Chapter 587 Remembering His Scumbag Behavior
Winona saw the uncontrollable joy on Zachary's face and decided to tease him, "Did I say something wrong? We're not engaged yet, we're just boyfriend and girlfriend..."
"No, you didn't," Zachary quickly interrupted her. "You already accepted my proposal, so we're engaged."
He gently rubbed the ring on Winona's finger. "No take-backs."
Winona had only meant to tease him, but seeing Zachary's serious expression, she couldn't help but drop the joke. She avoided his gaze and softly replied, "Okay."
People occasionally came over to toast Zachary. As his ex-wife, now appearing together so publicly, it was clear they were back together, drawing a lot of attention. Winona had worked all day and just wanted to be invisible and eat quietly, but every person who came to toast inevitably had something to say about her.
Winona disliked socializing and even more so the insincere compliments. After being interrupted several times while trying to eat, she got fed up and shooed Zachary away from the dining area.
After finishing her meal, Winona didn't rush to find Zachary. Instead, she took out her phone to reply to Rebecca.
"Winona," Matthew said, pulling out the chair next to her and sitting down. "A reporter wants to do an exclusive interview with you as the designer of Traverse City. I haven't agreed yet; I wanted to get your opinion first."
Winona replied, "I'm just a part-timer. No need for an interview. Let someone else from the company do it."
She hadn't formally studied architectural design and didn't understand many aspects. She had only sketched the architectural style of the era, and Matthew's team had refined the details.
So, she felt unworthy of an exclusive interview.
Matthew continued, "With this interview, you'll gain some fame in the architecture industry. If someone invites you to design again, the offer will be higher."
Winona said, "I don't plan to continue in architectural design. Fame doesn't matter to me. But it's a good opportunity; you can push someone you want to develop."
Matthew had expected her refusal, so he quickly moved on. "That's the second thing I wanted to discuss. Traverse City is planning a second phase and wants to invite you to continue as the exterior designer."
The first phase had already started selling and was very popular, so they wanted to capitalize on the momentum and quickly finalize the second phase.
Before Winona could respond, a shadow suddenly fell over her, enveloping her completely.
The sound of a chair scraping the floor came from her other side.
Winona and Matthew looked over to see Zachary sitting down with a cold expression.
He looked at Matthew, his hand gripping the wine glass so tightly that the veins on the back of his hand stood out. Clearly, he had heard Matthew's invitation.
He was obviously up to no good.
With so many professional architects, why did Matthew insist on Winona, an amateur? It was clearly an excuse to get close to her.
But Zachary knew he shouldn't interfere before Winona gave her answer. It was a matter of respect. Matthew knew Zachary wouldn't meddle in Winona's professional affairs, which was why he had deliberately suggested she work at his company.
Seeing Zachary's pent-up frustration, Matthew felt a sense of satisfaction. The tension in his chest eased, and he felt completely at ease, even breathing more smoothly. His tone became lighter. "The pay will be higher than last time, no fixed hours, and meetings will be scheduled around your availability."
Zachary sipped his drink gloomily and muttered, "No time, not going."
He thought he had spoken quietly, but Winona, sitting right next to him, heard every word clearly.
Winona smiled inwardly, thinking, "Childish."
She held back her laughter and said to Matthew, "Matthew, I'm sorry, but I don't plan to juggle two jobs. The museum is very busy right now, and I can't spare the time. Please find someone else. If there's anything related to my expertise that needs clarification, they can always ask me."
Zachary's mood instantly improved. He looked at Matthew with a triumphant expression. "Winona, we don't need the money. You can buy whatever you want without working so hard. Those who can't stand to see you relaxed and try to give you more work should be kept at a distance to avoid their toxic influence."
Zachary's sarcastic tone was unmistakable.
Matthew, unfazed, smiled warmly. "Winona, have you spent the three billion dollars you got back from Zachary? You should fill up your savings a bit. After all, the interest on three billion dollars is quite substantial."
Zachary was speechless.
The past mistakes he had made were indeed debts to be repaid.
If he hadn't used that three billion dollars to threaten Winona back then, he wouldn't be facing Matthew's mockery now.
Damn it...
Zachary, worried that Winona might remember his past misdeeds, quickly grabbed her hand. "Winona."
Winona looked at him without speaking.
A wave of anxiety and unease washed over him. "Winona, I'll transfer the three billion dollars to you right away, along with the interest."
Winona replied, "No need."
She didn't need the money now. Putting that three billion dollars in the bank would just earn interest. It was better to leave it with Zachary. If he insisted on giving it to her, she could ask for shares in the Bailey Group instead.
The Bailey Group's year-end dividends were much higher than bank interest, and the money would be her personal savings. Even if Zachary wanted a divorce and asked for the shares back, she would have already received the principal.
She was quite the clever one. Next time she saw Rebecca, she'd have to get some praise.
Zachary, unaware of Winona's plan, thought she was angry because she remained silent. He quickly explained, "I just didn't want a divorce back then and didn't know what else to do. From now on, all my money is yours. If we ever divorce, I'll leave with nothing..."
Zachary quickly corrected himself, "No, we won't divorce. We'll never divorce again."
Matthew, having stirred the pot, had already gotten up and left, leaving Zachary to frantically explain himself.
Winona held Zachary's hand and smiled at him. "Right, no more divorces."
Zachary breathed a sigh of relief, cursing Matthew under his breath while pulling out his phone. "I'll transfer the money to you."
That three billion dollars was like a ticking time bomb. Keeping it was too risky.
Winona said calmly, "No need. Transferring it back and forth is too much trouble."
