Chapter 624 Give Him Two Big Punches

Zachary stood by the window, his hair whipping around in the cold March wind. He seemed oblivious to the chill, standing there with a cigarette in his hand, which he had squeezed out of shape without lighting. His usually immaculate clothes were now wrinkled and clung to him, their expensive value completely obscured. If you looked closely, you could see dark, dried bloodstains.

Rebecca was supposed to meet Zachary at the airport today. When she arrived, he was nowhere to be found. As time ticked away, she called him and found out he was at the hospital.

He had gone to buy a gift for Winona and happened to witness a couple arguing. A wedding photo frame was thrown from the third floor, and though it wasn't a high drop, the frame was hard and angular enough to cause serious injury. Maeve was there too and pushed Zachary out of harm's way, resulting in her own injury. Now, Zachary was in the hospital, Maeve hadn't left, and the couple who threw the frame were in police custody. It was a lose-lose situation for everyone involved.

Zachary replied, "Okay."

Rebecca pointed at Maeve, who was pale from blood loss, lying on the hospital bed. "Last time you had a scandal with her," she said with a mocking tone, "Winona defended you, saying you must have been unwell. What about today? Another coincidence? Dreamopolis is huge, with countless streets, yet you two just happened to be together."

Maeve, weak but determined to clear Zachary's name, spoke up, "I ran into Mr. Bailey by chance. I tutor in that area every week. If you don't believe me, I can give you my employer's number."

Rebecca sneered, "You two must be really destined for each other. Should I wish you a long and happy life together?"

Thinking about how Winona was still unaware and worried about Zachary, Rebecca felt a surge of anger. If it weren't for Winona's upcoming competition, she wouldn't have helped Zachary keep this from her.

Zachary frowned, displeased. "Don't say that."

"Whether it's true or not, you know better than anyone. After Winona's competition tomorrow, you need to explain this to her, whether by phone or in person. If you don't, I will, and I can't guarantee my version will be free of personal bias."

Before leaving, she glanced at Maeve. "Ms. Harrington, just a reminder, this man has a girlfriend. If you can't resist getting close to him, maybe you should take a morality class."

Maeve remained silent.

Zachary remained silent.

Rebecca reached for the door, but it was pushed open. She frowned at the newcomer. "What are you doing here?"

Anthony, her driver for the day, had taken her to the airport and then to the hospital. Though he had been diligent, her dislike for Zachary extended to his friend Anthony.

Anthony felt wronged, glancing at Maeve on the bed and Zachary by the window. "You've been up here a while, so I came to get you."

Rebecca didn't respond, walking past him and out the door.

Anthony nodded at Zachary, giving him a look that said "good luck," and left.

Zachary looked at Maeve on the bed. She was thin, a small lump under the covers. Her face was expressionless, her eyes downcast.

Zachary replied, "Thanks."

Maeve looked up and gave him a gentle smile. "No need."

Her injury was on her back, so she could only lie on her side. The anesthesia hadn't worn off, so she felt no pain, just a fatigue from blood loss.

"I've arranged for a nurse to help you. She should be here soon. Just let her know if you need anything."

With that, Zachary left, tossing the deformed cigarette into the trash.

Downstairs.

Rebecca got into Anthony's car. "Take me home."

She had planned to take a cab, but Anthony insisted on driving her. She had come to realize that arguing with him was futile; she would only lose. Given her lack of advantage in both strength and intellect, she decided it was better to comply and save her energy.

Anthony started the car. "Want to grab a bite to eat?"

"No, I'm too angry to eat."

Anthony sighed, rubbing his temples. "Zachary made you mad, but you're taking it out on me. Isn't that a bit unfair?"

"Birds of a feather flock together."

Friends share similar values. Zachary was a jerk, and Anthony was likely one too.

"But I've never slept with him."

Rebecca glared at him. "You're defending him, which means you're just like him."

"When did I defend him?"

"You were joking around, changing the subject. That's a form of defense."

Anthony, a seasoned professional, was baffled by Rebecca's logic. "I just think it's better for them to handle their own issues. We're outsiders, no matter how close we are, it's not our place to interfere in their relationship."

"So I didn't punch him in the face," Rebecca said proudly. "He's so infuriating, even a dog would want to bite him."

Anthony stayed silent.

Even without speaking, he couldn't escape her anger. "Not interfering doesn't prove you're different from Zachary. Stay away from me. We're done."

Even if they parted ways, she would walk her own path.

"I can't stand Zachary, and if you're like him, I won't stand you either. Stay away, or I'll pull your hair out."
