Chapter 536 Zachary is Something

A guy was tapping on the window. He was tall, and Winona could tell by the way he was hunched over. He had on a black hoodie with the hood pulled down to hide the top part of his face, and a black mask covered the rest.

Winona's car was parked under a streetlight. The guy bent down to look inside, the light casting a glow on his back, making his face hidden in the shadows look like a dark blur.

He looked like a ghost.

Winona reached for the safety hammer in the storage box between the driver and passenger seats, pointing the sharp end at the guy while her other hand quickly pressed the ignition button.

"Mrs. Bailey, it's me; don't be scared." The guy hurriedly pulled down his mask, pressing his face against the glass to make himself more visible. He said, "Don't leave. Mr. Bailey sent me."

It was the same guy who had covered Winona's mouth in the parking lot last time, one of Zachary's men. Winona couldn't remember his name.

Seeing it was someone she knew, Winona relaxed a bit and rolled down the window, but she didn't let go of the safety hammer. "Where's Zachary?" she asked.

She glanced at her phone. Zachary hadn't replied to her message yet.

"Mr. Bailey sent me to help you move," the guy said.

"Move where?" Winona asked. She hadn't heard Zachary mention this. She looked past the guy, scanning behind him, but a parked car blocked her view. "Did you come alone?" she asked.

The guy replied, "Regal Oaks. Yes, I came alone. Mr. Bailey couldn't make it."

Winona opened the car door, hands in her pockets, tightening her coat as she looked around. "Where's your car?" she pressed.

Benjamin asked, "What?"

He continued, "I didn't drive. I took a cab..."

Winona didn't wait for him to finish. She walked away, turning on her phone's flashlight and inspecting the back seats of each car she passed.

The guy followed closely behind, puzzled. "Mrs. Bailey, what are you doing?" he asked.

Winona replied, "Looking for something."

"You're not planning to steal, are you?" Benjamin asked, bewildered. "It's the middle of the night. Who else would be sneaking around like this? If you need something, just ask Mr. Bailey. He'd get you anything, even the stars."

Winona ignored him.

Benjamin grew more anxious and talked more as they checked a few more cars. He said, "Mrs. Bailey, let's go get your things. It's freezing out here."

He continued, "I think someone upstairs is taking pictures of us. I saw a flash. The cops might show up soon. We should go."

"Do you talk this much in front of Zachary?" The disdain in Winona's voice was clear.

Benjamin fell silent. When Winona approached a domestic car, he stopped and closed his eyes, staying put.

Winona pressed the flashlight against the rear window, bending down to look inside.

The door opened.

Someone inside had opened it. Zachary pushed the door open a bit and said, "Get in."

Winona opened the door and got in.

Benjamin standing a short distance away finally understood. Winona wasn't looking for something; she was looking for Zachary.

The car wasn't a new model, and the space was cramped, filled with a faint smell of smoke and alcohol.

Zachary's long legs seemed awkwardly placed in the small space.

"Why didn't you come to tell me yourself?" Winona asked.

Zachary replied, "I had a few drinks. My legs are a bit weak. Didn't feel like walking."He had planned to wait upstairs, but when he got out of the car, he noticed someone suspiciously lurking near the apartment entrance, checking out everyone who came and went. He wasn't sure if Timothy had sent the person, so he decided to stay hidden to avoid any complications.

Winona's eyes were locked on Zachary. "Are you planning to do something dangerous behind my back again?"

Zachary cherished every moment he had with Winona. The thoughts of distancing himself from her that he had while sitting alone in the car were now completely overtaken by his growing affection.

He held Winona, his hand caressing her waist through her clothes, his head resting on her shoulder, his voice low. "No."

Winona asked, "Then why are you suddenly asking me to move?"

"It's not safe here," Zachary said, pointing to the apartment entrance. Winona looked up but could only see a vague outline. Zachary continued, "There's someone there. I had Benjamin check the surveillance. They've been there for three hours."

In this cold weather, no normal person would stay in an unheated lobby for three hours.

And the timing matched when Timothy had come to see Zachary.

Although Zachary had temporarily placated Timothy, Timothy was a madman. Who knew if he would do something crazy, dragging everyone down with him if he couldn't get his way?

Zachary remarked, "The Bailey Group has been making big moves lately. I'm worried Timothy might do something desperate. If you move back to Regal Oaks, there will be bodyguards, and I'll feel more at ease."

He had his own reasons for wanting Winona to move back to Regal Oaks. Before his identity was revealed, she didn't move back because she didn't want to be reminded of the past. But now that he had come clean, and she still didn't want to move back, it meant she didn't want to. If he didn't take this opportunity to coax her back, she would be even more reluctant once things settled down.

"When do you plan to break ties with him?" Winona asked.

"Not sure yet. Timothy is too dangerous," Zachary said. The danger wasn't Timothy's capability but Timothy's mentality. Having someone like that watching Zachary from the shadows was bound to cause trouble eventually. Zachary added, "I need solid evidence to ensure he ends up in jail."

Winona lowered her eyes, only able to see Zachary's back. She said, "Zachary, you can't keep things from me like last time. No matter how dangerous it is, I have the right to know."

"Okay." Zachary's fingers ran through Winona's hair, gently rubbing the back of her head, and he had a faint smile in his voice.

"Be serious," Winona said, pushing him away, her eyes cold. "If you dare to act behind my back again, I won't forgive you."

She feared most that Zachary would be in a life-or-death situation without her knowing, only to hear about it later from him or someone else.

She didn't like that.

Zachary swallowed and said cautiously, "It should be soon."

Winona recounted what she had heard at Lydia's house, emphasizing the name "Alton." She said, "Mom was too emotional and had a fever. I couldn't ask for more. You should look into it."

Zachary didn't have a strong impression of Alton. Alton had died when Zachary was young. Although he was friends with Evander, Zachary's family never mentioned Alton, let alone commemorated him. If it weren't for his son Timothy, Zachary would have completely forgotten about him. Zachary replied, "Okay."
