Chapter 366 Got a Matching Couple Set
Back at Regal Oaks, Winona was still trippin' over Frank's sudden idea for her to jet off abroad. Was The Turner Family about to shake things up big time?
No wonder they suddenly wanted to make moves in Dreamopolis.
She was so wrapped up in thoughts about The Turner Family that she totally spaced on Zachary's injury. When she snapped back to reality, he was gone.
He didn't even try to pull any of his usual stunts, which was so not like Zachary.
Just as Winona was about to head upstairs to check, her phone buzzed. It was Matthew. "Winona, the company's throwing a celebration dinner tonight for the Traverse City project. You free? Everyone at the project department misses you a ton. If you show up, they'll be stoked."
She was just a part-timer, clocking in no more than four hours a day. With her tight schedule, she'd dive straight into work, leaving no time for chit-chat. No way they missed her; they were just messing with Matthew.
She knew Matthew had to see through it.
Winona said, "Matthew, sorry, I got stuff to do later. Might be tied up for a bit..."
Matthew suddenly remembered something and cut her off, "Oh, right. My mom was cleaning the house a few days ago and found something your mom left for you. She wanted to give it to you personally, but she's been sick and bedridden the past few days. How about I bring it to the dinner tonight?"
"Your mom's sick? Is it bad?"
"Just a cold. She's always had a weak constitution, and it got worse 'cause she delayed treatment."
Winona felt a bit worried. Nova was one of her mom's few friends and had always been super kind to her. "I wanna visit your mom. Is she in the hospital?"
"She's at home. I need to head back anyway, so I can swing by and pick you up."
According to the property management, Winona hadn't been back to her apartment for ages, like she had moved out.
Winona heard some noise upstairs and looked up to see Zachary coming down. He had changed into a perfectly fitting black shirt, tucked neatly into his waistband, showing off his tall and lean physique.
His chest was defined, his waist was slim, and his butt was well-shaped. His muscles weren't overly exaggerated, but the power emanating from his body was evident.
He was more eye-catching than those male escorts trained to please rich ladies in clubs.
She said, "The place I'm crashing at now is kinda far. No need to pick me up, I'll drive over myself."
Matthew said, "Alright."
Zachary frowned, "Where you headed again? Your hand injury hasn't healed yet. The doc said you need more rest."
He pursed his lips and lied without flinching, "The person who hurt you hasn't been caught yet. What if they try to mess with you again?"
The main thing was he suspected the caller was Matthew. Only Matthew could be so smooth with the ladies.
"Mrs. Watson's condition is kinda serious. I'm going to see her."
Winona put away her phone. By the time Zachary spoke, Matthew had already hung up.
If it were Matthew who was sick, he would definitely stop her, but it was Matthew's mom who was ill.
Zachary couldn't help but grumble. The last plan didn't work, and now he was even using his own mom. Such a sneaky and scheming guy, yet Winona still thought he was a gentleman.
Winona was swapping her shoes at the entrance. "Did you take care of your injury? If it's serious, you should probably have a doc swing by the house."
Zachary mumbled something. He wanted to milk his "injury" for sympathy, but the problem was he wasn't actually hurt, which would be pretty obvious. "I'll go with you. Haven't seen Mrs. Watson in ages."
"Don't you need to hit up the company?"
Wasn't he a bit too chill for a CEO? Wouldn't the company tank?
"No need. Not much on my plate this afternoon. Had Dylan shuffle things around, and besides, it's almost closing time."
Before he could finish, Dylan's voice came from outside. Since Winona was about to head out, she had left the door open, making it super clear. "Mr. Bailey, the heads of VirtualVerse and NexaSphere Technologies are still waiting at the company. You done here? Shouldn't you head over first?"
Other companies might be cool, but these two were big shots and not to be messed with. Plus, they had a flight early tomorrow for a conference, so rescheduling was a no-go.
Zachary went silent.
He never saw the situation flipping so fast.
Winona said, "You should go. Those people probably won't mess with me for now. Don't sweat it."
They had said it was a warning when they splashed her in the morning, so they probably didn't mean to off her.
Zachary hesitated. "I'll have a bodyguard tag along with you."
"No need," she warned him. "And don't have anyone tail me either."
On her way, Winona stopped by a mall to grab some nutritional supplements. As soon as she rolled up to the Watson family home, she heard loud coughing from an upstairs window, like it couldn't be stopped.
She hurriedly carried the stuff inside and bumped into Matthew, who was just about to head out.
Matthew took the items from her and handed her a pair of women's slippers. "These are new, just picked them up on my way home."
"Mrs. Watson's condition still bad? What did the doc say?"
"It's better than before, but she's older, so her recovery's slower and might take a while."
"Winona, you're here. Come in and sit," Nova said, dragging her frail body out of the room, looking like a gust of wind could knock her over.
Winona was afraid she might tumble down the stairs, so she quickly went up to support her. "Mrs. Watson, don't worry about me. Let me help you back to bed."
"I've been lying in bed for days, my bones are turning to mush. Help me downstairs to sit for a bit," she said, her legs weak and walking super slow. Matthew and Winona supported her on either side, making a pretty good-looking pair.
After helping Nova sit down, Winona placed a cushion behind her back.
"One day, I was cleaning the house and found a watch your mom left here. You should take it as a keepsake."
Matthew went upstairs and brought down an old-looking watch, placing it in front of Winona.
A basic model with a metal strap, still stylish even today.
But this watch was identical to the one Matthew wore on his wrist.
Turned out to be a matching couple's watch.
Nova's next words explained it. "Your mom and I each bought one of these watches. That night, I even called her to chat about it, planning to have the driver deliver it to her the next day. But she went back to Silverton, and then it just got forgotten over time."
