Chapter 389 Your Plan Has Been Exposed

Winona couldn't stop thinking about that grave. Was it just someone with the same name, or was it really her mom's? And if it was, who put it there? And why?

She hit a red light and grabbed her phone, checking those numbers again.

Before she could finish, her phone rang. It was Zachary.

"Hello?" she answered.

"Where are you?" His voice was flat, giving nothing away.

"I'm at..." Before she could finish, Rebecca's voice cut in, "Winona, your plan's been exposed. This jerk..."

Zachary, sitting across from her, held up five fingers. She remembered she was paid to keep quiet and stopped talking.

Winona sighed and started the car. "Where are you guys now?"

Rebecca said, "I'll send you the location."

After hanging up, Rebecca sent the location and turned to Zachary. "Winona must have had a reason. She didn't lie on purpose. You can't just judge her like that!"

She hadn't expected that tagging along for an interview would lead to running into Zachary. The guy was slick, tricking her into talking, and he did it so smoothly. If he hadn't called Winona right in front of her, she wouldn't have known she was played.

Businessmen, always so sneaky.

Zachary, looking unfazed, said, "You can leave now."

Rebecca felt a wave of frustration. She hadn't planned to stick around, but being told to leave was a different story.

"Remember how eager you were to invite me for coffee just now?" She stood up, glaring at him. "Your attitude sure changes fast."

Not long after Rebecca left, Winona showed up.

The café was big, with small stained glass windows that let in less light than regular ones. Combined with the fancy garden outside and the mist from the pool, it made the place feel dim.

Zachary sat there, radiating power, his eyes glued to the entrance. Winona felt it the moment she walked in.

She walked over and took the seat Rebecca had just left. "Zachary, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to deceive you."

Zachary's voice was ice-cold. "Where did you go?"

"I went to the cemetery at Pomegranate Hill with Frank," she said, picking her words carefully. "The person behind this is nuts. Last time, Rebecca got hurt because of me. Her hand was burned with acid. I didn't want to drag you into this."

As she spoke, Zachary's eyes stayed locked on her, heavy and intense, making Winona's heart race. He was about to say something, but she cut him off. "You have no idea how scared I was when Rebecca got hurt because of me. If Mr. Lewis hadn't braked just in time when the acid was thrown, she might have been disfigured because of me."

"Zachary, I know you're not afraid, and you always have bodyguards around, but there are dangers you can't always see coming," she paused, then added, "And I'm terrified that if something happens to you..."

Her voice trailed off, but the message was clear.

Zachary felt a warmth spread through his chest, a slight sweetness, and a soft smile tugged at his lips.

"Are you keeping all this from me because you're scared of dragging me into it? Have you even thought about moving out?" His voice was still cold, but the anger had lessened, though there was a hint of frustration.

Winona went silent; she had thought about it.

If that person could hurt Rebecca, who had nothing to do with this, they clearly had no moral boundaries. It was only a matter of time before they targeted Zachary.

Zachary had only mentioned it casually, but he hadn't expected her to actually consider it. The anger that had just subsided flared up again. He said in the coldest tone, "You're afraid of implicating me, but not Frank?"

"He's already investigating this, so it's not really implicating him."

"Why should he? That's your mom, which makes her my mother too. What does it have to do with an outsider like him?"

"He had a romantic history with my mom."

Zachary was stunned for a moment and said, "Then let him investigate."

From anger to acceptance, it took just one sentence. He switched emotions seamlessly, and Winona couldn't help but admire his speed of changing attitudes. She said in a playful tone, "Mr. Bailey, are you a professional at this?"

He took her hand, his thumb gently rubbing her palm, teasing her subtly. "So, are you free this afternoon?"

Although she had found a strange grave and obtained the family member's phone number, she couldn't call now for fear of alerting the enemy. "I still want to see those two people who threw acid at me."

"I've already asked all the necessary questions and had them investigated. There's nothing suspicious, so I let them go," Zachary pursed his lips and said, "Today is the weekend, and it's June 13th."

"Yeah, I know," Winona replied.

Grace was supposed to go to Pomegranate Hill on June 16th to pay respects. After learning this from Carlos, she had been keeping an eye on the date, afraid of forgetting.

Zachary took a deep breath, looking a bit annoyed and frustrated. He stared at Winona for a long time before asking in a muffled voice, "Do you really not remember what day it is today?"
