?"
Winona blinked her eyes and no longer felt any discomfort, so she shook her head.
She originally thought Zachary would let go of her quickly, but he not only didn't loosen his grip but also moved closer, as if he wanted to kiss her.
Winona turned her head and said, "Fiona."
The man frowned, "Do you like her? You're obsessed with kissing me and calling her name."
Winona raised her chin slightly, motioning for him to look across the street. "Your old lover looks like she's about to cry. Are you sure you want to kiss me in front of her?"
Her voice was light and playful, clearly enjoying the spectacle.
Zachary turned around and indeed saw Fiona standing across the street, biting her lower lip and looking at them with a pitiful expression. Their eyes met, and as if finding her backbone, tears immediately welled up in her eyes.
The street was not wide, and Winona could clearly see her face. "Tsk, look at her crying. If she had been born during the heyday of a certain aunt, she would definitely be the designated leading actress. Tears fall from the middle of her eyes, her face remains tear-free, yet she still manages to look heartbroken without her features becoming disheveled."
Zachary glanced at her and asked, "So you're saying all this because you're jealous that she cries more beautifully than you?"
He returned to his position and raised the car window. "Although you do look ugly when you cry, I haven't minded, so there's no need to feel so inferior."
Winona sneered in anger, "That's just you being blind."
Zachary said nothing and simply pulled off the sun visor, directly facing Winona's eyes, which were all smudged from tears.
The weather wasn't hot now, and she didn't sweat from working all day, so she hadn't used waterproof professional makeup. Coupled with the fact that she had rubbed her eyes earlier, her appearance was indeed unsightly.
The man arched his eyebrows, "Black pearls?"
Winona ignored him and pulled out a makeup remover wipe to clean her face. The car made a U-turn in front and drove past Fiona without stopping for a moment.
She glanced at the rearview mirror and met Fiona's resentful gaze.
...
Night Club.
After finishing his business, Matthew sent his companion to the car and returned. He didn't feel like going upstairs again, so he sat directly in the lobby and ordered a bottle of high-proof alcohol.
He was already feeling tipsy earlier, and now he couldn't hold on after just a couple of drinks. He supported his temples with his hand and closed his eyes, feigning sleep.
The deafening rock music filled his ears, and on the stage were women in sexy outfits dancing jazz. The air was filled with the scent of alcohol mixed with the fragrance of women, stimulating a rapid surge of adrenaline.
A familiar voice pierced through the music and reached his ears, "Matthew..."
Matthew slowly opened his eyes and saw Fiona standing in front of him. She was wearing a fitted black dress with no accessories except for a watch. Her dance background gave her a standout presence even amidst a crowd of heavily made-up and provocatively dressed women.

Fiona sat down on a nearby chair and asked, "Are you here drinking alone because you're upset about Winona getting close to Zachary?"

Since the day Matthew saw Zachary and Winona together outside the Watson Group building, he had been keeping a close eye on them. Every time Winona went to the Watson Group, Zachary would be there too.

Frowning, Matthew asked, "What are you trying to say?"

Fiona smiled and leaned closer to him, her voice low and seductive as she held a white pill in her hand. "If it weren't for Zachary sleeping with Winona, they wouldn't have gotten married. Have you ever thought that if it was you who slept with her, you would be the one married to her?"

Matthew looked at her, or perhaps it was at the pill in her hand, unable to discern his thoughts, his gaze darkened.

"Now that they're divorced, everything is back to square one. If you find a way to get her to take this pill, she will be yours. In the future, when people see her, they will address her as Mrs. Nie, not Mrs. Bailey."

Silence lingered between them despite the noisy surroundings.

Seeing Matthew's silence, Fiona continued to provoke him, "Matthew, Winona doesn't love you anymore, or maybe she never loved you at all. Her apparent affection was nothing more than admiration for an outstanding person during her youth. This is your only chance. Are you sure you don't want it?"

Matthew could see in Winona's eyes that there was no trace of affection. Fiona was right, this might be his only chance, his only opportunity to have her.

He reached out and took the pill from her hand.

Fiona's plan succeeded, and she smiled, saying, "Winona is now also at Night Club, right at 309. Doesn't this mean that even heaven thinks you two are destined for each other?"

On the third floor, room 309.

Aside from Winona, there were three other women, her college roommates. They hadn't kept in touch after graduation, with two of them returning to their hometowns and one going to H City.

They finally managed to gather together and made plans to meet at the Night Club for a drink.

Lily, the most sentimental among them, said, "I thought we would never see each other again in this lifetime. After all, the four of us moved in different directions, covering all four compass points. It was so hard to gather us all together, so we must not leave until we're drunk."
Winona knew that she did not have a good demeanor when drunk, so she always restrained herself. "You three can get drunk, and I will take you to the hotel. We can't just lie here completely drunk like corpses."

Ann said, "What's the big deal? Isn't the Night Club the safest club in all of New York? Besides, our hotel is right upstairs. We can just have the waitstaff take us up later."

The Night Club was only relatively safe; when facing the powerful, they were powerless.

Winona didn't say anything about this, feeling disappointed. She had made up her mind not to get drunk, so she would avoid their attempts to persuade her to drink.

Alice, who had been quiet the whole time, shook her head and handed Winona a glass of wine. "Winona, I'm a bit drunk. After we finish this glass, let's slip away. We can come back down to pick up Lily and Ann after they get drunk."
