Chapter 254 The Man with Poor Reaction and Speed
Matthew immediately noticed Winona's abnormality. As she was about to run away from him, he quickly grabbed her hand and asked, "What's wrong with you?"
Not far off, Dylan and Zachary noticed Winona's gaze turning in their direction. Anxiously, Dylan remarked, "It appears that Mrs. Bailey has caught sight of you."
Their behavior could be considered as spying.
Zachary frowned. "No, she's not looking at me."
Before Zachary could finish speaking, Winona broke free from Matthew's grasp and hurried towards a sparsely populated area.
Zachary commanded Dylan, "Intercept Winona."
Matthew stood still for a moment and then started to follow. However, the street was crowded, and Winona quickly disappeared into the crowd.
Winona's gaze was fixed on a slender figure not far away. A woman of medium height, around 5'5", swiftly moved through the crowd. The woman occasionally showed a side profile that Winona found familiar. She was wearing a gemstone bracelet on her wrist and a fitted dress.
Before Winona's mother passed away, this woman used to visit her home frequently. Winona often saw them chatting in the garden for hours, appearing to have a very close relationship. Unlike those who gradually drifted away like the Watson family, she disappeared suddenly.
After her mother's death, this woman never appeared again, not even at Winona's mother's funeral.
As people bustled about on the street, the woman quickly blended into the crowd. Just when Winona felt a bit disheartened, her figure reappeared.
After several repetitions, the two gradually made their way through the crowd towards the outskirts of the scenic area.
The noisy voices faded behind them as they approached a small parking area.
Only two dim incandescent lamps illuminated the area, and the parking lot seemed full.
Despite it being the busiest time on the street, no one was leaving, and other cars couldn't enter, making the environment unusually quiet.
The woman headed straight towards the depths of the parking lot. Winona slowed her pace, hesitating between following and not following.
Driven by the chance to unearth her mother's past secrets through this woman, she felt compelled to follow. Yet, a potent intuition cautioning her of peril led to her hesitation.
Especially when the woman had already sat in the car, yet the vehicle remained stationary.
After standing still for a few seconds, Winona decisively turned and walked away.
Her hasty decision to follow was impulsive, driven by seeing an old friend.
However, upon calming down, she realized the woman was clearly trying to lure her.
With a considerable distance and many people between them, she had lost sight of the woman several times.
If it weren't for the woman intentionally luring her, Winona would have been incredibly lucky.
She came to Mode City for work, never expecting to encounter such circumstances.
Completely unprepared, without even a means of self-defense, she ventured forward recklessly. Rather than gathering information, she might encounter peril.
Engaging in risky endeavors without ensuring one's safety was not bravery but foolishness.
Having failed in their initial attempt to entice her, they were bound to orchestrate another scheme.
The people in the darkness sensed Winona's thoughts and grew impatient.
Although kidnapping on such a busy street was risky, they preferred being caught by the police to facing their boss's blame for a failed mission.
However, before they could intercept Winona, someone else stopped them.
Their faces morphed in unison at the sight of the figure before them, eyes filled with fear. Yet, the thought of their boss quelled their instinct to flee.As Winona crossed the street, Zachary, with a cold expression, grabbed her hand and asked, "Who were you following just now?"
His attention was solely on her. The street was crowded, and losing sight of her was easy. He had no time to observe the surroundings or notice any unusual behavior in the crowd.
Already confused, Winona was lost in her thoughts. Instinctively, she moved towards the bustling area, and when someone grabbed her hand, she was startled and almost pulled away.
Before she could pull away, Winona recognized the person holding her hand. Her tense nerves instantly relaxed. "Someone I know."
Zachary frowned, looking down at her, trying to discern something from her expression.
However, since such matters didn't reflect on her face, he only sensed that she was hiding something from him, unable to pinpoint what it was.
Suddenly, Winona realized they were in Mode City.
Even if she had broken both legs, she shouldn't have seen Zachary, who should be in Dreamopolis.
Yet here he was, not only in her sight but also holding her hand. "You shouldn't be here."
"I'm on a business trip."
"You're on a business trip to Eirondia Avenue?"
The doubt on Winona's face provoked him. Already irked by her spending the entire day with Matthew, he exploded, "What brought you to City A then?"
Caught off guard, she responded truthfully, "A business trip."
"On Eirondia Avenue, a business trip?"
Winona fell silent.
Observing Winona's silence, Zachary pursed his lips and lowered his voice. "Since you've made it here, I can be here too. After all, Matthew hasn't secured this area."
Winona sensed a tinge of jealousy.
She still needed to find Matthew. She had left without saying anything earlier, and he must be worried.
Despite being out for shopping, she had an agenda. Her focus was more on the architecture than the storefronts, essentially making it a working outing.
"Alright, you continue your business trip. I'll leave first."
"Where are you going? What difference does it make if you leave Matthew for a while?"
Zachary held onto her hand, refusing to let go.
"If Matthew can't keep up with you, let alone catch you, and if there was real danger just now, you'd probably be in the morgue by the time he found you. A man with such poor reaction and speed is worthless."
Whether it was due to their rivalry or Zachary's upgraded ability to mock others, Winona felt his words about Matthew were particularly harsh today.
"You always like to say hurtful things. It's a disease. You should get it treated before it harms you."
"I'm just showing you the truth. Being handsome and having a good temper is useless. Every time you're in danger, he's nowhere to be found. What you need isn't a man who can't protect you."
In terms of appearance, he wasn't inferior to Matthew, but girls preferred gentle and well-mannered men, believing they could provide security and make good husbands.
"Let's make a bet. Let's see if Matthew could find you within ten minutes."
"I'm not interested."
She wasn't dating Matthew, so she didn't have many expectations of him.
Ignoring her refusal, Zachary continued, "If you lose, you have to accompany me for a meal."
