Chapter 357 Did He Throw Away My Love Letter?
"When did I...?" Winona scratched her head, trying to remember. "Oh yeah, that was for some director dude. Needed a hand double for his new show. I hooked him up and then ghosted him."
Zachary's eyes lit up, but he played it cool, just letting out a low "Hmm."
Then came the bombshell, "You were on a blind date with Miss Walker back then."
Zachary looked confused, "Who's Miss Walker?"
Winona shot him a look, "We had dinner together, and you can't even remember her name? Her dad almost got hurt 'cause of you."
Zachary's face darkened as he remembered, "The one who spilled hot water on your hand?"
Even though it had been ages, the anger in his voice was still fresh.
Dylan had booked a couple's private room, and as soon as they walked in, the place screamed luxury and romance.
Winona opened the menu the waiter handed her. The first thing she saw was a heart-shaped steak with a cheesy name, "One Heart, One Mind."
Flipping through, she noticed all the dish names were just as cringy, like single folks weren't even allowed to eat there.
She ordered a steak and a dessert. Zachary got the same, and just like that, they were already over three grand in. Then he ordered a bottle of wine, and the total shot up to nearly a hundred grand.
By the time Winona realized, the waiter had already left, looking super pleased.
"Are you nuts?" She glared at Zachary, almost ready to yank his ear. "Isn't the wine in your home cellar enough? You had to come here? That waiter looked at you like you were a walking ATM."
The worst part was that the wine here was all show, with an insane markup.
Zachary didn't get mad. Instead, he pulled out a bunch of black credit cards from his wallet and laid them in front of Winona, one by one, "These are all my liquid assets. From now on, you handle them. Buy whatever you want."
With each card he placed, Winona's eyes widened more and more, until they were practically bugging out.
Zachary's rare romantic gesture was totally overshadowed by the shock of all that money. Her mind was spinning with thoughts of those black cards.
Even though she always said she didn't care about money, this kind of wealth was hard to ignore.
She couldn't take them, but who wouldn't be tempted?
Winona's hands, which had been on the table, moved underneath it. She was scared that if she wasn't careful, her hands and brain would act on their own and snatch a card.
Given Zachary's current mood, he might just turn one of those cards into a ring and put it on her finger.
After a long pause, she finally calmed down and tried to sound normal, "You drive yourself home later. I'll grab a cab."
Zachary was silent.
This was not the reaction he had expected.
"Why?"
"I'm scared of getting mugged. I'm tiny, I'd just slow you down. You go alone, it's safer."
Zachary saw right through her excuse and pressed his lips together, "Winona, don't you believe me when I say, 'I'll change'?"
Meeting his gaze, Winona's heart skipped a beat.
She knew Zachary was really trying to change, just like he promised.
If this was the old him, he would've already made some snarky comment.
But hearts didn't turn cold overnight, and a little change wasn't enough to warm them back up. Plus, digging into Yara's case was risky. She didn't know much about the Turner family, but if even Frank, who'd been in power for years, thought it was dangerous, it probably was.
Yara was her mom, she couldn't just let her die unjustly. But Yara wasn't Zachary's mom, and she couldn't drag him into danger knowingly.
He had power, influence, and money, but even prime ministers got taken out.
For all the kindness Lydia had shown her over the years, she couldn't selfishly put her only son in harm's way.
Winona's eyes darted away, her voice getting softer, "Don't flash your cash around like that, okay?"
Her voice trailed off into silence.
Zachary's gaze was intense, giving her no chance to dodge.
Winona licked her lips but stayed quiet.
She couldn't deny she was moved at that moment.
Whether it was his gaze, his words, the overwhelming power of money, or the romantic vibe, she couldn't quite tell.
Zachary spoke softly, "I know I was a jerk before, and it's normal for you to be unsure about me. I'm not giving you the cards to buy you off, and I never thought you'd be with me just for money."
If Winona could be bought with money, she wouldn't have insisted on divorcing him even while carrying billions in debt.
"I gave you the cards because a husband's bank cards should be managed by his wife."
This simple statement was the most touching thing a woman could hear, and with the enormous sum involved, it was simple yet dazzling.
Winona's heart trembled and her cheeks flushed, but she tried to keep her cool, "You're not even officially my boyfriend yet, and you wanna skip straight to the end? If you were this good at skipping steps, why didn't you skip grades in school?"
"I wanted to, but I was already older than you. Skipping grades would've meant even less time together," he said. Even though he was already interning when she was a freshman, they were still at the same school and occasionally ran into each other. "Even then, your eyes were only on Matthew. You couldn't see anyone else."
Winona was surprised, "So, you had a crush on me back then?"
Zachary didn't deny it, which was as good as admitting it.
Thinking about how she had asked him to deliver love letters, Winona felt embarrassed. He was so proud.
She looked touched, "And you still agreed to deliver my love letters. You're really kind."
Because she no longer liked Matthew, she could talk about those love letters without any awkwardness, even with a bit of self-mockery, "Did he throw away all my love letters?"
