Chapter 75 The Cause of the Car Accident

After hanging up the phone, Winona reported to the police. Ten minutes later, the police arrived and convinced the landlord and his group to leave after understanding the situation.

As the voices of complaints faded away, her drowsiness disappeared. She sat cross-legged on the sofa, opened a website, and started looking for a suitable house.

After saying such hurtful things tonight, she definitely wouldn't continue living here.

Just as she found a nice house and was about to click on the details page, a call came in from an unfamiliar foreign number.

Winona didn't have any friends abroad. In the past, she would've immediately assumed it was a scam and hung up, but this time...

She stared at the string of numbers, lost in thought, until it was about to disconnect, then slid her finger on the screen to answer. "Hello."

Carlos's familiar yet unfamiliar voice came from the other end. "Winona, it's your father."

Winona had guessed it earlier, so she impatiently asked, "What do you want?"

"I just wanted to ask how you've been these past few years in America. Before..."

Winona interrupted him, "Get to the point, otherwise, I'll hang up."

If it weren't for retrieving her mother's belongings, she wouldn't even bother answering the call!

Carlos was infuriated, but he took a few deep breaths to calm himself. "Your sister called me yesterday, saying that she's interested in Matthew. Find a suitable time to invite them both out for a meal and get to know each other."

Winona remained silent, already guessing it was about this.

Seeing her silence, Carlos thought he had a chance and started to brainwash her. "I know you're feeling wronged, but you and Layla are blood-related sisters after all. Although you married into the Bailey family, your relationship with Mr. Bailey isn't good... If you abandon it, it would be like losing something of little value."

"It seems simple, doesn't it? But if your sister marries Matthew, even if Mr. Bailey wants to divorce you, Layla can still be your backer, ensuring you'll live a worry-free life for the rest of your days."

Winona got straight to the point with her conditions; "Give my mother's things back to me."

"I've already brought those things with me. International shipping is strict - what if they get lost on the way? By the way, what things are left? I've sold everything that could be sold and thrown away what couldn't be sold! "

"In that case, there's nothing more to say."

Winona hung up the phone directly, and in the next second, Carlos called again; "I'll send them to you right away. Handle the introduction quickly, your sister can't wait."

His tone this time was icy and filled with disgust, not bothered to maintain any pretense.

Winona remained silent for a moment, then suddenly asked, "Where were you that night when something happened to my mother?"

"...I've told you so many times. Your grandmother wasn't feeling well that night, so I went to see her."

"You left at eight, but didn't arrive at Crest Manor until eleven."

The Sullivan family home is only a half-hour drive from Crest Manor. Winona remembered it clearly. The accident happened when her mother was hit by a speeding taxi that crashed into a parked truck.

That road was under construction at the time, and half of the streetlights were dismantled, making visibility extremely poor. The truck was parked illegally without any lights.

Normally, her mother would drive herself to work, but during that time, Carlos happened to have a project near her workplace and would go there every day. He said he would pick her up after work.

Except on that particular night, he didn't. And then her mother had the accident!

Angry and exasperated, Carlos retorted, "The police investigation already said it was an accident. Why do you keep holding onto it? Do you think I killed your mother? If it wasn't for you making your grandmother angry that day, she wouldn't have had a heart problem. If she didn't have a problem, would I have gone to meet her? If someone caused your mother's death, it's you, the main culprit!"

After saying that, Carlos hung up the phone while Winona clenched her lips, trying to restrain her emotions...

She spent the night sleepless, with her mother's smiling face occupying her mind.

The next morning, immediately after getting up, Winona went to the real estate agency to look at houses. Several homes were available in this area, and it didn't take long for her to make a choice. The landlord would come over to sign the contract after work.

Once she settled the housing matters, Winona went back to pack her belongings. But as soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she saw a man standing at her door, acting suspiciously like he was picking the lock.

Winona instinctively grabbed a fire extinguisher. "What are you doing outside my apartment?"

The man, who was focused on tinkering with her door lock, jumped in surprise at the sound of her voice, almost leaping in place before turning sharply to look at her.

The man hurriedly explained, "Please don't misunderstand. I'm the landlord's locksmith. Is she your mother? She was just here; she's on the phone now."

Winona's expression turned cold. "I'm the tenant, and the lease hasn't expired yet. I am the one currently living in this apartment, and she doesn't have the right to let anyone come and unlock..."

Before she could finish her sentence, the landlord appeared from the security passage.

The landlord suddenly burst out, "This is my house, and I can handle it however I want. I won't rent it to you anymore, so you better move out immediately!"

"Do you still want to stay at the police station for a few more days?"

As soon as the police station was mentioned, the previously arrogant landlord immediately grew weak!

"I really have an urgent matter to sell the house. You can't be unreasonable! How about this, I will refund you the full amount of rent and deposit you've paid. Consider the time you've lived here as my treat!"

"I don't need you to waive the rent. I will move out when the contract expires."

"Young lady, I beg you!" The landlord cried with a mournful face, her voice filled with tears.

Because of this incident, when Winona signed the contract in the evening, she brought her suitcase with her.

The landlord dared to call a locksmith to break into the door in broad daylight. Who knows what else could happen at night? It was no longer suitable to stay there.

When Winona arrived, the new landlord hadn't come yet. After waiting for a while, the agent approached her with an embarrassed look, "I'm sorry, Mrs. Sullivan, but the landlord is no longer renting."

Winona frowned. It was so sudden, just like Zachary's style!

She cursed him in her heart and asked the agent, "What if I want to rent another house?"

"Sorry, Mrs. Sullivan, we currently don't have any suitable listings for you."

In the morning, there were more than ten options to choose from, but now there were no listings. Winona had anticipated this outcome and didn't want to waste her energy arguing, so she left with her suitcase.

Before leaving, she sent a message to Zachary: " I would rather sleep under a bridge than let you have your way, jerk!"

"If you're capable, buy all the houses in the world!"

"Jerk, bastard, I curse you to premature ejaculation on Fiona's bed!"

She sent three messages in a row, each challenging Zachary's bottom line...
