Chapter 498 She Would Make a Good Wife

After it was all said and done, Zachary held Winona close, trying to calm his racing heart. He was soaked in sweat, like he’d just been dragged out of a pool. "Winona, I'm back now," he said, his voice still shaky. "I'll take over the Bailey Group. I won't let it go under. You should quit and go back to being the artifact restorer you love."

He was still catching his breath, his chest heaving. "Ever since you started at the Bailey Group, all I see is how tired and unhappy you are. After our divorce, you were glowing. I want you to shine like that with me, just like you do on TV."

Winona was surprised Zachary felt this way. She had joined the Bailey Group on her own and didn’t want him to feel guilty, thinking she was forced into it because of him. "Zachary, it's not what you think..." she started.

But Zachary cut her off, "I know, Winona. You wanted to help me keep the Bailey Group afloat while I was gone. Now that I'm back, I'll handle it, okay?"

Winona was too exhausted to argue. It was already broad daylight, way past time to be at work.

Zachary chuckled softly and playfully nipped at her earlobe. "If you don't get up, I'll keep going."

Winona, who was completely worn out, suddenly found a burst of energy. She pushed Zachary away, sat up, and dashed to the bathroom.

As soon as her feet hit the floor, her knees buckled, and she almost fell.

She grabbed the bed with one hand and supported her waist with the other, awkwardly making her way to the bathroom. She shut and locked the door behind her.

In the now quiet room, Zachary stood there for a moment, unable to hold back a low laugh.

Because of this unexpected turn of events, Winona was predictably late. As she clocked in, someone nearby muttered, "Having connections really makes a difference. She's two hours late, but if it were us, the supervisor would have chewed us out by now."

"Her direct boss is her ex-father-in-law, and she's carrying the future heir of the Bailey Group. Even if she didn't show up at all, she'd still get paid."

When dealing with people who were unhappy with their own lives and could only envy others without any self-reflection, the more you argued, the more validated they felt. It was best to just agree with them. Winona said, "You're right. I didn't mind the deductions."

Why couldn't she just eat and work peacefully? Instead, she had to provoke Zachary, which resulted in being pinned down for two hours. If she had kept quiet, it would have been fine, but Zachary kept asking, forcing her to admit that "he was good at it" before he would stop.

She had never seen a man so concerned about his pride.

The two women who had been gossiping about Winona stared at her retreating back, speechless.

"By the way," Winona said with a warm smile, "if you're feeling jealous, why not try marrying a wealthy heir? There are plenty of office buildings around here. Just pick one and wait at the entrance—you might just catch one someday. That's how I ended up with Mr. Bailey."

Winona turned around, her smile fading instantly. She discreetly rubbed her lower back, gritting her teeth.Zachary, that beast, was absolutely out of his mind. He must've taken some kind of stimulant. No normal person could go for two hours straight. Even if it wasn't continuous, it was still way too much for Winona.

As she stepped into the private elevator reserved for the CEO, the polished metal walls reflected her tired face. She'd been going barefaced at the office, pretending to be pregnant. Now, without the cover of foundation, the dark circles under her eyes were painfully obvious.

Looking at her reflection, Winona couldn't help but think of Zachary's words. She touched her face. Was her unhappiness really that obvious?

Yeah, she did look pretty worn out.

The elevator doors opened, and there stood Dylan, holding a stack of documents. "Mrs. Bailey," he greeted.

Winona nodded. "Morning."

It wasn't morning anymore; it was almost noon, but Dylan didn't mention it. "Mrs. Bailey, you look much better today. Did something nice happen?"

Winona forced an awkward smile. "You should get back to work."

Watching her hurry away, Dylan frowned, confused. Did he say something wrong?

That day, the atmosphere on the Bailey Group's floor was particularly tense. Samuel, Matthew, and Anthony were there, too. They were probably discussing a new project. As soon as they arrived, they went straight to Evander's office. This kind of meeting didn't require minutes, so Winona only went in occasionally to serve water.

The meeting wrapped up around five o'clock. Winona had ordered food from a nearby restaurant.

As she was about to leave, Anthony called out, "Miss Sullivan."

Winona turned, surprised. "What's up?"

She wasn't familiar with Anthony. Even though they were now in the same company, they didn't interact much. If there was any connection, it would probably be Rebecca.

"Rebecca's birthday is coming up, and I wanted to ask what she likes." His expression was neutral, and his tone was serious and cold, like he was evaluating an assistant's knowledge of legal statutes rather than asking about the preferences of someone he cared about.

Winona felt like a college student being called on by a professor. She instinctively stood up straight, then realized Anthony was asking about Rebecca.

Realizing the time, she acknowledged that it was indeed approaching. She had been so busy lately that it had slipped her mind.

She asked, "Mr. Lewis, do you really like Rebecca?"

Although Winona and Rebecca weren't inseparable, they shared everything. Every time Rebecca mentioned Anthony, it was with gritted teeth. Moreover, Anthony had almost sent Rebecca to jail. Although Zachary was the mastermind, Rebecca, with her vengeful nature, didn't differentiate between the mastermind and the accomplice.

Winona had no idea how things had progressed to this point between Rebecca and Anthony.

Anthony was silent for a few seconds. "She would make a good wife," he said.

With Rebecca's constant chatter, the house wouldn't be too quiet.

"If that's the case, Mr. Lewis, don't waste your time. She won't like anything you give her. There are plenty of people who would make good wives. You can find someone else like her." Winona's tone cooled as she quickened her pace. "If Mr. Lewis is too busy to find someone, I can help."

She was already running late and had been stopped by Anthony. Now, everyone else had already entered the private room.
